70% of them had excessive absences or tardies Only 14% of students who had one D or F were
classified as having attendance problems

Poor attendance consequences Saturday School: 5 truancies/10 tardies Revoked dance privileges: 20 tardies/15 truancies Revoked parking pass: 25 tardies/20 truancies Revoked off campus pass: 11 tardies/10 truancies (a

A truancy is an unexcused absence to one period, i.e. if a student is unexcused for a full day and they have six
periods, they will have six truancies in that one day.

Using a planner: Every student issued planner at year start Writing down homework is essential Sit down with your student and insure they are writing
in their planner daily and up to date with assignments Emphasize the importance of staying organized in
both school and life

Parents and Schools Working TogetherCommunication
Communication not just with your school, but with your student Sit and talk with your student “I don’t have any” Stress the importance of school, attending, and
completing work. Lead by example. As noted in the pyramid, the student should be your
first contact regarding grades, or any concerns. If there is an issue, encourage them to go to their teacher to talk about it.
Parents and Schools Working TogetherCommunication
After student has initiated conversation First school contact should be the teacher
Failing grades Checking in on assignments, tests Concerns about instruction, class
Contact the teacher by phone or email Teacher contact info available on website and by
calling school
After contacting the teacher, the counselors and administrators may get involved to further support the student to succeed.
If you have attendance questions, contact attendance.
Parents and Schools Working TogetherCommunication
Weekly progress reports The last day of the week in the Counselor’s Office Grades, Missing Assignments, Test Scores,
Attendance Signed by every teacher
Usually helps to have an attached positive consequence or discipline associated with filling out the progress report since it is STUDENT’S responsibility to remember to pick one up!
