1-2-3 Magic® & Emotion Coaching Engaging Adolescents™

A comprehensive one-day training course that provides skills to teach parents and carers of teenagers’ how to resolve their behaviour problems.

1-2-3 Magic® & Emotion Coaching is based on two underlying perspectives on parenting: first, that children can be taught to respond with more flexibility when they are frustrated or upset and second, that parents and carers can be taught easy-to-use skills they can use at particular parenting moments.

Participants will learn:• Sorting behaviours: what’s involved and the

implications for how parents will respond• Common mistakes in addressing misbehaviour,

particularly the problem with too much talk and too much emotion

• Processes of pattern-establishment and change: how negative reinforcement works, the characteristics of patterns, how to interrupt patterns and extinction bursts

• Using 1-2-3 Magic: what it’s used for and what it’s not used for, how it’s done properly, how to implement it at home and how to avoid the two big mistakes of parenting

• Developing response flexibility in children: emotion coaching and cognitive strategies teachers can teach children

This workshop provides easy-to-use techniques to teach parents and carers that they can use to enlist adolescents to manage their own behaviour and emotional reactions. The course creatorMichael Hawton, MAPSPsychologist and teacher, Michael Hawton, has spent nearly 30 years working with families and children, many of whom have been involved in the child protection system. Michael is a highly-experienced report writer in The Family Court of Australia and The NSW Children’s Court Clinic. He is an experienced assessor of parenting capacity and in the assessment of risk in child welfare matters. Michael is also an experienced trainer who provides PD that is practical and method-based. Michael and his highly skilled team have helped more than 12,500 professionals and over 110,000 thousand families around Australia.
