TRANSCRIPT
Dear Parishioners, 1. The Spirit of the Lord In the Gospel Reading of the Pentecost Vigil Mass, Jesus invites people to come to him to drink. The Gospel explains that Jesus was talking about the Spirit; and the Gospel comments that, as yet, there was no Spirit. But what could the Gospel mean by this? The Old Testament is full of references about the Spirit’s coming on somebody. So, for example, in Judges 15:14-15, the text says that the Spirit of the Lord rushed into Samson, and he became so strong that he killed a thousand of the enemy with nothing more than the jawbone of a donkey. It is worth seeing here, though, that the Old Testament itself distinguishes the way in which the Spirit was in the world in that Old Testament time and the way in which it was given in the time ushered in by Christ. As Joel 3:1-5 explains it, in the messianic times God pours out his Spirit into the minds and hearts of his people. And this way of putting the point is helpful. When the Spirit comes upon Samson, it seems to take him over. With the Spirit taking him over, Samson flies into a supernaturally strong fury, which ends only when hundreds of his enemies lie dead. In that battle, Samson looks as if even Tasers would have had a hard time taking him down. But in the time of Christ, when a person is baptized with the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit does not take her over. The Holy Spirit comes into her, to be with her, even while her own mind and heart continue to be her own and to operate as her own. The result of this kind of giving of the Spirit is not a superhuman, wild strength and violence. The result is the fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, and long-suffering. (The last thing anyone would think about Samson is that he was characterized by patience and long-suffering!) And so this is what the Gospel means. Before Christ, the Holy Spirit might take over a person. But in the outpouring of the Spirit at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was given to Christ’s people, to be in them and with them always, in loving peaceful union with Christ, available to anyone who will come to Christ to drink. 2. Working With Children Checks As mentioned previously every 'volunteer' must obtain a Working With Children Check ('WWCC'). We need all Youth Group members over 18 years of age, all Children Liturgy leaders and especially Extra-ordinary ministers of the Eucharist to apply for a WWCC and provide details to the parish office once obtained. We are preparing for our audit and need to have these records up to date. Please go on line to https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-working-children-check or pop into the parish office for help.

ALL HALLOWS PARISH RE-ENERGISED
This week saw the start of our Faith Enrichment Series led by Ann Kerley.
The series is a response from parishioners after
discussions took place about Plenary 2020. Many felt the need to learn more and to deepen their Faith.
The positive feedback from participants have others already signing up for the next one.
You have 3 choices during the week as all sessions
are the same, so if one time doesn’t suit you have two other choices. The small group sessions are held in
the Gathering Space of the Church with a nice cuppa and a relaxed, interactive and informal atmosphere.
Next Sessions will be on;-
Monday 17th June 11:30am Thursday 20th June 11am Saturday 22nd June 3pm
How much time can you invest in salvation?
Generation Awakening, our Parish Youth Group, led by Beatrice Lorquet attended the Grail Centre in
North Sydney last weekend. The session was on The Devil Wears Prada and insights of Rene Girard into
human desire, rivalry and resentment. All challenging concepts which our youth grappled with and were much the wiser for having attended.
Participants at the session remarked on how wonderful it was to see a Parish Youth Group in
attendance and hoped that their youth groups, who only met monthly, could engage in something similar.
It is inspiring to now see new Altar Servers in our parish coming from our public schools who attend weekly scripture classes taught by our parishioners.
Well done one and all!
BLOOD DONORS NEEDED As we celebrate our centenary this year, we are
coming together as a community and celebrating all our blessings, however we should take a moment to keep in mind those in hospital or with illnesses that

Not everyone can give blood. We have provided material on our centenary board in regards to blood
donations. If you fit the criteria please sign up

POPE’S COLUMN
Holy Father Begins Journey Through Acts of the Apostles ‘The Word of God runs, it is dynamic, it waters every terrain on which it falls.’ Having last week completed his catechesis on the “Our Father”, Pope Francis began a journey through the Acts of the Apostles at his May 29, 2019, General Audience in St. Peter’s Square. His theme: “To them, He presented Himself alive . . . and He charged them . . . to wait for the promise of the Father” (Biblical passage: From the Acts of the Apostles 1:3-4). In fact, the Holy Father referred to the Acts of the Apostles as speaking to readers of a journey – “the journey of the Gospel in the world. And Francis explained that the book “shows us the wonderful union between the Word of God and the Holy Spirit, which inaugurates the time of evangelization. “The protagonists of the Acts are in fact a vivacious and effective ‘couple’: the Word and the Spirit… The Word of God runs, it is dynamic, it waters every terrain on which it falls.” The Holy Father explained that there is a force that makes the Gospel effective. It isn’t the use of great rhetoric, good speaking. No, it is the result of the Holy Spirit, the “dynamic” of God. “For example, in the Bible, there are stories, human words, but what is the difference between the Bible and a history book?,” the Pope asked. His answer: ” The difference is that the words of the Bible are taken from the Holy Spirit who gives a very great force, a different force, and who helps us so that that word is seed of sanctity, seed of life, effective. “And we’ll see this, in the course of these catechesis, in the Book of the Acts of the Apostles. He who gives vibrant and incisive sonority to our very fragile human word, capable even of lying and escaping from one’s responsibilities, is solely the Holy Spirit, through whom the Son of God was generated; the Spirit that anointed and sustained Him in the mission; the Spirit thanks to whom He chose His Apostles and guaranteed to them proclamation, perseverance, and fruitfulness, as He also guarantees it today to our proclamation.” Pope Francis recalled that the Gospel ends with the resurrection, from which point the Acts of the Apostles take up the story. Written by Luke, the Acts share the “proofs” of the Risen Jesus that demonstrate that his resurrection was real. Jesus invited the apostles to be confident in waiting for their baptism with the Holy Spirit. “Baptism in the Holy Spirit is, in fact, the experience that enables us to enter into a personal c ommunion with God and to participate in His universal salvific Will, acquiring the gift of the parrhesia, the courage, namely, the capacity to pronounce a word ‘as children of God,’ not only as men, but as children of God: a limpid, free, effective word full of love for Christ and for brothers,” Francis said. “Therefore, there is no struggle to earn or merit God’s gift. All is given gratuitously and in its time. The Lord gives all gratuitously. Salvation isn’t purchased, it’s not paid for: it’s a free gift.”
