Editorial
The longed for rain has at last arrived, but
looking at the events calendar for June, and
July, hopefully the rain will hold off as many
of the events are outside. But for the time
being no more watering!
Many of the events listed are raising money
for various charities. The Shingay Ladies
Group hold a ‘Summer Evening’ every year,
raising money for different charities. This
year it is for our own Mordens Community
First Response Group.
As you will notice on page 10, the First
Response Group are calling for more
members to join them. Included in the article
are acknowledgements from people they have
helped at those times when things go horribly
wrong and you don’t know what to do. It is
very comforting to have a First Response
Group so near to hand.
The Sports Awareness Day on June 11th looks
interesting with six different sports being
represented, Football, Tennis, Carpet Bowls,
Bowls, Boot Camp, and Archery.
Finally, Steeple Morden School Fete on 1st
July, a time to say a heartfelt thank you and a
sad goodbye to the headmaster Mr Richard
Lloyd.

Waste Collection : Green Bins
Some residents have found their green bins are not
being collected. This is because they have been found to
be contaminated with plastic and even just one
contaminated bin means the whole lorry load is
contaminated and ends up in landfill. That is an awful
waste of tax-payers’ money especially as the cost for
using landfill sites is increasing because the land
available for landfill is decreasing.
In future, please do not use the bags you can buy from
Tesco and Sainsburys for your kitchen waste such as
potato peelings and left-overs. Even though the bags are
marked “Recyclable and Compostable” they take a very
long time to decompose and therefore foul up the
composting system.
South Cambs. District Council can supply acceptable
paper bags at a cost of £4.50 per 50 bags. For the
Mordens Ward, I am willing to order these for you and
deliver them to your door if you let me know you would
like some.

Parish Footpath Fund
A number of flyers have been distributed around the village and a number of posters put up about the Parish Footpath fund. As there was not much room on the flyers for information this is a more detailed explanation. Footpath 7 (that many of us walk) runs across from Hay Street to Brook End, it follows the hedge all the way around the edge of the fields. I have lived in the village for over 30 years and have never known any other route to be walked. Now it appears that ‘someone’ using the official definitive footpath map has found that the footpath should, technically, run in a straight line from Hay Street to Brook End. This would take it across an arable field, and where this occurs, the farmer should spray the crop off. As no one walked it, as everyone prefers the more pleasant route along the hedge line, this has not been done. Hence a complaint was made to the County Council. After many meetings and discussions we finally managed to get the County to agree to the larger part of the expense (we are talking thousands) being met by them. They did after all put the footpath sign up in the wrong place on Brook End! What they were not prepared to do was cover the cost of the notice of change of route from the official way, to the one we all use. This is a legal requirement to put a notice in the local press when a footpath is altered. So, we need to raise £500 to cover this and then the path around the edge of the field and along the hedge line will be official. If you can contribute, please do, either to myself or in the collection boxes in the Post Office or Sarah’s Farm Shop, and if you have further questions contact me on 01763 853130, or by e-mail. [email protected]
Thank you. Sue Norton

Steeple Morden Parish Council AGM Annual Report 2016/17
This year started out quite difficult with only six people standing at last year’s election. However, over
the year we have co-opted people to help in specific areas, and I wish to thank all my colleagues for
their hard work throughout the year.
In this report I want to highlight two activities which, I believe, raise the issues we are likely to face as
funding for the District and County councils gets ever tighter.
Angela Drew took on the task of looking after the Recreation Ground. She was not helped by the fact
that nobody knew just how much work John Jarman used to put into that job. Angela tackled the
problem by recruiting a small team of volunteers to help her. This has worked extremely well, and
they empty the litter and dog bins, check the playground and generally keep the Rec and cowslip
meadow running for the benefit of everyone.
Ginny Belson got fed up of picking up litter on the way to and from the school with her boys, so she
has organised a series of litter picks to try to tidy up the Parish. The first two have been a great success
with 15-20 volunteers turning out for an hour or so and collecting what seems like a mountain of
rubbish. This has then been taken away by the District Council. What a pity then, that on both
occasions, someone who is clearly not reading notices and newsletters has reported them for fly-
tipping.
There is one key element to both of Angela and Ginny’s activities – volunteers. As I alluded to earlier,
funding for the District and County councils is getting increasingly difficult. This means that more and
more tasks will be passed down to Parish and Town levels where often there are no resources to deal
with them. We are going to have to do some of these things ourselves. It will be no good thinking
“why aren’t ‘they’ doing so and so?” We all need to be thinking “there’s something which needs doing
here what can I do to help?”
If you see something which needs doing let the PC know and suggest how it could be done with like
minded volunteers. I’m sure one area that is going to become increasingly difficult is care, particularly
for the elderly. We already have some activities in this area like the lunch club, the over 60’s, and the
Heron Scheme. In some towns and cities there is an organisation called Good Gym whose members
call in on people in need of help whilst out doing their runs. We all need to think creatively about how
we can solve some of these issues by working together.

The “Mordens Community First Response Group”
We are looking for new members If you have a few hours spare a week, work from home from time to time, are home-based
or just fancy doing something new that is massively rewarding, then please get in touch.
The Mordens CFR Group is a small group of local volunteers who are trained by the ambulance service to attend 999 ambulance related calls within an approximate 5 mile radius of the Mordens. Since going live in July last year, we have attended over 120 calls, and in the vast majority of cases, have been the first to arrive on scene. Our group’s aims are; to reach the patient in the first vital minutes before the ambulance crew or paramedic arrive on scene, to assess and stabilise the patient and in many cases, give reassurance. Calls we could be asked to attend include:
• breathing difficulties / chest pains • heart attack and stroke • cardiac arrest • diabetic emergency • seizures • asthma related emergencies
Feedback from many patients is that we are a friendly local face which helps to give reassurance in a potentially stressful time.
Anyone can become a Community First Responder but you must: have your own car, be
physically fit, aged 18-70, agree to a criminal record bureau check and have a sympathetic,
caring nature. If you are interested in finding out more, please contact myself, Nick Badger on (01763) 852191, 07860 537114 or mail [email protected] or the group’s co-ordinator Wayne Cox on (01763) 853206, 07795 823376 or by mail [email protected] Many thanks “Thanks for being there when we needed you” “I just wanted to say thank you so much for when you came to my aid. Your swift arrival at my house was amazing – I couldn’t believe how quick there was a knock at the door! As soon as you started to help me you immediately made me relax and able to cope with the situation. You also helped my mum to stay calm too with your reassuring and friendly manner……I just wanted to say what a great service your team provides and thank you again for all you did” “….what you did was just amazing as you calmed everyone down and that helped so so much. Eternally grateful you arrived as quick as you did as you really never know.”

Well we had another very successful litter pick event on
Saturday 13th May 2017 with 20 people turning up
including 7 children which is really fantastic. This time
we tackled the "heart" of the village along Cheney Street
and all the surrounding roads - Zone 3. Although this
part of the village does not have a huge litter problem our
volunteers still managed to collect 11 bags of rubbish
during the 60 minute makeover!
Thanks to Prothero's Garage for allowing us to leave the
rubbish on their forecourt for collection by SCDC.
Thanks also to the speed watch team for supporting us
again and making our event safer by slowing the cars
entering the area.
The next litter pick event is on Saturday 10th June
- we will be meeting at the junction of Station Road and
Ashwell Road at 2pm - all welcome.

Allotments For Rent
Would you like the satisfaction of growing your own veg, saving a few pounds on your shopping bill and
possibly making new friends along the way?
Our site on the edge of the village has now been established for four years. We are a small, friendly,
lively, enthusiastic (and mixed ability!) group of members, with around 20 plots on site. Due to changes
of circumstance, one or two have recently become available so we would love you to join our thriving
community of Allotmenteers!
We have ‘full size’ and ‘half size’ plots – perhaps you would like to share with a friend or neighbour, or
give your children the chance to learn more about where their food comes from by growing their own?
It is a self-contained, locked site with a water supply and communal composting, and you can put a shed
on your plot if needed.
So if you want to be eating fresh Asparagus in April and your own Leeks in December please get in
touch!

Libby’s World Challenge and Hammer Throw Challenge 2017/18 My name is Libby Taylor, I live in Steeple Morden and am currently in year 10 at Bassingbourn Village College. In July 2018 I will be embarking on the biggest adventure of my life when I travel to Northern Tanzania as part of our ‘World Challenge’. We will be trekking through North Pares, planting trees on Kilimanjaro and helping with Community projects. Part of the challenge is to raise £2850 necessary to make the journey. For the past 5 years I have been a member at Stevenage and North Herts Athletics Club and in September 2015 I joined the Hammer Throws Squad. Last summer was my first competitive season in this event where I qualified for the English Schools Championships and ended the season as the second highest ranked Hammer Thrower in U15 Girls in the East of England. I have decided it would be fun to try to combine my love of Hammer throwing with raising money towards my trip. As the tallest mountain in North Tanzania, Kilimanjaro stands at 5895m, my goal is to see how far up Kilimanjaro I can climb with my competition throws this season by adding up the total distance thrown. My goal is to reach 3000m which would take me over half way up Kilimanjaro! To help me achieve my goals, I am looking for sponsorship per 1000m achieved. Any amount, however small will help me on my way to Tanzania and hopefully up the UK Hammer Throwing rankings too If you would like to find out more about my challenge, visit my Facebook page: Libby’s World Challenge. If you would like to sponsor me please e-mail me: [email protected] Please provide your name and contact number and the amount per 1000m you would like to sponsor me for. Thank you in advance to everyone who is able to support me and help me on my way. Libby
