This, of course, means it is time for the Season of Lent. Were given forty days to prepare for Easter. How will you use your gift this year? The most popular question is, What are you giving up for Lent?The next most popular question is, What are you taking on?Regardless of how you might answer those questions, the real heart of the matter is How you will use the gift of your forty Lenten days to prepare for Easter?Last week I attended the annual conference of the Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes in Louisville, Kentucky. This gathering features some of the most innovative and dynamic leaders in our Church. I find both inspiration and challenge at this conference every year. At breakfast on Saturday I sat next to a vestry member from a parish in Indiana. It was his first time attending the conference. He told me a story about his congregation that led him to come to Louisville in search of good, faithful ideas to take back home. There was a quiet man who sat alone in the pew at our early service, the vestry member said. He preferred flannel shirts to coat-and-tie. He was friendly, but not outgoing. He often came in to worship at the last minute, and left quietly after the dismissal. This was his faithful pattern for years.I felt like I knew where this story was headed. I was right. The vestry member continued, He died last year and we celebrated his Requiem Eucharist, like we do for everyone who belongs to our parish. Several months later we learned that—despite all appearances—he had a multi-million dollar trust fund which he left to our congregation. His gift has utterly transformed how we think about, and perform ministry. We feel a deep responsibility to make the most of this gift.On Sunday I looked out over our 8:30 and 10:30 congregations to see if anyone here at St. Pe- ters was wearing a flannel shirt! (That is a joke.) The serious point is this. Every one of us is called to look around at one another—and also within ourselves—and see gifts more precious than gold. We are all called to a deep responsibility to make the most of these gifts. The call of Jesus Christ is for us to use and share our gifts for the glory of God and for the bless- ing of other people. We dont know how many days we have on this earth, but we do know that we have gifts to use and share while we are here. We also have gifts we can leave behind as a legacy of thankfulness and generosity. All these gifts are transformative when we share them. Whether you plan to give something up or take something on this Lent, please remember the more significant question: What will you do with the gift of preparing for Easter—not just the Easter we celebrate after the forty days of this Lent is over, but the Easter we will all celebrate some day through our risen life in Christ? Dear People of St. Peter’s,

The daffodils have risen up in full bloom to announce hopeful tidings, “Spring is coming!” This, of

course, means it is time for the Season of Lent. We’re given forty days to prepare for Easter.

How will you use your gift this year?

The most popular question is, “What are you giving up for Lent?” The next most popular question

is, “What are you taking on?” Regardless of how you might answer those questions, the real

heart of the matter is “How you will use the gift of your forty Lenten days to prepare for Easter?”

Last week I attended the annual conference of the Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes in

Louisville, Kentucky. This gathering features some of the most innovative and dynamic leaders in

our Church. I find both inspiration and challenge at this conference every year.

At breakfast on Saturday I sat next to a vestry member from a parish in Indiana. It was his first

time attending the conference. He told me a story about his congregation that led him to come to

Louisville in search of good, faithful ideas to take back home.

“There was a quiet man who sat alone in the pew at our early service,” the vestry member said.

“He preferred flannel shirts to coat-and-tie. He was friendly, but not outgoing. He often came in to

Unlikely Disciples

Each Wednesday in Lent

(except Ash Wednesday & Holy Week)

Plan to join us on each of the Wednesdays in Lent for worship,

delicious food, fellowship, and a closer look at what it means to

be a disciple of Jesus Christ.

6:00 p.m. We begin in the Church with worship (a brief Ho-

ly Eucharist most weeks, and a Choral Evensong on March

18th).

6:35 p.m. Then join us in Stockstill Hall for a Lenten sup-

per, hosted each week by various groups of volunteers within

our parish.

7:10 p.m. After time for eating and fellowship, Fr. Furman

will present a brief program about what it means to be a disci-

ple of Jesus (we will conclude around 7:30 p.m.)

He will teach from the book, Being Disciples: Essentials of the

Christian Life by the former Archbishop of Canterbury, the

Most Rev. Rowan Williams. (You do not need to purchase or

read the book.) Fr. Furman will look at discipleship through the

examples of some of the prominent (and unlikely) characters

featured in our Sunday Gospel readings during Lent—

Nicodemus, the Samaritan woman, the blind man, Lazarus,

and Joseph of Arimathea.

Girl Scouts’ Birthday-March 12 March 12th commemorates the day in 1912 when Juliette Gor-

don Low officially registered the organization's first 18 girl

members in Savannah, Georgia. This March 8th

we will cele-

brate Girl Scout Sunday here at St. Peters, giving our girls the

opportunity to attend a place of worship and be recognized as

a Girl Scout.

Girl Scout Troops 3377 and 605 are so grateful for the space,

love, and support this congregation has provided us. As a way

to express our gratitude Troop 605 is hosting coffee hour after

the 10:30 service. Both troops will have cookies for sale after

the 8:30 and 10:30 services.

New Faces at St. Peter’s

Martha Kinard Johnson

Martha, who was born in Greenville, is Hayne Cope’s mother. What an introduction! She was initially raised a Methodist, but became an Episcopalian as a youth. Martha says her family has always lived within the church. It was heartwarming to hear Martha say that St. Peter’s was socially aware of both the fragile parishioners was well as the strong ones. Martha has three children. Everyone knows Hayne and Marie and their 3 children. She also has Catherine in Asheville with children ages six and two and Carol in Lexing-ton, SC who has an eight year old and a one month old. Be-cause Martha is retired as Principal of Heritage Elementary School (an International Baccalaureate school outside of Traveler’s Rest), she has plenty of time to help with babysit-ting for her 7 grandchildren. I think she told me that she would be helping in both Asheville and Lexington this week! During her teaching career, she has helped raise thousands of chil-dren from the 8th grade down. In addition to babysitting, Martha loves to travel, read and work in her garden. She has woods behind her house with a creek and wildflowers, and that sounds like heaven to me! Please welcome this delightful lady to St. Peter’s. She usually attends the 10:30 a.m. service after Hayne’s Sunday School Class.

Through Wade and Delores’ many activities at St. Peter’s you may know them. But, come, meet or get to know other friendly adults from St. Peter’s. Please bring an appetizer or a bottle of wine to share. For newcomers to Fellowship, just bring yourselves and we will treat you. Soft drinks are always available. We hope to see you there!

Should I stand or should I kneel?

Several parishioners have asked recently about whether to stand or kneel during the Eucharistic prayer on Sunday morn-ings. The answer turns out to be “Yes!” It is the widespread practice in the Episcopal Church for us all to stand at the beginning of the Eucharistic Prayer. After we say/sing the Sanctus (the ‘Holy, Holy, Holy’ portion of the prayer) it is acceptable either to stand or kneel. There is a slight preference in Rite 1 for kneeling and a slight preference in Rite 2 for standing (as indicated in the italic instructions from the BCP). I fully expect us to have a blended response, as is the case in many congregations.

Now, during the Easter Season there is a very strong prefer-ence for standing as a sign we have been “raised up” with Christ. Likewise, during the penitential season of Lent, there is a strong preference for kneeling. During the ‘green seasons’ after Epiphany and Pentecost, it is up to you! *As always, for those with a physical hardship, any prayer posture—standing, sitting, or kneeling—is acceptable anytime.

After we have received Communion, the general preference is to stand for the Postcommunion Thanksgiving prayer we all say together. The idea is that we have just been fed and strengthened in the Eucharist to stand and immediately there-after go in peace to love and serve. As noted above, if it is a hardship or if it is otherwise personally important for you to kneel during that prayer, that is fine too.

Hearts on Fire

We are quite naturally impatient in everything to reach the end without delay. We should like to skip the intermediate stages. We are impatient of being on the way to something unknown, something new.

Yet it is the law of all progress, that it is made by passing through some stages of instability, and that may take a very long time. And so I think it is with you.

Your ideas mature gradually. Let them grow. Let them shape themselves without undue haste. Do not try to force them on as though you could be today what time — that is to say, grace — and circumstances acting on your own good will will make you tomorrow.

Only God could say what this new Spirit gradually forming in you will be. Give our Lord the benefit of believing that his hand is leading you, and accept the anxiety of feeling yourself in suspense and incomplete.

Above all, trust in the slow work of God,

our loving vine-dresser.

Lenten devotionals are now available. There is a selection for

adults, children and families. You can find them on the table

in the upper narthex or on the table in front of the office.

Interfaith Hospitality Network

IFHN is a ministry to support families who are experiencing homelessness. Along with St. Gile's church, we provide meals and fellowship with the families in the program. Lenten Crosses – An Intergenerational

Family Event

participate in our Lenten Cross

making on Sunday, March 1 at 9:30

in Stockstill Hall. This year we will

be making Lenten Crosses. It is de-

signed to be an interactive family devotional activity. Similar

to our Advent wreaths, a new candle will be lit each week

with a devotional reading. There will also be items to add to

your display each week to remind us of the importance of the

Lenten season. So, whether you are a

Baby Supplies Drive

The Discovery Disciples class (1st-3rd grade) will be exe-cuting the Baby Supplies Drive during Lent again this year. And we need your help! Please bring baby food, formula, diapers, wipes and drop off in the wagon in front of the Discovery Disciples room.

As the song says... He has called us too... he has called us too... we are his disciples, we his work must do!

Your donations help us all as we do his work to take care of the needy babies!

Where did they come from and what could have encouraged them, after the crucifixion, to venture out into the larger world to spread the good news of the covenant reimagined? Something deeply moving hap-pened at Pentecost to transform these men from disciples into apostles. Join Jason and Hayne while they delve into the story of the 12. Together, you'll discover what scripture teaches us about each and what legend tells us about their lives - and deaths - after Pentecost and the legacy they left behind.
