From the Team Vicar

Did you read the article by the Bishop of Ramsbury in the April edition of the Sarum Link? It was about a Diocesan initiative, to be launched in September, called Learning for Discipleship. The objective is to provide learning opportunities for all. Bishop Stephen says “The key principle is that we are truly reliant not upon learned individuals who run communities, but upon learning communities which discern various ministries.”

Patterns of learning will be flexible, and as far as possible will begin with lay learning. Prior experience of life and ministry will enhance all that is undertaken. Again to quote Bishop Stephen, “Our prior experience of God and the Church is a truly important part of our continuing formation in Christ. Our learning is for a purpose greater than our personal fulfilment. It is for the building up of the whole community of faith.” To be able to work in ways that are truly collaborative will strengthen communities, and equip individuals to answer basic questions of faith.

At a recent meeting to launch an Alpha course, the introductory talk entitled ‘Christianity – Boring? True? Irrelevant?’ opened wide-ranging discussion about exactly such issues as challenge us in ordinary conversation with family, friends or neighbours. How confident are you in speaking about your faith? Do you find yourselves ‘lost for words’? What could you do about it?

What topics would be of greatest interest or of greatest use? What should be done within our parishes? What might be more usefully learned as part of the Diocesan Learning for Discipleship programme? Have you ever considered what your own ‘gifting’ is, and how it might be used for the promotion of God’s Kingdom?

Whatever your thoughts, hopefully we shall all be ‘lifelong learners’, deepening our relationship with God and our Christian witness within our communities.

Sudan Garden party

The Sudan Garden party at the South Canonry, 71 The Close, will be held on Midsummer's Day, Sunday 24th June from 2.00-5.00 pm. This event takes place each year by kind permission of the Bishop and Mrs Sarah Stancliffe and is one of the main fund raising events for the Sudan Medical link, raising up to £5,000 each year. Entry is just £1.00 and 50p for children. There will be stalls selling plants, books, strawberries and cream, and many other things, plus the Amesbury Town band. Please put the date in your diary and come and support this enjoyable and worthwhile event.

Following the King’s Highway Under the guidance of Canon Richard and

Margaret Askew, together with the Venerable Barney and Esmé Hopkinson, 41 volunteers set out last month on a pilgrimage through Jordan and Syria. Starting by the Dead Sea we progressed northward taking in, amongst the many sites we saw, Mount Nebo, where Moses viewed the Promised Land, and the traditional baptismal site of St John the Baptist and of Christ at Bethany-by-

Jordan. The important ancient cities of Petra and Jerash were visited and we viewed the antiquities of Amman and the desert fort of Qasrel Azraq used by Lawrence of Arabia in 1917. Half a day was spent at the Anglican Holy Land Institute for the Deaf at Salt, an inspiring centre for the remedial treatment and training of deaf children. We celebrated our first Eucharist in the Franciscan church at Mount Nebo, we held daily worship, sometimes in bizarre locations such as an ancient tomb chamber in Petra but more conventionally at Bethany and the chapel at the Salt Institute.

Crossing into Syria we held prayers in the Russian Orthodox church at Kavkab Hill, the site of St Paul’s conversion on the road to Damascus. Our second Eucharist was celebrated in Damascus itself in the church of Ananias at the bottom of the street called Straight where St Paul first lodged. We next visited Maalovla, where Aramaic is still spoken, and worshipped in the Greek catholic church. The next day we drove for 3 hours across the desert to Palmyra with its splendid Hellenistic ruins and, before exploring the site, held prayers in the huge Temple of Bal (Baal). From Palmyra we stepped forward in time to take in the massive crusader castle of the Hospitallers at Crac des Chevaliers before leaving on the long run up to Aleppo, our final stopping place. Both Aleppo, with its souqs and citadel crowned by Saladin’s fortress, and Damascus with its souqs, where damask weaving is still carried out near to the Great Mosque, afford insights into Islamic history, culture and Islam itself.

Our last visits were to the abandoned early Christian town of Serjillah near Antioch. 6th century AD life here was depicted, in modern style, by members of our pilgrimage with much good humour showing that nothing had really changed over the centuries. We finished with a final Eucharist the next day in the colossal basilica of St Simeon Stylites, a 5th century hermit preacher who attracted a large pilgrim following during and after his lifetime.

We were made welcome by both the Jordanians and Syrians we met in their respective countries and much enjoyed their company. Our pilgrimage was successful thanks to our tour leaders’ skilful organisation, helpfulness and, most importantly, spiritual guidance.

Jesus Christ in Islam

Jesus is held in high regard by the Muslim tradition. He is usually designated as Jesus the son of Mary (Is bin Maryam), and is seen as a great prophet second in importance only to Muhammad himself. According to the Quran, where he is mentioned 25 times, Jesus was born of a virgin, performed miracles, raised the dead, and restored monotheism by revealing the Gospel. However, contrary to Christian orthodoxy, Muslims believe that Jesus did not die upon the cross, was not divine, was not the Son of God, and was not part of the Trinity, which is seen as a contradiction of the unity of God. Therefore, although Muslims have a more positive view of Jesus than Christians have traditionally exercised towards Muhammad, they view him through the eyes of the Quran, not through the perspective of Christian theology. There is a tradition among Muslims that Jesus will come back before the final judgement, destroy the anti-Christ, and usher in the end of the age in a kind of second coming. This implies not that Jesus was resurrected from the dead, but that he did not really die at all and he will return at the end of time. (Information given to the pilgrims by Richard Askew)

Annual Parochial Church Meeting

The APCM was held at Longbridge Deverill Village Hall on Sunday 15th April after Evening Prayer. Thirty three parishioners attended to vote in the PCC members and Churchwardens. The current PCC members were all re-elected. Mary Royall, Jo Steptoe and Guy Ratcliffe were elected as new members. The incumbent Churchwardens were also re-elected unanimously: Elisabeth Atkinson and Nigel Poole at Longbridge Deverill, Mary Stewart Cox at Brixton Deverill and Mike Tulloch at Kingston Deverill. The Sidesmen for the three churches were also re-elected. Robert and Jo Steptoe, Guy and Maggi Ratcliffe agreed to assist the Churchwardens as necessary. The statement of accounts, presented by David Stratton, was accepted.

The Rev Norma Payne reported on the main events of the past year. She thanked the parishioners for their support, the Clergy, the Readers, the Churchwardens, all those who prepared for the Sunday services, led the prayers, arranged the flowers and tended the churchyards. She referred to the Fair Trade status of the parish, the support for the Trussel Trust at Harvest Festival, the licensing of the four new Lay Pastoral Assistants and the confirmation of team candidates. She commended Crockerton School on its 'outstanding' OFSTED report and the Parish News for its success in communication. She spoke of her hopes to build on her contact with families. Finally, she said she was encouraged by the numbers attending the various church services.

Mike Tulloch presented the Electoral Roll. Short reports were made by Nigel Poole on the Finance Committee, Helen Hemingway on the Heytesbury Deanery Review and by Barbara Beilby on the Thursday Pre-school Children's Group.

The Lady of Burma

It is a one-woman play, focusing on the story of Aung San Suu Kyi - whose party won an overwhelming election victory in Burma but she has spent a total of twelve of the past nineteen years under house arrest. This is an evocation of one of the world’s most important political figures and Nobel laureate, a woman who has refused to endorse violence as a means of change and who has never given up hope that democracy can be restored to one of the most oppressed peoples in the world.

The Group meeting at Sutton Veny starts at 7.30pm on Thursday 10th May, and features ‘The lady with the beautiful voice’. The competition is an item with a musical connection and a written explanation of why it’s special to you.

Our local meeting on Monday 14th May will start at 7.30 pm in Longbridge Village Hall, Alfred Oates will be speaking about the Queen’s ceremonial horses and carriages. Barn Dance – Rye Hill Farm Barn on Saturday 19th May

The Rotary Club of Warminster is organising a Barn Dance on Saturday 19th May in aid of Rotary Charities. This fun event will be held at Rye Hill Farm Barn by kind permission of Julian and Sarah Algar. The evening will be one that can be enjoyed by everybody and there will be an excellent Band, ‘Spill the Whisky’ and a caller. entertaining John Betjeman evening last year Eddie Mirzoeff has kindly agreed to make available to us his highly acclaimed film ‘A Passion For Churches’ This is a celebration by Betjeman of "the dear old C of E" which Betjeman considers to be the very essence of Englishness. In it Betjeman tells us it was in Norfolk, rowing with his father on the River Bure, that the 8-year-old John Betjeman first noticed a church tower outlined against the sky. In the film Sir John returns to the Diocese of Norwich (which includes most of Norfolk and a little of Suffolk) where he delights in the art and architecture of its spectacular churches, and looks with humour and affection at the daily life of the Anglican church in town and country. Eddie Mirzoeff will be available to give us some more insights into working with Sir John. A snack of bread and cheese will be provided but you should bring your own wine and glasses. We are not selling tickets for the evening but will be asking for contributions which will go towards the Village Hall extension fund.

Crockerton Church of England Primary School - Outstanding!

Children, staff, parents and Governors are celebrating their ‘outstanding’ judgement from OFSTED. The school was awarded the top ‘Grade 1’ judgement across all categories inspected – Achievement and Standards, Personal Development and Well-Being, Quality of Provision, Leadership and Management and Overall Effectiveness, placing them in the top 8% of schools, nationwide and joining only two others currently in Wiltshire labelled as ‘Outstanding Providers’.

In his letter to the pupils, Inspector David Curtis wrote, “I am delighted to tell you that your school is outstanding and I have a sneaking feeling that you and your parents know that already. It is hard to find things that your school could do better.”

The Inspector praised Governors, parents and staff for their support of Headteacher Val Culff in her leadership. Her vision for every child to achieve his or her potential, be it academic, sporting or artistic, and the management put in place to enable this, was put by OFSTED at the heart of the school’s success. Staff received praise for their outstanding curriculum planning, teaching, assessment, pastoral care.

Governors and parents joined staff and children for a celebration party lunch on Friday, followed by a walk down the lanes to Shearwater where everyone enjoyed a play in the forest. They were also joined by Catherine Stokes, Senior School Improvement Adviser from Wiltshire County Council.

Comment from Headteacher Everyone is very proud. We feel a little bemused by all the attention it

must be a bit like winning ‘Pop Idol’! Nothing we have done has been ‘rocket science’. I’m an old-fashioned Headteacher and I would say that the most difficult thing has been, over the past few years, to remain true to what I believe a good school should look like. It’s based on very simple principles and about responding to children’s needs rather than following all the latest initiatives and dictates from ‘above’. These need rigorously evaluating as to whether they are actually right for your particular school. Sometimes, as a Head that has made me feel very vulnerable and ‘out of step’, but I am lucky enough to have wonderful staff, governors and parents who trusted me. Everyone also works incredibly hard and very

well as a team. This is a real ‘thumbs up’ from OFSTED for schools who just want to keep it simple whilst being creative and individual. Schools are unique and that’s exactly how it should be. One size does not fit all.

Wylye Valley Tennis ClubThe club evolved some six years ago by a few like minded players

within the parish, then entering a mixed doubles team into the local Chippenham & District League. We started in the bottom division (6) and rose through the years to Div. 2. We have just started our 2007 challenge to remain in Div. 2, plus for the first time entering a second team which have started in the bottom Div. 6. We expect to struggle somewhat to maintain regular players for both teams each week, so if there are any tennis players who would like to join this local tennis group please contact me.Colin Singer 213696

Keeping Our Valley Green : Part 2 Friday 23rd FebruaryAs a follow-up to the evening last October, Lisa Mather, of Wiltshire

Wildlife Trust, gave a most informative and enjoyable presentation to an interested and environmentally aware audience. Her talk focused firstly on Wildlife and Countryside Preservation and secondly on Carbon Emissions Reduction. Her purpose was to show the effects of climate change on both wildlife and human well-being, both locally and internationally. She also outlined a number of practical suggestions for cutting down our fossil fuel energy consumption. Considerable interest was generated among those present and lively discussion followed Lisa also drew attention to the Wiltshire Energy Efficiency Advice Centre, Tel: 0800 512 012, which works closely with the Wildlife Trust and is able to provide technical advice to individual householders trying to reduce their personal consumption of energy (and, where possible, save money at the same time!).

The intention is to take the sustainable living initiative forward with a further Evening in the autumn, exact date and format to be announced later. It may also be possible to set up a very informal local panel of residents who can discuss energy reduction issues and help to refer people to appropriate expert sources. If this idea comes together, details will be disseminated in due course.
