8 PARENT ORIENTATION

DIGITAL CAMPUS / BYOD INNOVATIONMobile computing is a central part of the student experience at Oklahoma Christian University, long recognized as an innovative leader in higher education technology.

OC’s mobile computing program was recognized as an Apple Distinguished Program for leadership and excellence in the integration of Apple technologies into the curriculum throughout the university. Students and faculty can easily collaborate, and employees have instant access to information and resources.

OC continues to be on the leading edge of technology with our “Bring Your Own Device” (“BYOD”) approach to mobile computing.

BRING YOUR OWN DEVICEWhat is “Bring Your Own Device” all about? BYOD allows students to bring their personally-owned mobile devices – like laptops, tablets, and smartphones – and use them to access privileged university information and applications.

BYOD expands OC’s commitment to mobile computing while providing students with more choice and flexibility than a one-size-fits-all program. It enhances our commitment to affordability, allowing students and their families to further shape their college costs based on their budgets and needs.

Though the BYOD approach is innovative in higher education, it is not a new trend in the business world. As part of the “Consumerization of IT,” employees at many organizations now use their own smartphones, tablets, and laptops to work at the office or from home.A wide range of recommended systems can be found at the following website:www.oc.edu/services/it/digital-campus/recommended-systems

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SERVICESOklahoma Christian’s mobile computing program provides several unique technological options that enhance the university’s mobile learning goals and allow us to better meet the educational needs of the students.

FLEXIBILITYWhether you’re an Apple fanatic or a die-hard Windows user, OC’s mobile computing program caters to your needs. We support both Apple’s Mac OS X and Microsoft’s Windows operating systems. The flexibility to utilize your preferred operating system enables you to focus on preparing to enter the business landscape of tomorrow.

CONNECTIVITYOklahoma Christian was among the first universities to offer students the benefits of a wireless campus, and our Wi-Fi Certified™ wireless network has continued to grow with the increased demand of mobile devices and applications, including video streaming technologies like iTunes, YouTube, and Netflix. With more than 275 wireless access points and growing, Oklahoma Christian is continuing to adapt to the bandwidth needs of a truly wireless campus.

FUNCTIONALITYOklahoma Christian’s mobile computing program provides students with free access to many software titles, including Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office. Additional titles are available at a significantly reduced cost. OC manages more than 75 software titles for student access from vendors like Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, Autodesk, IBM, and many more.

9TAKE FLIGHT

PRINTINGWe have more than 100 laser printers located throughout the campus, including all academic buildings and housing areas. Color laser printing and copy systems are also available in the Beam Library.

SUPPORTThe Office of Information Technology’s Support Central team provides support services for the mobile computing program. On-site certified hardware repair is available for some models. Our technology staff is also familiar with the software used on campus, and can assist students with software-installation questions and other common software problems. Most software-related questions can be addressed quickly, while hardware repairs are usually completed within three business days.

Loaner laptops for students taking exams may be available while their machines are in for hardware repair. The library lab has computers for use as well.

OTHER TECHNOLOGY SERVICESCABLE TV SERVICESThrough an agreement with Cox Communications, basic cable television services are available in the campus residence halls and apartments. Students may also contract directly with Cox for advanced TV services. Cox Advanced Services are paid by students directly to Cox.

PHONE SERVICEThe university does not provide phone service to campus residence rooms. There are phones available in the residence hall lobbies and some of the study rooms throughout the housing areas.

PARENT ACCESS TO STUDENT RECORDSThe Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) limits the information that the university can share without student consent. Students can grant electronic access to a parent or guardian through our online parent access site.

EMERGENCY NOTIFICATIONOklahoma Christian employs an emergency notification system to communicate with the campus during emergencies. This system will send messages via email, text (SMS), Facebook and Twitter. Students are encouraged to ensure that their contact information is current in this system.

Students have the opportunity to explore majors and meet professors. By the end of orientation, they’ll have their first college schedule and some new friends!

EARN YOUR WINGSAfter students have enjoyed “Take Flight,” they will be ready to attend “Earn Your Wings.” Upperclassmen have prepared a week packed full of fun activities that will help new students meet fellow students and learn the history and spirit of Oklahoma Christian. These activities include inspirational speakers, small discussion groups, and great entertainment. This event has a great reputation for getting students started on a successful college experience.
