Stewardship Reflections

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I

send? Who will go for us?’ ‘Here I am,’ I said, ‘send me!’”

(Isaiah 6:8)

Every day, in little ways and in big ways, God asks, “Whom shall I send?” Whether it is someone to take on a new ministry, to

give a friendly smile to a stranger or say a word of encouragement to a friend, God constantly provides

opportunities to help someone in need. The next time you hear God calling, have the courage to walk through the door and say

“Here I am, Lord.”

5th Week in Ordinary Time

Last week I wrote about the matter of the sacraments! This is as essential, as is the wording in a

contract, and even though the two are different, I am trying to highlight that the matter of the

sacraments is not incidental, or insignificant. This week I am going to write on the “validity and

liceity” of the sacraments.

In order for there to a valid sacrament, that is, for a sacrament to actually come into effect or

reality, there must be a duly authorized person to either perform, or confer the sacrament. Examples of

this are; a) for baptism the ordinary minister of the sacrament of baptism is an ordained priest who is in

communion with the Church and his bishop. However, when there is danger of death anyone, even a

non-believer, can baptize. What is essential is that the person has three things: 1) the intention to do

what the Church does; 2) the right matter – in the case of baptism, water – and 3) uses the right words.

For Mass, or the Eucharist, to be valid the man must be properly ordained by a bishop who is in the

apostolic succession, meaning he is authorized by the Vicar of Jesus Christ. The priest must always

have the intention of the Church, and of course use the correct words, not his words as he cannot

deviate at all, and has the right matter. For the Latin Rite, unleavened bread and proper wine.

There are two aspects that need to be met for a proper sacrament: 1) it must be validity brought

about; 2) the issue of liceity is necessary as well. This may seem overly technical, but think about it:

the Church must authorize all of its ministers for the proper ministering of the faithful and the bringing

about of the sacraments, otherwise you would have priests going around baptizing anyone who would

pay them, just to site one possibility, and then the baptisms would not be properly recorded for present

and future reference.

This week we celebrate Catholic Schools Week in the Archdiocese. There will be various events

going on in the school throughout the week, one of which is the annual Grade 7 students battling it out

with the teachers in a basketball game. I do play on the teachers’ team, and to date we are undefeated.

The Grade 7s have put up a good challenge in the past, but not sufficient to beat us … yet! We are

blessed to have our Catholic Schools, whether you send your child to a Catholic School or not, what is

really important is the teaching and passing on of the Catholic Faith. We have this incredible blessing

that we must never take for granted.

St. Valentine’s Day is this Thursday, and is the day to commemorate a Saint who gave his life

for love of Jesus Christ, and to protect the right of a man and woman to marry, contrary to the

emperor’s edict. This is a day to give thanks to St. Valentine for his witness to Christ and the greatness

of marriage. He teaches us, even today, that true love is not to take, but to give and to sacrifice.

Hamilton 神父

How to Have a Happy Marriage: Explained in 4 Infographics

What is the secret to a happy marriage? The secret of how to have a happy marriage is realizing that happiness is not the purpose of marriage. If your goal in marriage is your own personal happiness, you’re going about it all wrong.

The first thing to do is to spend some time studying the definition of marriage according to the Word of God. The verse in the image below will help you to gain a Biblical perspective on marriage. Take the time to become a student of marriage. You probably spent months training for your job or years studying in college for your profession, but how much time have you dedicated to learning about the vocation of marriage that you’ve been called to for the rest of your life?

What is Marriage?

What Does the Bible Say About How to Have a Happy Marriage?

Page 8: PARISH MINISTRIES/GROUPS · 8:00 AM for Dori & Vittorio Girotti, RIP Wednesday, February 13 8:00 AM for Hamilcar Manikan, RIP 9:00 AM SCHOOL MASS Thursday, Ferbuary 14 St. Cyril,

What Does the Catechism Say About How to Have a Happy Marriage? The love of the spouses requires, of its very nature, the unity and indissolubility of the spouses’ community of persons, which embraces their entire life: “so they are no longer two, but one flesh.”153 They “are called to grow continually in their communion through day-to-day fidelity to their marriage promise of total mutual self-giving.”154 This human communion is confirmed, purified, and completed by communion in Jesus Christ, given through the sacrament of Matri-mony. It is deepened by lives of the common faith and by the Eucharist received together. – CCC 1644 .

The marriage covenant, by which a man and a woman form with each other an intimate communion of life and love, has been founded and endowed with its own special laws by the Creator. By its very nature it is ordered to the good of the couple, as well as to the generation and education of children. Christ the Lord raised marriage between the bap-tized to the dignity of a sacrament (cf. CIC, can. 1055 § 1; cf. GS 48 § 1). – CCC 1660 .

The Saints’ Advice for a Happy Marriage. “The secret of happiness is to live moment by moment and to thank God for what He is sending us every day in His goodness.” – St. Gianna .

“The purpose of marriage is to help married people sanctify themselves and others. For this reason, they receive a spe-cial grace in the sacrament which Jesus Christ instituted. Those who are called to the married state will, with the grace of God, find within their state everything they need to be holy, to identify themselves each day more with Jesus Christ, and to lead those with whom they live to God.”– St.Josemaria Escriva .

“[On what young husbands should say to their wives:] I have taken you in my arms, and I love you, and I prefer you to my life itself. For the present life is nothing, and my most ardent dream is to spend it with you in such a way that we may be assured of not being separated in the life reserved for us… I place your love above all things, and nothing would be more bitter or painful to me than to be of a different mind than you.” ― John Chrysostom
