THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus answered him,
“Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” (Lk 9:57-58)

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The Anchor
One of the themes dearest to Paul is the gift of Christ’s “freedom” as opposed to “yoke of slavery”: “for freedom Christ
set us free.” Christ set us free from the slavery to sin, the deadly yoke that prevent us from fully experiencing the communion with our heavenly Father. This freedom, gained for us by Jesus through his death, is the possibility for us to decide for God, to set our hearts towards our creator and Father, origin of life and love. In our mindset freedom is the power or right to act as one wants without hindrance or restraint, but actually, Paul looks at freedom in a slightly different way: freedom is not just the capacity of choosing, it’s rather being attracted to what’s good, beautiful, true and deciding for it. Not all the choices have the same value and importance: freedom prompts us to decide for what brings us closer to God, even though we all know that sometimes we decide for the exact opposite, for what’s wrong, ugly and deceiving. Paul reminds us that “he (Jesus) is our peace, he who made both one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity.” Ep 2:14) Freedom in Christ means “breaking down” any “dividing walls of enmity”, especially “walls” of prejudice and rash judgment. In the Gospel we have some clear examples of this. The Samaritans were stunned at seeing Jesus performing miracles, but they couldn’t accept the fact that he belonged to a different religious tradition, the Jewish one: their prejudice was stronger than their interest towards Jesus, therefore they ended up rejecting him. The disciples reacted to this, showing another type of prejudice: “these people rejected you, Lord! They deserve to be punished harshly and die”. How many times we too react as the Samaritans and the disciples did! We judge and “condemn”, we build walls in front of the poor, the banished, the stranger, the sinner. Jesus invites us to accept his freedom, the freedom of following him in our journey as a way to embrace our brothers and sisters. How beautiful it is Jesus’ invitation to experience his freedom! We don’t have to be afraid if “the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head”, because he is with us. He wants us not to worry about earthly matters (“let the dead bury the dead”) but just follow him; he invites us to “set our hands to the plow”, decide wholeheartedly for him, without “looking to what was left behind”. Fr. Paolo

“AMERICAN DREAM” EXHIBIT ON NORTH AMERICAN SAINTS
What is the “American Dream”? A group of university students from across the Uni ted S ta te s a re preparing an exhibit for the Meeting of Rimini, a cultural event that takes place every August in Italy, to explore this question. Our exhibit,
titled American Dream: a journey with American Saints aims to understand what it means to live sanctity nowadays. The work of the students will culminate in a presentation of the exhibit at the Meeting of Rimini this summer (August 19 - 25). Our hope is to travel to Italy in early August, few days prior to the Meeting, in order to participate in a pilgrimage in Milan and Rome. The exhibit will be then available to tour our campuses in the US! We need your support to complete the exhibit! Below you can find the link to the GoFundMe page for the exhibit. Any kind of donation, starting from one dollar, is crucial for us. Thanks for your generosity!
