THE BAPTISM OF JESUS We bring the wondrous season of Christmas to

a close today with the celebration of the “Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.” This first cycle of The Liturgical Year began with the celebration of Advent and centered upon the birth of the Christ Child. We now look forward to the second great cycle with the coming of Lent which will begin on February 18th with the celebration of Ash Wednesday. In the meantime, we will return to green vestments next Sunday as we celebrate five Sundays as a respite before we enter into the Easter cycle. Today’s celebration brings the infancy of Jesus to a close and opens up his adult ministry with his baptism in the Jordan. All four gospels have stories of the baptism of Jesus, so that in this year’s cycle of “B Readings” we will proclaim Mark’s version of this event.

EUCHARISTIC DAY SUCCESSFUL We thank all those parishioners who took a leadership role in our Eucharistic Day this past Monday as the living presence of the Lord Jesus remained exposed on our altar throughout the day. Each year we set aside this day in honor of Saint John Neumann who was so significant in the early days of our Parish Family. We appreciate the efforts of the faculty of the Catholic School and the catechists in the Faith Formation programs to bring their students to the church that day, and instill in them a deep belief in the living presence of the Eucharist.

CHRISTMAS FLOWER COLLECTION We thank all those persons who gave in the

Christmas Flower collection as we remember their loved ones in our prayers. We remind all parishioners that the money collected for these flowers not only helps to supply the decorations for the Christmas season, including the poinsettias, trees and other décor; but this collection is used to offset some of the expenses for decorating the church building throughout the year.

FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR 2015 The financial statements sent home from the Parish Office will only include contributions made in the envelope system. Those who have given to the Church Alive Campaign will receive a report of their contributions from the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

CAMPAIGN CELEBRATION WEEKEND Next weekend, January 17-18 will be the Celebration Weekend in all 199 parishes across the Diocese of Pittsburgh to mark an important milestone in Our Campaign For The Church Alive. This will be the successful conclusion of the Solicitation Phase of this historic initiative. The Pledge Redemption Phase continues for five years after the completion of our parish campaign. On Monday, January 26th Bishop David Zubik will announce the results and impact of the campaign on the spiritual life of those affected by the generosity of so many donors.

USHER GATHERING ON THURSDAY We invite all those who serve in the Ministry of Ushering and others who might wish to join this Ministry to gather with us this Thursday, January 15th at 7:00 p.m. in Marian Hall as we welcome the new leaders of this Ministry. This will be an important time for all those who serve in this Ministry to become more familiar with all of the new procedures that now take place in this Ministry.

NEXT WEEK: SECOND COLLECTION We remind all parishioners of the importance

of the second collection next week, which is entitled “St. Anthony School and Sensory Handicapped Children” for which there is an envelope in our packet. The importance of this collection is seen in the fact that not only do our contributions go to help the needy children of the Diocese, but also the same amount is applied to our Parish Share assessment.

PARISH FAMILY GRATITUDE As members of the Parish Family in which our Catholic School is such an important asset, we would like to acknowledge this year’s disbursement from the “Mary Elizabeth Schmitt Memorial Library Fund” of $4,681.81. The Schmitt Family created this fund in 1997 in honor of Mary Beth Schmitt who served so faithfully in our school. We wish to thank Mr. Robert Schmitt for his continual support of our catholic school in memory of his beloved wife and assure his family that they remain in our prayers.

AN ANCIENT BAPTISTERY

One of the most ancient and enduring sites for baptism in Rome is the Church of San Giovanni in Fonte. This church is in fact a baptistery, and houses the font for the Lateran Basilica, the cathedral of Rome. The emperor Constantine sponsored its construction in the year

315, and it is therefore the oldest baptistery in the world. It is the model for nearly all baptisteries.

I’m supposed to E-V-A-N-G-E-L-I-Z-E? Yes, our anointing at baptism calls us to evangelize. The graces received at baptism and confirmation are your mandate to evangelize. The Holy Spirit gives strength to fulfill your mission. Real evangelization is authentic. Tell your own story. Share what excites you about being Catholic. If you’re a trained catechist of if you’re a social media user, utilize those gifts too! Facebook, Google+, Twitter; even your greeting cards, emails and letters can be evangelistic. Remember the early Church used letters to share the Gospel. Be creative!

LITURGY COMMITTEE MEETING Members are reminded to come for the meeting on Tuesday, January 13 at 7:00 p.m. Submit agenda items to Jim Finn, 412-486-4100.

RELIGIOUS FORMATION

Faith Sharing for the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord The CHRISTMAS SEASON concludes THIS Sunday, January 11. Celebrate the Wonders of His Love by renewing YOUR baptism on this final day of the season! Listen to, or re-read the account of Jesus’ baptism in Luke 3:15-22 and hear the words of God saying to YOU too, “you are my beloved; with you I am well pleased.” Then assure someone in your family or circle of friends of their “beloved” status with you. Let the baptismal JOY grow as you pass on this divine message.

Keep celebrating the truth that YOU are a “beloved” one of God’s family!

Remind children to bring their study chart of December-January to their class.

Special Days this WeekSpecial Days this Week January 11 – The Baptism of the Lord. As the baptism of Jesus marked the beginning of his public ministry, so the baptism of each Christian calls them to devote their lives as children of God to the works of God in their daily life as a married, single or committed religious “beloved of God”. January 11 – Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos was a Redemptorist priest, missionary from Germany who served in our parish and neighboring churches in the 1850’s. He had been asked to become bishop of Pittsburgh but begged the pope to let him remain serving among the poor immigrants of our diocese. January 13- Saint Hilary, Doctor of the Church is noted for his defense of the Faith, especially in teaching about the threefold persons of God-the blessed Trinity. January 17 – Saint Anthony of Egypt is considered the founder of monasticism. He gathered friends to live a communal life and to sacrifice and pray for the good of all the world. January 18 – 25 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity The theme for the week of prayer in 2015 comes from the gospel of John: "Jesus said to her: “Give me to drink.” It was proposed by a group of Brazilian Christians called together by the National Council of Christian Churches of Brazil (CONIC). The biblical gesture of offering water to whomever arrives, as a way of welcoming and sharing, is something that is repeated in all regions of Brazil. The proposed study and meditation on the story of Jesus meeting a Samaritan woman at the well is to help people and communities to realize the dialogical dimension of the project of Jesus, which we call the Kingdom of God.

Home with the Lord Remember Lord and welcome into your Kingdom those who have died and have gone before us marked in the sign of faith, especially Lucille Riebel, sister of Lorraine Cross. Please remember to pray for the consolation of their loved ones.

A VOCATION VIEW At his baptism Jesus is supported by the presence of the Spirit and of his Father. We, too, are affirmed in our baptism and called to holiness. Are you being called to live your baptismal commitment as a priest or consecrated religious? ( Matt. 3:13-17)

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar

The Gospel today points to Jesus’ humanity; like us He needed RECOGNITION. ( You are my Son ), AFFECTION ( My beloved Son ) and AFFIRMATION ( with you I am well pleased. ) In our families it is easy to focus on irritating behaviors and take for granted all the positives. This New Year takes a lesson from God the Father, be an AFFIRMER and not a BLAMER.

PASTORAL IMPRESSIONS from Father John The brutal below zero wind chill factors of this past week forced many of us to change our plans, alter our schedules and reduce our activity in this rapidly pacing world in which we live. The frigid temperatures of each day put a definite cringle into our preferred life style. So, sitting and musing about such a drastic shift in the weather patterns of our beautiful grounds, I offer ten possible reflections on such a week: FIRST AND FOREMOST --- it reminds us in no uncertain terms that God is the Creator and Master of the world, and no technological advancements of any age will be able to control the power of the universe. SECOND --- it demands that families spend more time in the warmth of their own homes so that their love for and sharing of each other lives has the possibility of reaching new heights of family life. THIRD --- it charges up our school children to bounce out of bed in the morning anticipating the fact that school will be closed for the entire day, or at worst there will be at least a two hour delay. FOURTH --- it offers to those who work on road crews and the maintenance departments of our highways overtime pay and the happiness they experience in the paycheck they receive at the month’s end. FIFTH --- it allows resourceful builders of snow creations to decorate their front lawns and backyards with ingenious replicas made from the softness of the falling snow. SIXTH --- it gives educated meteorologists ample opportunities to strut their ability to predict the exact nature of the weather conditions for the coming week so as to win the admiration of the television viewer. SEVENTH --- it promises to all of us who look for the grandeur of the coming spring that this year’s flowerbeds and family gardens will bloom magnificently. EIGHTH --- it presents a breathtaking spectacle of ice covered tree limbs for those who are brave enough to walk among the beautiful grounds of our sacred property. NINTH --- it is a telltale reminder for those seeing our partially constructed Cemetery Mausoleum that our commitment to this project will allow us to finish this building for all to use even in the cold weather. LAST AND MOST IMPORTANTLY --- it reminds us in no uncertain terms that God is the Creator and Master of the world, and no technological advancements or any age will be to control the power of the universe.
