DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN HIGH SCHOOL VS. COLLEGEThe following chart is based on Helping Your First-Year College Student Succeed: A Guide for Parents, by Richard Mullendore and Cathie Hatch, in conjunction with the National Orientation Directors Association (NODA).

HIGH SCHOOL COLLEGE

Parents are expected to monitor their children’s academic progress: check homework, attend parent-teacher conferences, enforce study time, and provide tutoring in problem areas.

Parents leave academic advising to advisement deans and faculty advisors. Instead of mediating between the faculty/advisors and their students, they remind students of university resources and ask appropriate questions (e.g., Have you seen your advisement dean this semester?). They check with advisement dean if they suspect their student is not attending classes or falling behind the work.

Parents expect their children to get As and Bs; to get those grades, little study time is sometimes needed.

Parents expect their students to eagerly participate in learning. Grades are secondary: a well-earned C is not a problem if the student learned a lot.

Parents motivate their students to achieve (e.g., help select schools, programs, tutors, and activities). They sometimes need to enforce their children’s participation in activities since children lack in self-regulation.

Student self-motivation is crucial for academic and personal growth. Parents ask guiding questions: What academic major/field excites you? At which academic area are you good? Have you consulted your advisement dean and attended The Career Center workshops to learn about your strengths and what jobs are available in this field?

Parents limit their children’s freedom through curfews, allowances, and limiting involvement to ‘acceptable’ peer groups. They intervene in crises.

Students have much more freedom and must accept responsibility for their own decisions and actions. Parents encourage students to first try solving problems on their own (e.g., Have you discussed this issue with your roommate? Have you reported this problem to your RA and RD?). If situation worsens or emergency arises, parents call Parent and Family Programs Office or Public Safety.

Parents are knowledgeable of and sometimes involved in structuring and organizing their children’s day.

Students must organize their time and study on their own. Distractions abound. Parents remind their students of time management and study skill workshops given by the Center for University Advisement.

Parents influence their children’s value judgments. Students need to make decisions on their own in a new environment. Parents communicate their values to their students and express trust that students will act appropriately. Parents leave communication channels open by actively, non-judgmentally and patiently listening to their students.

ADVISING RESOURCES AT HOFSTRAIF YOU ARE NOT SURE WHICH SCHOOL YOUR STUDENT HAS BEEN ACCEPTED TO, [HOFSTRA COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES (HCLAS), HONORS COLLEGE (HUHC) or SCHOOL OF UNIVERSITY STUDIES (SUS)], PLEASE REMAIN IN THIS SESSION.

Center for University Advisement101 Memorial Hall or 107 Mack Student Center516-463-6770 or 516-463-7222Appointments: Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., ; Monday and Thursday 5-7 p.m.Drop-in hours: Monday-Friday, 8-9 a.m. and 3:30-4:30 p.m.

All Hofstra students will be assigned an advisement dean from the Center for University Advisement to serve as their general academic advisor from admission through graduation. Students may request another dean if s/he does not connect to her assigned advisement dean. Once students have declared a major, they will also be assigned a faculty advisor to help with major course selection, questions and concerns. Advisement deans and faculty advisors will collaborate regarding student degree progress.

Center for University Advisement Mission Statement We support and guide Hofstra undergraduate students as they explore, identify and achieve academic goals while fostering their autonomy, responsibility and love of learning. Through an individualized approach, the Center for University Advisement teaches students how to use campus resources in order to promote their academic endeavors and personal growth. We also serve as an advocate and liaison with other offices to create a collaborative and supportive environment for all students.

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)• First point of contact is always with student • But encourage your student to complete FERPA waiver — useful in emergencies • When FERPA on file, still urge students to manage their academic and financial issues — great learning experience

What Kind of Issues Can Advisement Deans Help Address? • Academic program planning• Major exploration• Interpretation of Hofstra academic policies and procedures• Degree progress (DAR)• Other non-major specific academic questions and concerns (i.e., University and Distribution requirements)• Applicability of transfer credit• Campus resources

Dual Advisement SystemStarting with student’s major declaration (usually sophomore year):• Advisement dean continues general advising• Student assigned a faculty advisor in the department of his/her major• Important to keep regularly meeting with advisement dean to stay on track to graduation: University and distribution requirements

COLLEGE IS NOT THE 13TH GRADEEllen T. FrisinaAssociate Professor of Journalism, Media Studies, Public Relations326 Dempster Hall/[email protected] a Hofstra professor, alumna and parent, Ellen T. Frisina discusses how you can help your child succeed in college.

MOVING INTO THE RESIDENCE HALLS Residential Programs244 Mack Student Center • 516-463-6930 • [email protected] • hofstra.edu/reslifeThe move-in day for first-year students is Thursday, August 30, 2012. In the residence hall room, students are furnished with a bed (that you can loft for storage underneath), a dresser, a closet or a wardrobe, a desk and a chair.

Suggestions on what to bring:• Sheets (extra-long), blankets, pillows• Towels• Alarm clock• Hangers• Laptop/computer (not mandatory — we have labs)• Surge protectors• Small rug • Toiletries and cleaning supplies for bathroom (if your student is in a suite)• Coaxial cable for TV (ethernet cable for computer is provided)

Students CANNOT bring (because of the fire hazard):• Cooking appliances (e.g., toasters, microwaves)• Extension cords (surge protectors are fine)• Halogen lamps• Candles• Curtains• Pets (except fish in a 10-gallon-or-less tank)• Cinder blocks (use plastic stackers for lofting)

A good idea is for your student to talk with his/her roommate(s) about bringing a refrigerator (limit is one per room). The refrigerator must be an energy-efficient model not exceeding five (5) cubic feet in size. You may rent a refrigerator or a refrigerator/microwave unit through the university-recommended vendor. Please note that the combination refrigerator/microwave units may not be purchased on your own, only refrigerators.

REFRIGERATOR RENTALMicroFridge® is the original 3-in-1 refrigerator/freezer/microwave combination appliance. It has a 0-9 degree real freezer and a state-of-the-art touchpad microwave, all in an Energy Star-rated package that substantially reduces the amount of electricity required to operate the unit. This is the only university-approved microwave permitted in the residence halls. For electrical wiring concerns, only ONE microwave combination appliance is permitted per bedroom. Students may rent the complete 3-in-1 combination appliance or just the freezer/refrigerator unit without the microwave. To order a unit from the University-approved vendor, parents may call the toll-free number, 1-800-262-0101, or visit www.universityelectronics.com.

Residential students pay a flat $40 laundry fee in the beginning of each semester so there is no need to add money to Dutch Debits for that purpose. A $300 housing deposit is due at the beginning of March each year (mailings are sent home). Hofstra must receive the deposit in order for your students to participate in the housing selection process for the subsequent year.

The Students We Serve • SSD has more than 500 students registered, with a wide variety of physical, sensory, psychological and learning disabilities.• Approximately 65 percent of registered students have learning disabilities, ADHD or both.• Ten percent of our registered students have mobility impairments, a much higher percentage than typical.

What We Do • Consultants for the campus community on ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) compliance and disability-related issues• Collect, review and maintain confidential disability-related records on all registered students.• Determine eligibility for services and a variety of accommodations designed to mitigate the effect of a disability on a student’s educational experience.

Most Frequent Accommodations • Testing accommodations• Alternative print materials• Note-taking services• Residential accommodations• Use of assistive technology (computers, calculators, voice activated software, “smart pens”, etc.)

What Guides SSD Policy? • Our policies, procedures and services are guided by the ADA of 1990, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and industry standards. • Neither Section 504 nor the ADA are special education laws. Rather, they are non-discrimination laws. • Reasonable accommodations are determined by necessity and feasibility, not preference.• Reasonable accommodations guarantee access, not success. What Guides SSD Policy (continued)• An existing, high-school IEP (Individual Education Plan) does not determine accommodations at the college level.• Common sense

What is PALS? PALS (Program for Academic Learning Skills) is a fee-based, optional program for students with documented learning disabilities and/or ADHD. Students work one-on-one with a learning specialist on learning strategies designed to make them more effective and independent learners.

Academic Coaching • Fee-based, short-term intervention support• Goal-based• Can work on academic skills, time management, executive function, college adjustment, and other similar areas of weakness• For students not eligible for PALS

Next Steps • If your student hasn’t already done so, encourage him/her to fill out a Disability Disclosure Form (available in our office, on our Web page, and in your student’s orientation packet).• Next, fill out an Application for Services.• Gather your professional documentation to be provided to SSD when requested.

Next Steps (continued)• The student should make contact with our office as soon as possible to ensure that his/her file is complete, and arrange a meeting date and time for an orientation with one of our staff.• If your student needs non-classroom related accommodations, such as a housing accommodation, please contact us; the earlier, the better.

Self-Advocacy • Make sure that your student understands that he or she must make contact with us to request accommodations. We cannot initiate the process.• Be sure that before he or she arrives for fall semester, your student understands the scope and nature of the disability, its effects, and what accommodations may be needed.

WHAT KIND OF COMPUTER SHOULD I PURCHASE FOR MY SON OR DAUGHTER?Mac vs. Windows?• Currently there are no specific hardware requirements by school or major.• We find an even mix of Mac and Windows across most majors.• We do recommend that you consider your son’s or daughter’s level of comfort with computers. Learning to use a new operating system can add to first-year pressures.

Notes for Mac users: • Microsoft Access (database application) is not available for Mac. • Intel-based Macs can run Windows, but this requires the purchase of a separate Windows software license.

Laptop vs. Desktop• Hofstra recommends laptops over desktop computers for the following reasons: • Small and portable • Study anywhere on campus • Easy to bring to our Repair Center, Technical Support Center, or Learning Support Center, if needed • Easily taken to class • Take advantage of campus-wide Wi-Fi

What are Hofstra’s recommended computer specifications?• Recommendations for new Windows computers: • Operating system — Windows 7 Home Premium or better • Processor — Dual Core Intel i5 Processor or better • RAM — 4GB minimum • Hard drive — 500GB or larger • Antivirus software — McAfee, Norton, Microsoft Security Essentials or avast

• Recommendations for new Mac computers: • Operating system — OS X 10.6 Lion or better • Processor — Dual Core Intel i5 Processor or better • RAM — 4GB minimum • Hard drive — 500GB or larger • Antivirus software — McAfee, Norton or Sophos

Should we purchase a printer? • There is no need to purchase a printer; Hofstra provides printing services through PridePrint• PridePrint allows students to print from their laptop ANYWHERE on campus and then release their print jobs at any PridePrint release station for up to 12 hours.• There are currently 29 PridePrint release stations in 14 different buildings.• We plan to install nine (9) additional PridePrint release stations this summer.• PridePrint is Mac and Windows compatible.• Students are provided with 120 free print credits each academic year.• Credits are refreshed at the beginning of the fall semester.• .10 credits per black and white page; same cost for single or double-sided.• 1.00 credits per color page; same cost for single or double-sided.

Anything else?• Hofstra provides students with a free copy of Microsoft Office Professional. • Version 2010 for Windows • Version 2011 for Mac • Download this and other software from the Hofstra portal under “my apps.” • Students are provided with two download attempts per version. These applications are quite large so be sure you have a fast and reliable connection before attempting to download this software.

• If you plan to purchase a computer lock, we recommend a model with a key, not a combination. We also recommend that you keep one key at home.• Simple security tips: • Don’t leave a laptop unattended in any public location (in or out of a bag). • Close and lock your door when you’re out of the room.
