Dear Parishioners, 1. Failure The First Reading gives us something rare in Scripture: a dialogue between God the Father and the Messiah he sent. But if you look at the verse numbers of our First Reading, you will see that Verse 4 has been omitted. The preceding Verse 3 is God’s line to the Messiah. My way of phrasing it would be, “You are my servant, and you will be a spectacular suc- cess; people will be able to see the glory of God by looking at you.” This is a powerful expression of praise and affirmation, isn’t it? But guess how the Messiah responds to God in the omitted Verse 4? In the first of his two lines in Verse 4, the Messiah says (in my way of phrasing it), “I have laboured in vain. I have used all my strength, and it has all been for nothing.” This one is a powerful expression of failure, isn’t it? You can see why someone might have thought Christ’s mission was a failure. The people passing by Christ on the cross certainly didn’t see the glory of God in him then! And by the time of his death, the work of Christ’s life had come only to this: he had a handful of disciples and a few women as hangers-on. If the goal was to bring salvation to the world, you can see that this result would look like total failure. But here is the gist of what God says in Verses 5-6, in response to the Messiah’s expression of failure in Verse 4: “You ARE glorious, in the sight of the Lord, and God is your strength. Just saving Israel is too small a success for you; you will bring salvation to all the ends of the earth.” The first communities of Christians and all the apostles were Jewish. By now there are Christian communities in every non-Jewish part of the earth, too. And so Christ’s mission to bring salvation to the Jews and the Gentiles was a glorious success, as in the First Reading God pre- dicted it would be. But all that success came only after the death of the Messiah. Our suc- cess, like our glory, needs to be through God’s strength, in God’s sight, and in God’s time. And that is why, in the second of his two lines in the omitted Verse 4, the Messiah says, “my judgment is with the Lord, and my work is with my God.” In other words, imitate the Holy Family. Get to know and to love the oth- ers in your kinfolk, whether they have grown up and left home or not. Every value-rooted family builds one more entrenchment against the ghastly degradation of this most important foundation-stone of human life. We all want to be part of the great web of love that is God’s presence on earth. It is played out in the foibles and fun of ordinary family life. God is there. 2. Introduction from Fr Greg I thought that I would take this opportunity to introduce myself and let you know where I come from. I was born in Sydney and am the son of Maggie and Kieran who now live down the South Coast. I am the eldest of three boys having two brothers Matt and Tim. I was part of a Naval family growing up so we lived all over Australia but we had a family home in Sylvania. I entered the Seminary at St Patrick's Manly in 1995 and then moved to the Seminary of the Good Shepherd at Homebush the following year. I was ordained to the diaconate at Kingsgrove Parish in 2001 and was ordained to the priest-hood in April 2002. My first appointment as a priest was to Liverpool Parish. Late 2004 I was sent on loan to Tasmania for six months where I was administrator at the Parish of Central Tas-mania. In 2005 I returned to Sydney as assistant priest at Mortlake Parish. Late 2006 I joined the Royal Australian Navy as a Chaplain and com-menced full time service in 2007. I had postings at HMAS Waterhen in Sydney, HMAS Cerberus in Victoria, The RAN Recruit School, HMAS Mel-bourne where I deployed to the middle east in 2010-11. HMAS Perth where I deployed to the Mid Pacific and HMAS Success. In 2012 I was posted to HMAS Creswell in Jervis Bay where I did a lot of work with the Royal Australian Naval College. I discharged from the RAN in 2013 and was asked to go to St Gabriel's at Bexley. I spent six months at St Gabriel’s before being appointed as Parish Priest of All Hallows Five Dock. I hope that my time here will be a time of grace, peace and blessing to all of us in this community. Please come and say hello if you see me around and I look forward to getting to know as many of you as I can. I've felt very grateful already for the support of so many people here who have made it easy to settle in and am very grateful for so much hard work I see going on. In my spare time I love sailing, fishing and cricket.

POPE FRANCIS’ COLUMN

Pope Francis: Our baptism gives us a new and glorious hope

2014-01-08 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Wednesday reflected on the great gift we received when we were baptized.

Speaking to the crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the weekly General Audience, the Pope be-gan a series of catecheses on the Sacraments, starting with Baptism. He said that the Second Vatican Council tells us that the Church herself is a “Sacrament”, a grace-filled sign which makes Christ’s saving work present in history, through the power of the Holy Spirit. And speaking of Baptism, the first of the Church’s seven Sacraments, Pope Francis said “it gives us new birth in Christ, makes us sharers in the mystery of his death and resurrection, grants the for-giveness of sin and brings us new freedom as God’s children and members of his Church”. He urged us not to forget the great gift we have received. “Our baptism has changed us, given us a new and glorious hope, and empowered us to bring God’s redeeming love to all, particularly the poor, in whom we see the face of Christ. Our baptism has also given us a share in the Church’s mission of evan-gelization; as disciples, we are also missionaries”

The Pope said “as we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of the Lord this Sunday, let us ask him to re-new in us the grace of our Baptism and to make us, with all our brothers and sisters, true children of God and living members of his body, the Church”.

And through speakers in different languages, the Pope turned to our brothers and sisters from the Middle East, and in particular from Syria, inviting them to remember the day of their Baptism and to celebrate it because thanks to this Sacrament “we have all become new creatures in Christ, temples of the Spirit, adoptive children of the Father, members of the Church, brothers in faith and announcers of the Gospel, capable of forgiving and loving all, even our enemies”

Living the Joy of the Gospel The Francis Effect

“I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and clinging to its own security.” Evangelii Gaudium 49, Pope Francis

The Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium has been described as Pope Francis’ vision for the Church. This Colloquium will explore this vision and application for the Australian Catholic Church and society. This one-day Colloquium will challenge participants to answer Pope Francis’ call to be “missionary disciples” (EG 120). The day will bring together people from across ministries of the Church for a time of formation and professional development. An occasion not to be missed for anyone who is living and leading mission and evangelisation. We invite you to come in groups or as an individual.

A copy of the newly released book The Francis Effect:

Living the Joy of the Gospel will be given to each participant.

Georg Ratzinger Celebrates his 90 Birthday in the Vatican With Benedict XVI

Catholic Communications, Sydney Archdiocese,

17 Jan 2014

January 15th marked Msgr. Georg Ratzinger 90th

birthday. He's celebrating it at the Vatican along with his younger brother, Pope emeritus Benedict XVI. The celebration will be private and will in-clude a classical music concert. Georg is the last living relative of Benedict XVI, and his closest friend. GEORG RATZINGER April 7, 2008 "His first conversation after the papal election was with Frau Heidl. I no longer went to answer the phone because it rang and rang and always there were journalists on the other end, asking the same questions a hundred times and so I left it alone and thought "Nuts to you!", as we say in Bavaria. But Frau Heidl went to answer it

and suddenly she recognized that at the other end of the line there was the Holy Father, so she was rather excited, delighted and surprised. When I finally talked to him, there was nothing different about it, our fraternal relationship has

not really changed. It was just my brother, and we spoke as we always have."

Msgr. Ratzinger lives in Ratisbon, in south eastern

Germany. He came to Rome in January and un-

derwent a medical check-up. As any brother would, Benedict XVI visited him the hospital on
