(No. 1). (No. 24).

Dear Friends of St. Louise,

About a year ago I heard a story on NPR about some young couples who were dedicated to living their lives completely naturally, to preserve their personal health as well as that of the planet. The story took an interesting twist when the reporter said that these couples had made the radical choice to use Natural Family Planning (NFP) as a way to live their values of not using drugs of any kind unless there was no other viable option. The couples were also concerned about the effects on fish from the high levels of estrogen that have passed from women’s bodies into Earth’s waterways as a result of the use of hormone-based contracep-tive methods. Interestingly, there was no indication from the report that these couples were religious in any way other than their dedication to a natural lifestyle.

On July 25 it will be 50 years since Pope Paul VI’s encycli-cal, Humanae Vitae, was issued. In it, the Pope reaffirmed the Church’s long-held teaching that NFP is the only morally acceptable method to regulate the birth of children. Anyone who was old enough to be paying attention at that time remembers that this encyclical was met with harsh criti-cism from within as well as outside the Church. Many Cath-olic publications have marked the anniversary recently. The July 2018 edition of Priest magazine noted that only 13% of Catholics who attend Mass weekly say that using artificial con-traception is wrong.

If you take time to read the encyclical, you will find that Pope Paul showed pastoral sensitivity for married cou-ples: “The transmission of human life . . . has always been a cause of great joy to them, even though it sometimes entails many difficulties.” (No. 1). He encouraged pastors to be under-standing with couples and their struggles, and urged couples not to become discouraged by the difficulties they may face in remaining faithful to the Church’s teachings but to find strength in prayer and the sacraments. He called upon the scientific community to explain “more thoroughly the conditions favora-ble to a proper regulation of births.” (No. 24). I learned from listening to that NPR report that there are now apps women can use to more precisely track their fertility cycles.

The values of the “natural lifestyle” couples in the NPR report and the values of the Church in insisting on only Natural Family Planning spring from the same place. Both honor and look to the created order to guide moral deci-sions. The Church takes the extra step and says that, through observing and understanding the created order, we can discover God’s purpose for our lives. In family life: “The transmission of human life is a most serious role in which Article continues on the following page.

Fr. Gary’s article continued. married people collaborate freely and responsibly with God the Crea-tor.” (No.1) For a couple using NFP, there is no contradiction “between the two divine laws—that which governs the transmitting of life and that which governs the fostering of married love.” (No.24) But the use of artificial contraception, at one level or another, creates a contradic-tion between these two values. In an important way, artificial contra-ception undermines a couple’s “yes” to marriage as God intends: a union of love that is indissoluble, faithful, and open to children.

I am fully aware that this teaching is not an easy one to embrace; nei-ther is it an easy one to communicate. But I need to preach the full teaching of the Church, when that teaching is easy and when it is not. If you are interested in learning more about NFP, p. 14 of the July/August Northwest Catholic offers a thoughtful article, and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ website will link you to many re-sources (http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/marriage-and-family/natural-family-planning/resources/humanae-vitae.cfm). And I am al-ways happy to talk with anyone who would like to do so.

With deep respect and love for the joys and struggles of married and family life,

Fr. Gary Zender

Dear friends of St. Louise,

As I’ve shared previously, it is my intention to foster Youth Discipleship in our goal of Evangeliza-

tion. To achieve this goal this past winter St. Louise opened a new full time staff position: a Pastoral Assis-

tant for Junior High Youth Ministry and Youth Confirmation. In collaboration with our current Pastoral As-

sistant for Youth Ministry, Annarose Jowenson, and our new Director of Evangelization, Katie O’Neill, this

new position would have fostered missionary discipleship among our 6th-8th grade youth as well as contin-

uing the current good work of the parish in implementing our task of quality youth Confirmation prepara-

tion. I am writing to you to communicate the status of this situation.

A confluence of events has led me to make the decision that with an eye to good stewardship and

careful planning for our future, we are no longer able to pursue hiring a candidate for this role. There

were a few things that came together at once, including financial advice from our Parish Finance Council

and a prayerful discernment about finding the right candidate to accompany our youth. I will be giving a

“state of the parish” homily in September and will communicate more detail about these events at that

time.

I have shared this news with the staff and the St. Louise consultative bodies (including Pastoral

Council, Finance Council, Worship Commission, Community Life Commission and Evangelization Commis-

sion). I have communicated with Annarose my two primary directives for our work in evangelizing our

young people: quality Confirmation preparation and ministry that touches the hearts of our youth in

such a way that leads them closer to God in Jesus Christ. In the coming weeks we will be working togeth-

er to reimagine how we might work toward these directives with fewer staff resources than I had initially

planned.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Gary Zender

Adult Faith Formation Presents an Evening with Deacon Ben Bray Saturday, August 11, 6:30—9PM, Parish Hall

The St. Louise Adult Faith Formation Committee is pleased to announce an evening with our very own Deacon Ben Bray, who will present an introduction to St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. Deacon Ben’s discussion will also highlight Pope Francis’ efforts to convert this deep theology from the abstract to the concrete reality of everyday life. So, please mark your calendar and join the Adult faith Formation Committee for an evening with Deacon Ben Bray. Contact Katie O’Neill, [email protected], or Deacon Ben Bray, [email protected], with any questions.

Financial Peace University (FPU) Classes at St. Louise Parish

FPU is a 9-week course that teaches how to manage money from a biblical perspective. It teaches eight key steps to financial freedom and peace of mind. Groups meet once a week for two hours, and the course is just as fun as it is practical! Visit www.stlouise.org/FPU to choose your preferred class schedule and regis-ter.

• No matter what stage of life you are at, this information is valuable. If you are spending money, making purchases, or trying to pay off your mortgage or other debt, this course is for you.

• Partial scholarship is available when you register. Don’t let the cost keep you from getting the benefit of what Dave Ramsey has to teach.

• You do not share any personal financial data. • Visit www.stlouise.org/FPU for more details. • If you are interested in facilitating a class, please sign up at www.stlouise.org/facilitateFPU.

You can expect to receive an email after providing us with your preferred class schedule, and then you can officially register for the class. If you are single, kindly ask a friend or family member to attend with you. The course assignments require you have someone to do them with, as an accountability partner.

When parishioners sit down face to face and work through their hopes, dreams, and fears about money, amazing things will happen. Talking about the challenges that everyone faces does provide a level of confidence that you can make your money work for you - the way God intended it to.

Good Start Back to School Drive It starts this week! Our Social Concerns Committee will again be collecting new school supplies for Bellevue School District students most in need. School staff recom-mend these students, who also qualify for Federal free and reduced-price lunches. Your donation may be the only school sup-plies available for them.

You can make a difference in a student’s life by buying and re-turning new school supplies to the School Bus Boxes located by the main entrance of the church no later than August 5. Please see the insert in this week’s bulletin with all the details, or you can check out the Congregations for Kids website at www.congregations4kids.org. The requested items have changed, so please check the list on the insert before pur-chasing. Questions? Please contact Jackie Rial at 425-649-8643 or [email protected]. Thank you for your sup-port!

(No.24.)

Padre Gary Zender
