FISH DINNER VOLUNTEERS LOOKING FOR HELP

We are looking for a person or persons to work closely with the Fish Dinner Coordinators to learn the entire operating process to insure that we can continue this wonderful Lenten tradition for many years to come. Please contact Paul or Ginny Penezic at 412-487-5211.

Anyone who has volunteered in the past or anyone who would be interested in joining the Fish Dinner Volunteer Team is asked to call Paul and Ginny Penezic at 412-487-5211 to confirm your spot on the Roster. All adults volunteering need to have completed the mandated clearances required by the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Our first Lenten Fish Fry Dinner will be on March 8, 2019.

THIS WEEKEND HELP FRANCISCAN SISTERS

GET A CONVENT

Sisters Bernadette and Mary Gianna are administrators of the Ark and the Dove Retreat Center and they are in need of your help. Since the Sisters came last October the ministry at the retreat center has so flourished that the Sisters needed to move to make room for the additional requests from the guests. They also need more room so additional Sisters from their community can come and assist them in the ministry. There is a house adjacent to the retreat center property that has been secured by the Board of Directors and the Sisters need to raise the rest of the monies to complete the purchase. They would be most grateful for your support! The Sisters will be available after all the Masses the weekend of February 2 – 3, 2019. Make checks payable to: The Ark and The Dove, Inc. Or go to the website and click the tab labeled Project Olive Branch to donate. For more information, contact the Sisters at 724-444-8055 or at www.thearkandthedoveworldwide.org TRIVIA NIGHT AT ST. URSULA PARISH

Trivia Night at St. Ursula is on Friday, February 22, 2019, in the Parish Social Hall. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and a buffet dinner, catered by Remo’s, will start at 6:00 p.m. It's BYOB, mixers will be pro-vided. Trivia begins at 7:00 p.m. Mulligans will be available for purchase. Suggested team size is 8 peo-ple. Either bring a team or we will help form smaller groups into teams. Cost is $25 per person. RSVP forms are in the vestibules and on the St. Ursula website. RSVPs are due by Sunday, February 17, 2019. If you have any questions, please call Jan Kowalski at 412-654-4721.

I am confused or distressed? Private time available with a spiritual director

I need some advice or comfort? Informal discussion and fellowship

I haven’t felt close to God for quite a while? Opportunity for prayer

Save the dates, February 8, 9, and 10, 2019 and make a reservation to spend the weekend at St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center. Call Chuck Fischer, 412-487-4667, Brad Fischer, 412-487-5109, or Jim Karcher, 724-444-5798 for more information.

For more information about the ministry, go to www.addictionrecoveryministrypittsburgh.org or check out our Facebook page, Addiction Recovery Ministry Pittsburgh.

RELIGIOUS FORMATION

Faith Sharing for the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Acceptance and rejection are blatantly experienced by Jesus in the gospel this Sunday. Jesus was very direct in his communication to the people of his “native place.” Many did not like what they heard and were intent to “hurl him over the brow of the hill.” Jesus “passed through the midst of them and went away.” No words recorded. This example of Jesus is a lesson for all. In the face of agitators, simply walk away, grateful for the protection of Our Heavenly Father. Find the reference to the daily gospels which are always listed in our church Bulletin or can be found on-line at www.usccb.org/biblereadings

Sacraments: Grow In Faith Together Parents/Guardians and children of Grade 2 meet Saturday, February 2, 5:00 p.m. (changed from February 16) or Sunday, February 17, 12:10 p.m. in Marian Hall. Children need to bring their BLESSED - First Eucharist books to the GIFT assembly.

Faith Formation families of children who attend public schools, use the Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families book pages 52-53. Do you recognize Jesus in your “native place?” Faith Formation Sessions for students who attend the local public schools: • Grade 8 students will meet for each session at the JAM

house near Middle Road. • Monday, February 4 Meet in class by 6:00 p.m. to

begin promptly on time. • Saturday, February 9 Meet in church at 10:00 a.m. • Sunday, February 10 will be the next FAMILY

PROGRAM (this is a change from February 17) All gather at the 9:00 a.m. Mass with Grade 3, Room 16 students assisting. Each student will need to bring to their class their complete packet of 8 Gospel Weeklies January 20 through March 10. Outreach Project “Baby Bottle Campaign” during this month. Bring the Baby Bottle with donations on February 10. SAVE TABS from soda or like cans. They can be put in a packet marked “CCD” and left on the last pew in the Children’s Liturgy room by our church foyer. See the story online about tabs used at SEWING HOPE.

Home with the Lord Remember Lord and welcome into your Kingdom those who have died and have gone before us marked in the sign of faith. Please remember to pray for the consolation of their loved ones.

A VOCATION VIEW Holiness is a gift of God. Open yourself to the gift. When God calls, be ready to respond: “Here I am, send Me!”

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar

In today’s gospel Jesus asked Simon to start by “going a short distance.” Later he asked Simon to “go into deeper water.” The first step toward reconciliation is usually a “short distance” which gives us the courage to further “into deeper water.” Reconciliations starts with the first short step!

ADULT BIBLE STUDY

Our new study: A catholic bible study by Fr. Mitch Pacwa, Entertaining Angels. The study provides a video and some reading material with discussion questions. Please come, we are sure you will gain much knowledge about the Angels. We will provide the material for the study. Call Dori Monahan 412-848-2428 for any questions.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The song of the angels, “Holy, Holy, Holy,” resounds from our lips at every Mass. There was a widespread belief in the first religions of the world that God stirred creation into being by a word, a song, a musical note. Music and a sense of God’s presence have always been inseparable. In the liturgy, your voice is invited into this song as the priest names the reasons for our praise. “Heaven and earth are full of your glory,” and we are not passive onlookers, but participants in this glory. Catholic prayer no longer assigns this angelic hymn to a choir, but gives it to you to sing. Even if your voice is thought to be suitable only for a wellinsulated shower stall, you are called into this song. We are born to sing—just listen to a baby testing the full range of newly discovered vocal abilities. Soon we get shushed and hushed into quiet, and given lots of messages that our voices are unwanted, and that we need to raise our hands in order to be heard. All of that is overturned in liturgy, the place where God waits to hear us come alive in the song of all creation. In heaven, everyone’s in the choir; why not start practicing now? AN ONGOING MISSION In his hometown synagogue, Jesus’ neighbors are amazed by his words. Nevertheless, they remind each other, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” Surely the people know who he is. The carpenter’s son. The young man who had learned in this very synagogue. The boy down the street. Conflict arises as Jesus begins to define himself in a new way. When he compares himself to the ancient prophets Elijah and Elisha the tensions grow. The tensions multiply when Jesus begins to tell of a new mission for God’s people: the good news of the scriptures is intended for all. In his famous passage from the First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul reminds us of the eternal nature of love. Love does not come to an end. In today’s readings, we are reminded that, like love, Jesus’ mission cannot be contained. Jesus slips through the crowd of persecutors and moves on to new challenges. We are called to this same perseverance in the name of love.
