Cindy Fields - Community Service - 456-4918 -

At the end of each year, I contemplate the past year & establish goals. The Community Service portion of the work had previously been 60% of my position & 30% was related to Soup Kitchen, leaving 10% to offset the shared balance of time. The CS aspect included Ecumenical Outreach into the larger faith based community & to the general public, and safety services focused on homelessness, drug addiction, mental health & hunger in our Fairbanks & surrounding area. I am still interested & motivated by what I believe God is asking me to participate in & is asking me not to give up. I believe that we need to evangelize at every opportunity we get, in whatever forum we find ourselves. Does God ask that I continue reaching out with LOVING Action & the voice of hopeful encouragement? Is the language & symbol of the Church, the Kingdom of Jesus on earth? I only desire to continue representing & ministering to those who have yet to experience the depth of the Love & to help light the way to walk with Jesus.

I am thankful for the assistance of volunteers & donors who support the CS/SK all year long. We have had substantial success with fundraising activities in the past. We plan to continue the ‘Soup’s On’ Golf Tournament, our 7th Annual, & bring an additional 13K to the budget. We also receive an annual donation of 11-12K from a local foundation for the support of the SK. I would very much appreciate the help from experienced financial minded team members to help find additional sources of funds for use by CS/SK or other aspects of our church ministries. Remembering that ideas pass through an approval phase, please contact Fr. Tom or Cindy to schedule a visit.

The experience of working with all our awesome volunteers has been such a positive adventure. The people who come to volunteer are basicly strangers at first. During the time together, a bond of friendship is formed, as we share our loving spirit with each other & our guests. It seems as if we are one big happy family. This is very serious work & sometimes we must suffer a painful & a saddening reality. Grace fortifies us as we witness healing by means of the sincerity of LOVE. Blessed are we who witness the reconciliation & spiritual resurrection. We “Love them through their illness,” fervently giving the unconditional Love of Jesus. We do remind guests of behavior policy which must be observed. If not, we call CSP or FPD. We pray with these folks & help them to know to forgive themselves, as Christ does & as we do.

I will never forget the first year that I was working here. Christmas was on Sunday & -40. It was time for people to leave. No bus service & many businesses closed on Christmas. Earlier during the meal, Carlene had happy conversations with everyone. She had taken her Christmas bag of simple gifts into the bathroom “to freshen” up with her new toothbrush/paste, nice smelling hand soap, lotion, Chap Stick, hairbrush, new warm socks, gloves, scarf & hat. She came out & laughingly said “All dressed up with nowhere to go.” The next day they found her across the street - inside an old abandoned ambulance. She had frozen to death. Her mother said she was happy that her daughter had a Christmas meal & had freshened up with the gifts the EMTs found tucked beside her. Oh, Silent Night…There remains much to do with the help of Heaven & earth. Amen.

Stewardship: First Fruits

Money is the most sensitive issue for many. It is the cause of many divorces, business failures, and political disputes.

Scripture speaks much of money. 800 references to money exist in Scripture, yet no where does it say that money is mine. In fact Paul tells us: The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. (1 Tim 6:10)

Learning to give 10%, that is the tithe, is an Old Testament teaching. But as we know, that was a minimum amount. Another teaching, and more important one that Scriptures teaches, is that the first fruits of your labor belong to God.

Understanding both these teachings reveal to us that we are to give God, i.e. the Church, the first 10% of the fruits of our labor.

This is not a complicated teaching. But it is a very difficult one if you are attached to your money.

Giving the first dollar to your parish is incredibly important, as it teaches us not to be greedy, but generous.

Giving 10% of your income to charity controls our selfish desires, and in so doing, empowers us to serve the needs of others.

Calculating your 10% is easy. Your tax statement tells you how much earned income you have made. Multiplying that number by .10 gives you the goal to give.

The poverty line for the average American household is $24,300/year. Multiplied by .10 means that the family ought to give $2,430.

This may seem like a lot of money, but we must remember the other teaching of Jesus: “Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And then God is ablei to bless you abundantly.” (I Cor 9:6)

Why Be Catholic? Restored Dignity

Many believe sin is breaking a rule. Sin is not breaking rules; Sin is a sickness. It is a self-destructive behavior that destroys friendships, families, and most importantly faith.

Sin is choosing to become less than your best. It degrades our dignity. Yet, for many, sin is merely the breaking of some rules determined by some authoritarian, antiquated figure who knows nothing about life, love, or livelihood.

This, of course, is pure deception. God gave us the 10 Commandments not to give 10 rules which we are not to break, but to free us from our senseless ways. Looking at the second half of the Ten Commandments: 4. Honor your elders; 5. Don’t kill; 6. Don’t do adultery; 7. Don’t steal; 8. Don’t gossip; 9 & 10. Don’t covet goods or persons; are not advisory rules, but protections against degradation and humiliation.

Sin mutilates our soul, heart, mind, and body. It also destroys society. Human experience teaches us this. Just look at all the human depravity caused by lust, sloth, greed, gluttony, anger, envy, and pride. These debase our human dignity, and we live as animals.

Jesus restores our debased humanity first by becoming one with us. His birth reveals to us the value and dignity not only of our human nature, but the value and dignity of each individual. God became human so that the human person becomes divine.

“Christ the Redeemer fully reveals man to himself. If we may use the expression, this is the human dimension of the mystery of the Redemption. In this dimension, man finds again the greatness, dignity and value that belong to his humanity. In the mystery of the Redemption, man becomes newly expressed and, in a way, is newly created.” (Redemptor Hominis # 10)

Jesus calls each of us to follow Him, no matter the state of our sinfulness. He restores to each of us our divine dignity — not by condemning us for our sickness — but by healing us of our illness: Sin. Today, more than ever, we need to hear the call of Jesus, and we

learn from Samuel and respond:

Here I am Lord, I come to do your will!

Renounce Satan and Follow Me!

Sunday Morning is a celebration! Yet, when we look at the crowds in Church, parishioners have sad, worn, tired faces. Sunday morning is a day of rest, yet, when we look at the schedules and activities for the day, we are overwhelmed. Sunday is a day of worship. It is a day to celebrate. It is a day to rest, relax, and reminisce. It is a

day to celebrate life in God.

Most events at Church celebrate something significance in a person’s life. Baptism celebrates a person’s birth into the Church. First Communion and First Confession celebrate a child’s first personal encounter with Jesus. Confirmation celebrates a teenager’s personal commitment to their Faith. Marriage and Priesthood celebrate the covenant between God and his people. Finally, Anointing of the Sick celebrates healing when we are broken and

wounded.

Celebrating is the essence of Christian Life. But what exactly do we celebrate when we gather for these events? In essence, we are celebrating our call to holiness. In the Sacraments, we experience Jesus’s call for us to follow

Him. It is the happiness of holiness.

Yet, many people celebrate falsely and fictitiously. They celebrate sports and athletes, graduation and promotions, possessions and purchases. Celebrating these are a different sort of happiness than when we celebrate the life-giving sacraments of Jesus. Something profound takes place when we gather in Church to celebrate divine life. Yet many people today experience the Church and her celebrations as a burden, or worse

as a hoax.

“If people do not come to church, it is not their failure alone; it is ours as well. We should ask ourselves, ‘Why are they not coming to church?’” (Rediscover

Catholicism p. 58)

We are not engaging the faithful; we are not feeding them; we are not releasing the power of grace in which believers are transformed into happy - that is holy - people. “As a Church we have failed to show them how Jesus, the sacraments, the Gospel, the Eucharist, and Catholic spirituality in general can ease their pain, make them whole again, and bring

meaning and purpose to their lives.” (p. 57)

So much of our faith is defensive. We try to defend our faith — not live our faith. Catholics become authoritarian and dogmatic telling people how to live, for they are bound for hell by their immorality. Jesus did not come to condemn but to save. He came giving us a reason to live life to the fullest. That fullness of life is celebrating the truth, goodness, beauty, justice, and peace

of God’s call to follow his Son!

The Catholic Church cannot be the cheerless institution that smoothers living. We have to give people a desire to live that creates a more attractive and purposeful life. Instead of combating and forcing, demanding obedience and submission with punishment and penalty against the evils of this generation, we need to combat the social trends with joyfulness, cheerfulness, and delightfulness. We are to live a holy life

– not preach a holy life!

If we want a better life, if we want a better society, we have to be better; that is holy. That is Jesus’s call! Holiness, in essence, is making the best of our lives. It is becoming the best-version-of-ourself. Holiness demands that we do not waste even a moment of our lives. Our lives and life itself is too precious. However, the major thrust of Satan is to waste our lives following shallow desires: to be worldly wise. Instead, we ought to celebrate the divine call of God and follow Jesus with our whole heart, mind, strength and body: To hear God’s call to be holy!

“Holiness is simply the application of the values, principles, and spirit of the Gospel to the circumstances of our everyday lives, one moment at a time. It is not complicated; it is disarmingly simple. But simple is not the same as easy” (p. 60).

Some of the greatest achievements are the results of the problems and troubles we faced in life; for in embracing our struggles and failures, we trust all the more in God Who teaches us through these disciplines. Many have false notions, thinking that we live our lives to solve our problems. This is false. The problems we face are not for us to solve and move on to the next one, but in the process of problem solving, our lives are changed. We become a better-version of ourselves after each problem is resolved. Recognizing our need to change, to become better, we face our problems with a constructive attitude, knowing that in some fashion God is going to use this problem to make us holy. And becoming holy, we begin to make the lives of others better. This was the mission of Jesus: to better our lives. He did this by taking away our sins. However, He did not come to take away our problems, but to teach us how to face each problem with His grace to Trust Him.

Prayer to be Holy!

Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding,

and my entire will, All I have and call my own.

You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it.

Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace,

that is enough for me.

God is to be found in the simplest of our daily activities and especially through total surrender to whatever is His will for each of us. That is the message of Rev. Jean-Pierre de Caussade, author of Abandonment to Divine Providence (read it). He encourages us to "live in the present moment," accepting everyday obstacles with faith, humility and love,

which guides believers to holiness through the practice of the virtues.

The practice of self-abandonment to God's will is the key to attaining true virtue which leads to real holiness. Holiness is not pietism, but is virtue training. Developing the four cardinal virtues of justice,

temperance, prudence, and fortitude makes one holy.

To determine God’s will, we live according to our vocation: single, married, religious, or priesthood. We embrace the day’s duties and

perform them God’s way. As St. Elizebeth Ann Seton taught:

God’s will; God’s way.

Holiness is not extraordinary feats that God expects of us to grow in holiness, but rather virtuous attention to every detail in our lives and humble acceptance of our daily duties in life as coming from His hand. The Second Vatican Council affirmed this teaching in the document called Lumen Gentium (read this too): “All the disciples of Christ, persevering in prayer and praising God, should present themselves as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. Everywhere on earth they must bear witness to Christ and give an answer to those who seek an

account of that hope of eternal life which is in them.” (LG 10)

Holiness is only possible through the grace of God. We must always remember that. We, the Family of God, are always seeking holiness through the Holy Spirit. He inspires us as we develop the virtues of justice, temperance, prudence and fortitude. Our exercise of the virtues allows the Father to infuse in us his Spirit as it did on Pentecost. It is the

Holy Spirit who moves us to perfect our love for God’s holiness.

All are invited to come to this inaugural event to help restore and renew family values to our children, community and most importantly to our very own families.

We become disgruntled by the many challenges to the social fabric; yet we have faith that if we commit to Jesus He will give us the grace to persevere, exemplifying his teaching to love one another. That is why we offer this conference so you and your family may be holy.
