Dear Friends of St. Louise, We’re in a time of year when people can feel even more stressed than they do at other times. Gifts to buy, decorations to put up, parties to attend, Advent/Christmas con-certs to attend … the list goes on. Here at the parish we have extra celebrations as well: the Reconciliation services this past week, Our Lady of Guadalupe on Tuesday night, the annual Advent Concert on Friday night, Simbang Gabi on Saturday night – again, the list goes on and on. One person asked me recently, “Does St. Louise have a day of reflection or a faith formation event during Advent?” I replied, “No, there is already too much going on in people’s lives this time of year to add one more thing!” (There will be other times when we will offer those kinds of opportunities, so stay tuned!) In the meantime, let us remain focused on the peace of Christ, and give every anxiety over to him. He was born as the Prince of Peace – so let his peace reign in your heart! Let nothing disturb you; let him be in control of all things. (He is anyway, so just go with it!) In this season of giving, I want to recognize the many ways that you, St. Louise parishioners, express your gratitude to God, Who is the source of all that is good. Thank you for sharing your time, talent and treasure here in our parish and school and beyond. Thank you for your generosity to Catholic Community Services’ “Centennial Appeal for the Poor” this weekend. I recently received notes of thanks from Kelly Hickman at the Missions Office to our parish for the collec-tion we had in September for the Catholic Campaign for Human De-velopment (CCHD) and for the October Collection for the World Mis-sions. Our gift for CCHD amounted to $6,036.280 and the World Missions collection was $6,043.85. Thank you! I would like to especially highlight the CCHD collection, which as Kelly put it, helps “to empower people who live in poverty to bring the trans-forming mercy of Jesus into their communities. With this support, you are extending the hand of solidarity to those living on the margins. To learn more about CCHD in our archdiocese and in the U.S., please visit www.seattlearchdiocese.org/chcd and www.usccb.org/cchd and

www.powertyusa.org.”

Kelly closed her letter with a beautiful quote from Pope Francis:

Among our tasks as witnesses to the love of Christ Is that of giving a voice to the cry of the poor.

Happy Second Sunday of Advent!

Fr. Gary Zender

Padre Gary Zender

Activities and Events

Forever Young – A Group for 55+ and/or Retired Advent is here! During December we don’t hold our general meeting. Rather, like Mary, we prayerfully ponder and await the Lord’s coming anew. Our next general gathering will be Wednesday, January 23, 2019. Till then may the peace of Advent and the joy of Christmas fill your hearts.

Interest Groups:

Knitting Group: The Knitting Group will have you in stitches once again, and soon! The group meets the fourth Thursday of the month, coming up on January 24 at 9:45AM in the Elbert Library. Please contact Shirley Johnson, 425-746-1161,with questions. Till then, keep knitting! Let every stitch be a prayer. “Lord knit us all closer in relationship to you and each other.” Book Club: Our next meeting will be on Friday, January 25, at 9:45AM in the St. Mother Teresa Room. We will discuss “The Gentleman from Moscow” by Amor Towels. Share a book, write a new chapter of friendship! If you have questions, please contact Chris Boldizsar, 425-999-0738. Scrabble Group: Caution, this may be a wordy one! The Scrabble group is eager to meet and resume the fun! A start date is still pending. Watch the bulletin for details and remember to keep your word! Please contact Kathy Reifers at 425-746-6457. Let’s Eat Out!: The “LEO” (Let’s Eat Out) Group is in for a surprise! Our own Kathy Reifers will be hosting a Christmas Brunch! The date is Friday, December 14, at 10:30AM. The gathering will be a potluck, so please RSVP to Kathy at 425-746-6457. Light Rail Ridership Training: Tuesday January 8, 2019 at 10AM in the Parish Hall, with an optional trip to Sea-Tac Airport on Friday January 11, 2019. Contact Bob Leingang 425-643-0779 or [email protected] Nordic Museum and Viking Exhibit: Based on the overwhelming success of our visit in November we are asking if there is sufficient interest to plan another trip to the Nordic Museum while the Viking Exhibit is still here. Manual wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-serve basis for use within the Museum. Please let Bob know if you would be interested and if you can drive. Bob Leingang 425-643-0779 [email protected]

Grief Support Group 3rd Tuesday of the month, 7PM in the Parish Office!

Come join us Tuesday, December 18, from 7-8:30PM in the Parish Office. This group is a safe and sacred place to be heard without comment or advice giving. We practice being present to each other in our pain, accepting ourselves and each other as we are, and trusting that our listening hearts offer healing and blessing. Loss and the experience of grief is not limited to death of a loved one. Loss of a marriage, job, dream, relation-ship, health and pets all result in grief and pain. Hope and heal-ing are the pathway forward. Come and experience healing! Immediate help is available! If you are suffering grief for any reason and would like immediate support, please call David Gehrig (425-214-5466) for help. Listening ears, caring hearts and experienced volunteers are available to walk with you along this painful road from loss to new life.

Funeral Ministry …stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand. "(Lk. 21:28) Those who serve others stand erect with heads raised! Come and volunteer with the St. Louise funeral ministry! Contact David Gehrig at 425-214-5466 or [email protected].

Women’s Bible Study Please join us for a new Bible study series at St. Louise Par-ish. Our first focus will be on excerpts from the Gospel of John using a Bible study program published by Dynamic Catholic titled, “Turning Point.” This program includes workbooks for participants and brief lectures on DVD – there is some recom-mended “homework” to do between sessions, but the workload is light and we are confident that any level of involvement will be rewarding. We will be meeting the first and third Thursdays of the month, from 8:30-10AM, in St. Louise Parish’s Center Wing Room B (CW-B). A second group will be meeting in parallel, also on the first and third Thursdays of the month, from 7:15-9PM, also in CW-B. You are welcome to join either of these groups, or to attend sessions of the one that best fits your schedule on each meeting day. If you have any questions, please contact Ingrid Flaat at 425-443-9151 or Caya Sanz de Santamaria at [email protected].

St. Louise Charger Cards

Charger Cards is a scrip fundraiser that our parish and school partici-pate in year-round. St. Louise buys gift cards at a discount from a sup-plier and offers them for sale at face value. The difference in cost is what St. Louise keeps as a profit for our parish school. The average profit is $5 for every $100 of gift card. This is a unique fundraiser because you buy gift cards for stores that you

already use. It is a rare fundraiser that doesn’t ask you to buy anything you don't already buy.

The idea is that families buy groceries and gas (or spend at restaurants or other stores) that are in their normal budget. Instead of paying with a check or cash at the store, you pay with a gift card that you purchased from St. Louise. This way St. Louise School earns a small percentage of every normal purchase you make. Charger Cards are available outside the church today. There are hundreds of stores to select from. It's guaranteed that there is at least one store you are planning to shop at this week whose gift card you could first buy from St. Louise. Charger Cards are typically available between Masses on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month. Thank you for your support of St. Louise School through your pur-chase of Charger Cards.

We’re proud of our hard-working and talented middle school students, along with their skilled teachers, Mr. Glaser, Mrs. Williams, and Mrs. Bannick. Thank You for Your Support Last month we had a successful and fun School Auction, and last week we had a spirited and joyful St. Nicholas Breakfast and Bazaar. Notice of Unauthorized Ministry

The Archdiocese has received reports from some of our parishes that an archbishop and priest of the Missionaries of the Divine Mercy of the “Old Catholic Church” are in the greater Seattle area and plan to celebrate Masses and possibly confer sacraments. Archbishop Fermin Rosas Garcia, from California, and Fr. Antonio (Tony) Mota, from Mexico, are clergy with the “Old Catholic Church,” which is not in communion with the Roman Catholic Church and not affiliated in any way with the Archdiocese of Seattle. Any Masses or sacra-ments they attempt to celebrate are not authorized or approved by the Archdiocese of Seattle. It has been reported that Fr. Mota has already celebrated Mass in a private home in West Seattle. We understand that Archbishop Rosas Garcia and Fr. Mota intend to celebrate Mass for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12 at the Mother of Mercy Chapel in Enumclaw, as well as possibly offer at that time Baptisms, Confirmations and First Commun-ions. The Mother of Mercy Chapel is a private enterprise operated by one individual, Mr. Jim Meuchel, and is not authorized by the Archdiocese of Seattle, nor is it sponsored or approved by the Catholic Church. It has been the site of suspect activities, such as the display of “bleeding” hosts, which Mr. Meuchel claims to receive from an angel but which he has de-clined to authenticate. Any Masses or sacraments attempted at this site are neither author-ized nor approved.

Archbishop Sartain urges all Roman Catholics not to participate in the activities of the Old Catholic Church or the Mother of Mercy Chapel but to seek spiritual nourishment from the celebration of the sacraments in their parishes.

Called to Serve as Christ – A campaign for our PRIESTS, SISTERS & FAMILY OF FAITH

"The Called to Serve as Christ campaign is an expression of our deep gratitude to those who have gone before us, especially our bishops, priests, and religious sisters, for the tireless ways they have lived out their vocations for the Lord and for us." - J. PETER SARTAIN, ARCHBISHOP OF SEATTLE

St. Louise Parish will be participating in the Called to Serve as Christ campaign May 2019 – November 2019 together with the Eastside, Northern, and Snohomish parishes. To learn more about the Called to Serve as Christ Campaign, please visit www.calledtoserveaschrist.org.

In Memory of… My dad (Luz) Luvimindo Laurente

Dick Bailey

In Gratitude for…

My parents Bob & Barbara Kelly-founding members of the parish. Their commitment to the church and the commu-nity of St. Louise have been a lifelong ex-ample for our family! (They are currently

members of St. Monica's on Mercer Island)

All the blessings we receive, for all the things we have AND, for all "the things WE DO NOT HAVE", for the gift of compassion and love, and for the gift of life.

All God has blest us with this past year. The St. Louise parish staff, who have all - from A(bbott) to Z(ender) - made me welcome and cared for me like family since the day I (or they) came to the parish. The St. Louise parish and the Catholic Church for all it has done for us!

I want to partner in our mission to Ignite Faith and Witness God’s Love at St. Louise because…

We believe that humanity could be better if we learn to be more loving and compassionate with one another.

We are a community church not an individual church.

FROM A HEART OF GRATITUDE WE LIVE OUT STEWARDSHIP AS A WAY OF LIFE We support St. Louise Parish...
