SOME REFLECTIONS ONFASTING

Fasting, or more correctly, thepractice of abstinence forcertain days and certainperiods of the year, has longcaused difficulty in the minds ofmany Orthodox in NorthAmerica. Every year, as theEaster lent approachesOrthodox begin to wonderwhat, if anything, to do inpreparation for the feast. (Verylittle direction has come fromthe hierarchs of the Church byway of guidelines orexplanations and each parishpriest, if he does more thansimply announce that the fastis beginning, will saysomething different.) Ingeneral, I think it is safe to saythat the practice and idea offasting is largely ignored. Manypeople generally dismissfasting with the rather simpleand naive "This Is the twentiethcentury those rules were madefor the past and simpler days."Nonetheless, in spite ofpractice of most people, wemust take the practice offasting seriously, if for no otherreason than other people,throughout Christian history,have taken it seriously. It isvaluable here to consider notso much "how" to fast, as"why" fast. This deeper

understanding of the reasonfor this practice in Christianitywill help us in determining ourown fasting practices.We must first admit that fastinghas a firm foundation in theScripture and Tradition of theChurch, as well as the practiceof the Jewish community whichgave birth to the Church. Weknow for instance that Jesusfasted, that the disciples ofJohn the Baptist fasted, andthat Jesus said that prayer andfasting were necessary forcasting out certain evils.

Сваке године, како сеВаскршњи пост приближаваправославни почињу да сепитају шта, ако ишта даурадиту у припреми за празник.(Веома мало упутстава долазиод архијереја цркве путемусмеравања или објашњења спароха, већ он то једноставнонајави да пост ускоро почиње.У принципу, мислим да могурећи да је пракса и идеја постау великој мери игнорисана.Многи људи генералноодбацују пост као приличноједноставан и наиван "Ово једвадесети век та правила сунаправљене за протекле иједноставније дане." Ипак,упркос пракси већине људи,морамо схватити праксугладовања озбиљно, ако низбог чега другог онда због тогашто су и други народи, крозхришћанске историју, схватилиово за озбиљно. Зато је вредноовде да размотримо не толико"како" да постимо, колико"зашто" да постимо. Ово дубљеразумевање разлога за овупраксу у хришћанству ће нампомоћи у одређивањусопствене праксе Поста. II.Christian Stewardship ISproportional giving.

"What is the minimum?" Or,"how much do I have to give?"is NOT CHRISTIAN!!!DUESMENTALITY:We must lose the duesmentality as OrthodoxChristians.

A.We can not pay dues to theChurch-the Body of Christ-because then we believe thatwe have a 'right' to something:"It is my RIGHT to vote! It ismy RIGHT to be buried! It ismy RIGHT to be Kum/Sponsor!"

B.When we pay dues, wemisunderstand the Church asa collection of rights for us.This is much in the samemodel as paying dues to acountry club, or a civic group,

along with which we havecertain privileges to which weare 'entitled.' This mentalitybreeds such attitudes whichinspire very non-Christianthings such as member v. non-member fees, etc.

C.The 'fund-raiser' mentality isa losing proposition. If WE can-not support our own efforts asOrthodox Christian 'stewards/what does this say about ourcommitment to Christ?

D.We cannot rely on earnedincome to pay our bills. A goodAnnual Picnic or Dance will notenable us to accomplish plans.Nor can we rely on specialappeals to fund projects-justlook at any special appeal tosee the truth of this!

I thought I lived a pretty good life,I tried the Golden Rule,

And in a simple, child -like wayShe told of Calvary.

She said that Jesus died for meAnd that He rose again,

"Please. Daddy, place your trust inHim

And take His nail-scarred hand."

But I thought I was too busy thenShe was just a child, you know;So I turned a deaf ear as she

begged."Please Daddy, won`t you go?"

You see I had to mow the lawnAnd spade the flower bed,

But I would have stopped and goneHad I known what lay ahead.

Well, the months turned to years,And as she grew so fast,

Her thoughts turned to worldly,Things,

And her childhood days were past.

Yes, the years have slipped: as IGrow old

I find time for Sunday School,But now my daughter tells ME "no"She lives for Gold-without a Rule.

One by one the years have goneI hear her plea no more.

"Please Daddy, won`t you go withme?"

For her childhood days are o`er.

It seems when I am all alone,I can see her little face,

As she went alone to SundaySchool,

ALONE! To fill her place,

Neglect has brought me heartachesThat time cannot erase,

If only I had gone with herAnd been there in MY place!

So, Daddy, TAKE, your little girl!Don`t wait for her to say ,

8FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT:

THE SUNDAY OFORTHODOXY

Lent was in origin the time of finalpreparation for candidates for bap-tism at the Easter Vigil, and this isreflected in the readings at theLiturgy, today and on all the Sundaysof Lent. But that basic theme came tobe subordinated to later themes,which dominated the hymnographyof each Sunday. The dominanttheme of this Sunday since 843 hasbeen that of the victory of the icons.In that year the iconoclastic contro-versy, which had raged on and offsince 726, was finally laid to rest, andicons and their veneration wererestored on the first Sunday in Lent.Ever since, that Sunday been com-memorated as the "triumph ofOrthodoxy."Orthodox teaching about icons wasdefined at the Seventh EcumenicalCouncil of 787, which brought to anend the first phase of the attempt tosuppress icons. That teaching wasfinally re-established in 843, and it isembodied in the texts sung on thisSunday.

From Vespers:

"Inspired by your Spirit, Lord, theprophets foretold your birth as a childincarnate of the Virgin. Nothing cancontain or hold you; before the morn-ing star you shone forth eternallyfrom the spiritual womb of the Father.Yet you were to become like us andbe seen by those on earth. At theprayers of those your prophets inyour mercy reckon us fit to see your

light,

"for we praise your resurrection, holyand beyond speech. Infinite, Lord, asdivine, in the last times you willed tobecome incarnate and so finite; forwhen you took on flesh you made allits properties your own. So we depictthe form of your outward appearanceand pay it relative respect, and soare moved to love you; and through itwe receive the grace of healing, fol-lowing the divine traditions of theapostles.

"The grace of truth has shone out,the things once foreshadowed noware revealed in perfection. See, theChurch is decked with the embodiedimage of Christ, as with beauty not ofthis world, fulfilling the tent of wit-ness, holding fast the Orthodox faith.For if we cling to the icon of himwhom we worship, we shall not goastray. May those who do not sobelieve be covered with shame. Forthe image of him who becamehuman is our glory: we venerate it,but do not worship it as God. Kissingit, we who believe cry out: O God,save your people, and bless yourheritage."We have moved forward from unbe-lief to true faith, and have beenenlightened by the light of knowl-edge. Let us then clap our hands likethe psalmist, and offer praise andthanksgiving to God. And let ushonor and venerate the holy icons ofChrist, of his most pure Mother, andof all the saints, depicted on walls,panels and sacred vessels, settingaside the unbelievers' ungodly teach-ing.

For the veneration given to the iconpasses over, as Basil says, to itsprototype. At the intercession of yourspotless Mother, O Christ, and of allthe saints, we pray you to grant usyour great mercy. We venerate youricon, good Lord, asking forgivenessof our sins, O Christ our God. For youfreely willed in the flesh to ascend thecross, to rescue from slavery to theenemy those whom you had formed.So we cry to you with thanksgiving:You have filled all things with joy, ourSavior, by coming to save the world.The name of this Sunday reflects thegreat significance which iconspossess for the Orthodox Church.They are not optional devotionalextras, but an integral part ofOrthodox faith and devotion. Theyare held to be a necessaryconsequence of Christian faith in theincarnation of the Word of God, theSecond Person of the Trinity, inJesus Christ. They have asacramental character, makingpresent to the believer the person orevent depicted on them. So theinterior of Orthodox churches is oftencovered with icons painted on wallsand domed roofs, and there is alwaysan icon screen, or iconostasis,separating the sanctuary from thenave, often with several rows oficons. No Orthodox home iscomplete without an icon corner,where the family prays.Icons are venerated by burninglamps and candles in front of them,by the use of incense and by kissing.But there is a clear doctrinaldistinction between the venerationpaid to icons and the worship due toGod. The former is not only relative, itis in fact paid to the person

represented by the icon. Thisdistinction safeguards the venerationof icons from any charge of idolatry.Although the theme of the victory ofthe icons is a secondary one on thisSunday, by its emphasis on theincarnation it points us to the basicChristian truth that the one whosedeath and resurrection we celebrateat Easter was none other than theWord of God who became human inJesus Christ.

Ima na Balkanu jedna zemlja,koja se granici sama sasobom. Gde živi najlepšinarod, a natalitet opada. Gdene zaposleni najviše rade, gdena najplodnijoj zemlji žive ljudikoji gladuju. Gde vozovi kasnepo redu vožnje.

Gde svi igraju fudbal, apobeduju u vaterpolu, košarci,rukometu ili odbojci. Gde svižure na posao, a niko ne stižena vreme. Gde osmocasovnoradno vreme traje dvanaestsati. Gde je zdravstvo besplat-no, a lecenje skupo. Gde sunovinari slobodni da napišu štagod im se naredi.

Gde je svetska kriza dobiladržavljanstvo. Gde su javnenabavke tajne, a državne tajnejavne. Gde se ratovi nikad nezavršavaju. Gde se istorijaponavlja svaki dan. Gde sunajbogatiji oni koji nikad nisuradili. Gde je strana valutauzeta za domacu.

Gde ljudi slave slavu, a psujuBoga. Gde pametne zbog ner-azumevanja proglašavajuludacima, a ludake sposobni-ma. Gde nepismeni pišu istori-ju. Gde su zakoni nezakoniti, aanarhija normalno stanje. Gdevlast prezire gradane kaoneželjene svedoke.

Gde se živi od buducnosti, jerna sadašnjost nemaju pravo.Gde se svako svakome smeš-ka, a niko nikome ne želidobro. Gde sudski postupcitraju duže od života. Gde susamo poplave nacin navodnja-vanja zemljišta. Gde prizivajudiktatora, a demokratiju sma-traju porezom na budale. Gdesmatraju da ce zemlja višenapredovati ako što višenazaduje. Gde nisi normalan,ako ne poludiš. Gde živišsamo zato da bi umro. Gde jevreme beskonacno, a glupostbesmrtna... :(

Ima na Balkanu jedna zemljakoja je ozidala mnogo Crkava iManastira (kako u zemlji, tako iu inostranstvu)a u koje neodlazi da se Bogu moli.

STEWARDSHIPTrue Orthodox ChristianStewardship is committing aregular amount of our time, ourtalents and our treasures toensure that the work of Christand His Church gets done!

A.We are called to giveregularly:

"On the first day of every week,each of you is to put somethingaside and store it up, as he mayprosper... and when I arrive, Iwill send those whom youaccredit by letter to carry yourgift to Jerusalem" (I Corinthians16: 2-3).

1. Regular offerings help to off-set the times of year whenthings slow down, or giving maybecome more difficult.

B.Common examples of non-Stewardship giving:

1.Crises-giving: the Church is inneed-give! Infamous apeals let-ters, etc.

2.Left-over giving: after we dowhat we "needed" to do (pay thebills, etc.), THEN we give toGod.
