WELCOME TO GREEN ACRES Challenge, pride, success and fun is our goal for every child who joins the Green Acres camp family. We are thrilled with the dynamic programs we offer and the quality of our leadership. It continues to be a privilege and joy to create summer camp programs which sow the seeds of a lifetime of skills, rewards and friendships.

The Green Acres Parent Handbook communicates our commitment to great leadership, dynamic staff and outstanding programs. Green Acres is a "kids’ community" where the focus is on spirited camp fun! It is also a place where children can enhance social skills and build character traits - self-esteem, courage, respect for others and cooperation - as they move from childhood to their teenage years. We help build stronger, more caring, more competent and more self-assured children together with all the fun and laughter everyone expects from summer camp.

Welcome to Green Acres. We wish your child a memorable summer!

WE’RE HERE WHEN YOU NEED US We are a hard working, spirited team dedicated to making Green Acres your child’s second home and summer family!

CAMP DIRECTORS: EDDY BOGOMOLNY, LORI BOGOMOLNY, DARREN GREENSPOON Camp Directors have two important jobs to do.

First they set in operation all the logistics required to coordinate, for one summer, several hundred boys & girls, counsellors, nurses, specialty staff and maintenance staff. From making a speech, to signing a contract, to interviewing prospective staff, to making out a giant arts & crafts order, to planning a building project, a Camp Director has to be very good at a little bit of everything. And then there is the second job, which is even more important.

It involves trying to fulfill the human emotional needs of every child who comes to camp. It’s spotting a troubled camper in a crowd as quickly and effectively as a forest ranger spots a still smoldering campfire. It’s preparing a group to meet and help a camper who has a few problems getting along, and then making sure the problems get solved. But mostly, it’s just making sure every youngster has a happy rewarding time at Green Acres.

We respect Eddy, Lori and Darren because they do their first job so well. We love them because they are amazing at their second job.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR: KATHY FLEMING With over 15 years experience at Camp Green Acres, Kathy brings her creativity, leadership and knowledge to nearly every aspect of camp. Kathy makes sure that everything is running smoothly everyday whether she is motivating staff, overseeing programming or being a resource to parents and head staff. Feel free to contact her with any questions or concerns.

LOGISTICS & OPERATIONS: PHIL FAIBISH Phil has been in the camping industry for over two decades, having held numerous supervisory roles, including Director for the past 10 years at a Toronto-area day camp. He recently joined Green Acres in 2019 and is looking forward to meeting all of the wonderful Green Acres campers, staff and parents! Phil has a contagious energy, creative spirit and approachable nature and is well-known in the community for his commitment to providing campers with an unforgettable summer experience.

CAMP ADMINISTRATOR: SANDY GRIFFITHS With over 30 years at Camp Green Acres, Sandy, our Head Administrator, works hard at coordinating the smooth running of a busy day in the camp office. Call her if you need any help with registration, or for information about your camp account. Sandy can solve just about anything! Don’t be shy to put her to the test!

CAMP ADMINISTRATOR: ROWAN WEISBACH Rowan has been part of the Green Acres family for over 10 years. She started out as a counselor, then Head Staff and now has been part of our administration and registrar team in the office for many years. Along with Sandy, she is always there to help you with any registration or enrollment questions you may have.

WHAT MAKES GREEN ACRES DIFFERENT:

Aside from our incredible facilities, our amazing variety of activities, our swim instruction program and our efficient bussing routes, our dedication to your children is what makes the difference. Our team of Directors, office staff, head staff and counsellors are there to make sure that your child’s Green Acres’ experience is second to none. We are very accommodating and flexible to your family’s needs and requests and go the extra mile to make sure that every child feels at home at Camp Green Acres.

SOME OF THE BEST CAMPER-STAFF RATIOS Your children are in good hands!! For campers in grade 1 and younger, every cabin of approximately 12 children has 3 cabin counsellors - with at least one counsellor of university age! Campers grade 2 and older have 2 cabin counsellors! In addition, almost every sport and activity at camp is led by one or two specialists/instructors. Since counsellors also go to the activities that makes the supervision even better!!!

GREEN ACRES TOWEL SERVICE Daily Towel Service is included for all campers at no extra charge. Campers will be receiving a fresh towel for each swim. No need to load up your child’s backpack with heavy wet towels!

KIDS KITCHEN LUNCH PROGRAM Kids Kitchen has been our hot lunch provider for over 10 years. Our parents wanted more flexibility and we listened. Enjoy a wide variety of main dishes, side dishes and treats from our updated a la carte menu. Order as much or as little as you want. Order as often as you want - one day, once a week, or everyday! It’s up to you! Kosher style, vegetarian and gluten free options available. You will receive an email from Kids Kitchen to activate your account!

INTRODUCTORY E-MAIL FROM YOUR COUNSELLORS Rather than playing telephone tag with your child’s counsellor, you will be receiving an introductory email from them with tons of information that you need to know prior to the first day of camp. You will also receive a list of campers in the cabin (first names only) at this time. Attached to the email will be an “About My Camper” form that you can fill out with any important information about your son/daughter that you would like the counsellors to receive.

THE STOCK BUS TRACKER Stock Bus Tracker allows you to view your camper’s current bus location and information about the route in real time. Simply fill out your bus information on the tracker. You will receive this information a few days prior to the start of your child’s first day.

COMMUNICATION FROM SWIM Within the first few days of your child’s session you will receive a confirmation of their swim level. Midway through their session you receive an online progress report and then a final report at then end of their camp stay. Should your child pass a swim level, you get an automatic email update with the good news! It’s easy to get in touch with our Swim Director - call or email and she will get back to you!

TOONIE TUESDAY! Building good character is an important part of Camp Green Acres. We have been proud supporters of the SickKids Campership Program for many years and continue to do so. We want to help our campers understand the importance of giving back to the community. Therefore, every Tuesday, we encourage you to send your child with a toonie or other spare change which we will donate to the Ronald McDonald House on your behalf. Every unit will choose to fundraise in their own fun and special way.

SAFE CAMP POLICY In every aspect of camp, Green Acres makes safety a top priority. Systems are put into place to provide the utmost safety on the bus, in the pool and in the sun. We also aim to create an environment where both campers and staff feel safe, confident and excited to come to camp everyday.

With that in mind, Green Acres Day Camp will have zero tolerance for aggressive behavior of any kind. If a camper engages in a physical and/or verbal action that has intent to harm or has caused harm to another individual, the Camp will follow these steps outlined below:

1. The family will be contacted to discuss the incident. With the help of our Head Staff, Camper Relations Team and Directors, a positive behaviour plan will be put into place to support pro-social behaviours. Depending on the nature of the incident, you may be required to pick your child up from Camp.

2. Should a second incident occur, you will be called and asked to pick up your child at that time. Your child may be suspended from attending Green Acres for 1-2 days depending on the nature of the incident. This time allows the camper to self-reflect and for the team to devise a plan for success. A behaviour plan will be e-mailed to the parents and reviewed with the parents and child upon their return to Camp.

3. Should the behaviours continue, you may be asked to provide extra support for your child at Camp through our Leisure Buddy Program, if we have one available, or asked to terminate your child’s time at Camp. In the case of camper termination, a refund for the remaining days would be issued.

Depending on the severity of the incident, steps 1 & 2 may be skipped at the Directors’ discretion.

Again, the goal is to ensure that every camper feels safe and secure in their cabin group at Camp Green Acres. While we endeavor to help every child succeed at Camp and to work with campers and families exhibiting negative behaviours, we must keep the safety of all our campers in mind.

HOW WE KEEP IN TOUCH WITH PARENTS 1. INTRODUCTIONS FROM OUR STAFF: Prior to the start of camp you will be receiving an introductory e-mail from your child’s unit head. About a week before your child’s first day, you will be getting an e-mail from your child’s counsellors introducing themselves. This will include: • Counsellor’s names • Important information to help get your child ready for their first day at Green Acres • Your child’s cabin number • Cabin list (first names only) • An “About My Camper” form - to pass on information about your child directly to the

counsellors • Your child’s bus name and bus captain • A confirmation of your child’s swim level will be sent to you after the first couple of days of camp (Please note that this email will be in lieu of introductory phone calls - you will still have the opportunity to meet the staff in person at our June Meet & Greet and on Family Night)

Although we do our best to try to keep counsellors with their campers throughout the summer, there are situations (i.e. not all staff are hired for the full summer) when staff switches occur. If a senior counsellor is new to the cabin, parents will be informed. 2. MEET AND GREET - COUNSELLORS AND BUS CAPTAINS: Wednesday, June 26th from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. for campers starting July 1st. Bring your children to meet their counsellors and look around the camp. For campers starting at any other time throughout the summer, we invite you to come up on this day to look around the camp. 5:00 - 6:00 pm Meet the Counsellors 6:00 - 6:30 pm Meet the Bus Captains

3. FOLLOW UP: At the end of your child’s first week of camp, you will receive a Camper Update filled out by your child’s counsellor. This is meant as a quick overview of how your child is enjoying his/her camp experience so far. This will be done for campers in Chipmunks, Beavers, Buffaloes, Bears and Raptors who are enrolled for a minimum two week session. Please feel free to call the Camp or e-mail your Unit Head for a more timely update.

4. FAMILY NIGHT AND PARENT MEET & GREET

Family Night is an opportunity for campers to show family around "their" camp, to visit the different specialty areas and facilities at camp and to meet the counsellors, instructors, speak to the swim staff and experience our famous spirit rallies.

It is also a great opportunity for campers starting on July 29th to come and meet their child’s counsellors.

NOTE: Pets are not allowed on the campgrounds. Also, there is no smoking anywhere on camp property.

Family Night: Thursday, July 25th, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

PIZZA DINNER, DRINKS AND SNACKS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE UNTIL 7:30 P.M. AT THIS EVENT.

5. NOTICES AND LETTERS Paper notices can often get lost or arrive home wet in campers’ knapsacks. Therefore, during the summer months all memos, letters, permission forms and other communications will be emailed to you. Please check your e-mail settings to ensure that our e-mails do not automatically go to your junk mail. If you would like to add an additional e-mail address to our mailings, please e-mail [email protected]

6. TEXT MESSAGES The camp will send a text message to parents whose child(ren) travel on the bus when the camp has learned of a significant delay on route.

HOW WE TEACH SWIMMING AT CAMP ALL TRADITIONAL CAMP CAMPERS, CAMPERS IN ALL-STAR, SPECIALTY CAMPS & CEDAR CREEK (WHO SELECTED OPTIONAL INSTRUCTIONAL SWIM ONLY) Safety at swim is our utmost priority! This is why we hire only hand-picked certified swim instructors, provide extensive training of our own and go above and beyond public health lifeguard standards! Green Acres provides high quality swim instruction in a safe and fun environment.

Using the LIFESAVING SOCIETY swim program we emphasize a step by step progression approach in learning to swim. This means that campers progress at their own individual pace, without peer pressure, making swim instruction an enjoyable experience. A wide variety of teaching aids are used extensively – flutter boards, swim bars, hoops, life jackets, diving rings, etc.

We also offer the Lifesaving Patrol program, Bronze Star and Bronze Medallion for more advanced swimmers.

RECREATIONAL SWIM Each day all our campers are offered a recreational swim period either at our waterslides or at one of our pools. For safety, campers wishing to swim in the deep end of the pool will be asked to pass a deep-end swim test. Only those children who have passed the test, will be given a deep-end bracelet and will be allowed to swim in the deep-end during recreational swim. Testing will be done throughout the summer.

OUR SWIM FACILITIES Our swim facilities consist of two large, magnificent and heated swimming pools especially designed to facilitate a swim instruction program. In addition, we have our own heated junior waterslide park for fun times by all ages, regardless of their swim abilities!

MID-TERM SWIM REPORT (MUST BE REGISTERED FOR A MINIMUM OF 4 WEEKS) A link will be emailed at the halfway point of your child’s stay at camp to an online mid-term swim report indicating how your child is progressing in his/her instructional swim lessons. Please visit the swim instructors during our family night for a more detailed, personal update. A final online swim report will be sent via email on your child’s last day of camp.

WHEN YOUR CHILD(REN) PASS THEIR SWIM LEVEL Campers are taught at their own individual pace and testing is done throughout the summer. When/if your child successfully completes the requirements of their level, you will receive an e-mail notifying you of their accomplishment and they will automatically be placed in the next swim level.

ALL ABOUT BUSSING For any bussing questions please call the camp bussing office at 905-887-1400 or e-mail [email protected].

To provide our camp families with the most choices, we offer three different transportation options: Door-to-Door Bus Service, Neighbourhood Point-to-Point Service or Car Pool (Own Transportation).

GENERAL BUS INFO • All buses are identified by animal names (e.g. Zebra Bus, Blue Jay Bus, etc…). • Expect some delays the first couple days of each session. • In the afternoon the buses leave camp at approximately 3:55 p.m., please ensure someone is

waiting for your camper(s) at the drop-off location. • Camper bus names and routes may change from one session to the next. We will notify you of

any changes. • Bus mail envelopes will be provided to you on the first day. Use them to send messages to the

camp office, nurse or Unit Heads. • Every bus is staffed with a Green Acres Bus Captain and Bus Crew to ensure that your child has

a safe and fun ride to and from camp. Please note, for your child’s safety, our staff have been instructed NOT to accept any verbal instructions regarding transportation changes. Any non-urgent changes should be sent in writing by e-mail to [email protected] or bus mail. For immediate or urgent changes please call the camp office 905-887-1400.

• Bus Captains on Point-to-Point buses are required to check Photo IDs prior to releasing your child at pick up time EACH AND EVERY DAY. Your co-operation is much appreciated. You may also take a photograph of your driver’s license on your smartphone for easy reference.

TEXT MESSAGES The camp will send a text message to parents whose child(ren) travel on a camp bus when the camp has learned of a significant delay enroute. Although we do our best to create the fastest and most efficient routes, we CANNOT control traffic and construction. We ask for your patience.

NOTE: When absent on a door-to-door bus call: Stock Transportation at 905-883-6665 and email the camp office at [email protected] before 7:45 a.m. to notify the bus that your camper(s) will be missing a day of camp.

SAFETY • Please make sure campers are not sitting on the curb while waiting for their bus. • Upon arriving at camp, campers will be walked by a staff member to their appropriate rec hall

or sports area. • Eating & chewing gum is not allowed on the bus. • Juice or pop are not allowed on the bus as they attract bugs and wasps. • Only water is allowed on the bus. • Green Acres staff will be waiting for your child to arrive at camp. They will help them off the

bus and walk them straight to their rec hall or area of camp.

MISSED THE BUS?: If you are driving up to camp because you have missed the bus or had an

appointment, you must park your vehicle and check your child in at the camp office.

BUS STAFF • Bus Captains are in charge of the organization, safety, activities and cheers on the bus. They

are there to ensure that the bus ride is safe and fun. • Bus Captains are not permitted to take verbal messages, please use bus mail, email or call the

camp office. • Bus Drivers are responsible for driving the bus safely. • WE WANT YOUR FEEDBACK! E-mail us at [email protected] with any

comments regarding your bus staff and/or bus drivers!

• Bus Captains are required to check Photo ID daily prior to releasing campers at all point-to-point stops.

DOOR-TO-DOOR BUSSING • These routes use small buses with seatbelts. • A lawn sign will be placed prior to the start of your campers'(s) session. • Bus pick-up will occur between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. depending on your place in the bus

route. • The camp office will e-mail you with approximate times for pick up and drop off prior to your

camper’s first day of camp. • If your child is going to be absent please call Stock Transportation at 905-883-6665 and email

the camp office at [email protected] before 7:45 a.m.

Meet your bus captains on Wednesday June 26th from 6:00 - 6:30 (Meet the Counsellors from 5:00 - 6:00)

POINT-TO-POINT BUSSING • These routes use big buses. • The camp office will e-mail you with approximate times for pick up and drop off prior to your

camper’s first day of camp. • PLEASE be at the bus stop 5-10 minutes prior to the scheduled time to minimize delays. • Busses will depart promptly

It is our policy that attendance in the morning is confirmed only once the camper actually boards the bus. You can help the attendance process go faster, by lining up the campers so that they are ready to board the bus as soon as it arrives at the point-to-point location.

In the afternoon, Photo IDs must be checked daily for safety reasons. The bus captain will empty the bus according to the order in which campers are seated. Therefore, campers sitting at the front of the bus will come off first and campers in the back last. When a camper gets to the door the parent should approach the bus captain with their Photo ID and take their camper away from the door so that the process can move quickly. Photo ID is checked DAILY even once the Parent or Guardian becomes familiar to the bus captain. You may also take a photograph of your driver’s license on your smartphone for easy reference. OWN TRANSPORTATION • Morning arrival is between 9:00 to 9:20 a.m. • You will be directed to the “Kiss 'N Go” loop.

Save the date!

• As of 9:00 am each morning, staff will be posted at the “Kiss ‘N Go” loop to help escort your child out of the car with his/her bags. We ask that you do not get out of your vehicle.

• Safety is a priority!!! In the event that there is a line up of cars, please be patient and do not pass anyone on the inside.

• If your child needs a little extra “mommy/daddy time”, or if you need to speak to someone or go to the camp office, please park your car next to the “Kiss ‘N Go” loop

• Upon arrival at camp, campers will be walked by a staff member to their appropriate rec hall or sports area. Parents may not walk their child(ren) to their unit.

• Cedar Creek Campers must be dropped off at Cedar Creek, 10997 Kennedy Rd. • Afternoon pick up is between 4:00 to 4:10 p.m. inside the front gate. Campers

cannot be picked up from their rec hall or sports area. Cedar Creek campers will be waiting at the main camp site.

• Photo Identification is required to sign out your camper each day.

TIP: Do not arrive early to pick up your child as they remain in their units until all the busses have left camp at 3:55 pm. Once all the busses have left, you are free to park your car closer to the front gate. Campers will be brought down to the front gate for easy pick up!

LUNCHES & ‘SNICKLE SNACKLE’ Daily ‘snickle-snackle’ (a Freezie treat at the end of the camp day) will be served as a treat at the end of each camp day!

Parents send a lunch to camp and extra snacks as desired. Campers’ lunches are not refrigerated at camp. As a result, lunch boxes or thermal lunch bags must include an ice pack to keep the lunch fresh.

Please note that Chipmunk, Beaver and Buffalo campers have snack breaks in the morning and afternoon. Parents should pack healthy light snacks for these scheduled breaks. Older campers will also be given snacking opportunities throughout the camp day.

Campers completed grades 5 and older will have the opportunity to buy snacks from our Staff Tuck Shop. All items cost between $1-$3 and will be available for purchase during lunchtime. Everything is peanut/nut free. Options include bagels, ice cream, chips, yogurt, fruit, bars and more!

Note: For safety reasons, food cannot be eaten on the camp bus. However water can be consumed when the bus is at a complete stop (example: when a bus is stopped at a red light). Juice and pop are not allowed on the bus as they attract both bugs and insects.

Optional Lunch Program: For parents who prefer to purchase food for their camper we work directly with Kids Kitchen. You order your food online and the cost is a la carte. You can order as much or as little as you want - as often as you want. Minimum 72-hrs notice is required to order or make changes to an order. Lunches are peanut/nut free and 'Kosher Style’; both Vegetarian & Gluten Free options are also available. Campers enjoy a variety of healthy hot lunches. Individual hot meals are prepared fresh each day by Kids Kitchen. As food is delivered during lunch time, we recommend that you send additional snacks for the morning.

All campers should bring a labelled re-usable water bottle to camp each day.

DON’T FORGET!

PEANUT, NUT & OTHER LIFE-THREATENING ALLERGIES Our policy with respect to keeping campers with allergies safe is drawn from Anaphylaxis Canada’s resources for camps.

Green Acres is a “peanut/nut safe & peanut/nut aware” camp. Green Acres is not a 'Peanut/Nut Free' camp. We simply cannot have absolute control over the contents of lunches and snacks that campers and staff bring to camp each day. It is the responsibility of the anaphylactic/potentially anaphylactic child’s parents to inform the Camp Office in writing of their child’s allergy. For all other allergies and dietary restrictions, we are happy to work with you to accommodate your child. With regards to extended nights and cooking programs, we work with parents to provide alternatives so that they everyone can be included.

Allergen Awareness / Allergen Avoidance We are appealing to the camp community to keep peanut butter and other peanut/nut products out of the camp. Parents must never send to camp food to share with other children. In short, the risk of accidental exposure to a food allergen has been diminished although it can never be completely removed.

READ THE LABELS! Canadian food products must include allergy caution notes. If the product says “May contain nuts, peanuts, tree nuts” it is NOT allowed at camp. If a Canadian-made product does not have a caution note on the nutrition information, it is safe. (International foods do not have the same nutrition fact laws and therefore may not be safe. Read the ingredients to be certain). If a product is Peanut Free, it does NOT mean that it is NUT Free.

Because of cross contamination, baked goods from stores and bakeries are not allowed at camp (i.e. Tim Hortons, McDonalds, Longo’s, etc.)

Given that anaphylaxis can be triggered by a tiny amount of allergen in food anaphylactic children must be encouraged by their parents to follow certain guidelines: • To eat only food which they have brought from home unless it is packaged, clearly labeled and

approved by their parents. • Wash hands before and after eating. • Not to share food, utensils or containers. • Place food on a napkin rather than in direct contact with a table or picnic table.

Treatment Protocol • An individual treatment protocol needs to be established by the camper’s allergist. • The camp cannot assume responsibility for treatment in the absence of such a protocol. • A copy of this should be present in the Health Centre along with a photo of the camper.

For all other allergies and dietary restrictions, we are happy to work with parents to accommodate your child. With regards to extended nights and cooking programs, we communicate with parents to put alternative plans in place so that they everyone can be included.

FRIDAY SPIRIT RALLY Our Friday Spirit Rallies are one of the most anticipated events of the week. Every Traditional Camp unit as well as Specialty Camps, All-Star & Cedar Creek, is assigned a unit colour. In keeping with the spirit of the day, we ask that you try to ensure that your campers come dressed (at least one piece of clothing, preferably a top) in their unit colours which are outlined below:

Chipmunks (Nursery) - Navy Blue Seniors (3-4) - White Beavers (JK) - Red Grads/Alumni (5-7) - Green Buffaloes (SK) - Yellow Specialty Camps - Purple Bears (1) - Orange LTPs - Black Eagles (2) - Light Blue Cedar Creek - Plaid All-Star/Raptors - Sport Jersey * Grade completed in June 2019

REFER TO THE FOLLOWING ADDITIONAL NOTES BY UNIT:

For Chipmunk/Beaver/Buffalo campers: • Pack a reasonably sized lunch - 1 lunch choice and 2-3 snacks is sufficient. Too much choice

can be overwhelming • Velcro running shoes are preferred over laces • Blankies and special comfort toys are best left at home since they will likely get dirty and may

be forgotten at camp • Campers should wear their bathing suit to camp. • Pack a labelled ziplock bag with an extra set of clothing (shorts, t-shirt, underwear, socks). This

will be kept in their bag until used. Soiled items will be returned with a note requesting a new set of clean clothes.

For Bears/Eagles/Seniors: • Remember to send 2-3 snacks! • Running shoes are necessary for many activities. They should either be worn or packed in their

knapsack.

For Grads, Alumni & LTPs: Please remember to bring everyday: • Proper running shoes are mandatory (no backless sandals or flip-flops please) • A bathing suit (mandatory for all including LTPs) • A notebook and pen/pencil (LTPs only) • Lunch, water bottle and snacks • Cell phones MUST be put away and NOT used at camp • Deodorant (optional) • Loonies and Toonies for Tuck Shop (optional)

Raptors/All-Star Campers: • Baseball - Glove • All-Star campers may bring their own racquets, sticks, clubs, etc. - these will be left in a locked

storage area and returned home with the camper on their last day - please ensure that all equipment is clearly labeled.

Cedar Creek and Saddle Champs Riding Campers: • Long pants must be worn (stirrup pants, leggings or tapered jeans). • Sturdy boots or shoes with a defined heel are mandatory (rain boots with a heel are okay but

not as comfortable). CAMPERS WITHOUT PROPER FOOTWEAR CANNOT RIDE. • Campers in half-day Saddle Champs program may use one of the camp supplied riding

helmets - we recommend that children bring their own for better fit and comfort. Riding helmets must be labeled with the ASTM approval.

• Cedar Creek full day riders MUST supply their own ASTM approved riding helmet with chin harness.

• If you would like to purchase additional equipment we recommend jodhpurs, breeches, paddock boots or tall boots.

• Riding equipment can be purchased at Bakers Harness and Saddlery, phone number 905-887-9441 or Greenhawk Harness & Equestrian Supplies at 416-782-9598 in Toronto or in Markham at 905-888-4666. Other retailers for new and used equipment can also be found online.

WHAT NOT TO BRING/WEAR TO CAMP: • Peanut and tree nut products (any food items that contain or may contain peanuts or nuts) • Toys, stuffed animals • Valuables, jewelry, hanging earrings • Expensive/designer clothing (some of our paints do not always come out completely in the

wash) • Trading cards/Playing cards • Sandals (with back straps are allowed), flip-flops • Glass bottles • Aerosol sprays (e.g. Insect repellant, sunscreen, deodorant) • Umbrellas • Cellphones, Smartphones, Smartwatches, Airpods, headphones, hand held video game devices

and other electronics are NOT permitted either on the bus or on camp grounds. If used, they will be taken away from the camper and returned upon their arrival at home.

• Hoverboards, Roller blades, skateboards • Green Acres will not be responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items.

LOST & FOUND When campers are having fun at camp they also become easily distracted when it comes to keeping track of their clothes and other personal property.

Parents, therefore, should NOT feel annoyed with their child or with the counsellors when clothing items become misplaced or "lost". All staff give their best effort to keep track of clothing during the camp day. Although everyone is aware that this is important, "lost & found" will happen in a busy day camp setting.

HOW LOST & FOUND IS HANDLED AT CAMP Lost items that have been left on the camp grounds are collected at the end of each camp day and are brought into the Central Lost & Found Department (below the Green Acres Cafe) for cleaning & sorting. When found, labelled items are packaged by our full-time lost & found attendant and sent home on your child’s bus at the end of the camp day. Lost items without names or insufficient identification are sorted and placed on display racks in the Central Lost & Found Department.

If your child misplaces something at camp, just send an email to your child’s unit head and they will do their best to locate the item.

Note: Anything misplaced inside a Unit Rec Hall or the change rooms are kept in a bin inside those facilities. Campers can sift through these unit bins during the day for whatever they may have misplaced. These bins are emptied daily and their contents transferred to Central Lost & Found for sorting.

Campers can visit the Central Lost & Found between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. each camp day. Parents can also visit Lost & Found on any Family Night or Extended Night.

At the end of the camp season all articles of clothing and other personal belongings left at camp are placed on display in the central “Lost & Found” facility for 14 days. Parents are welcome to come to camp and look for any items left behind by their child. After this period the Lost & Found is donated to a social agency.

To ensure that everything that gets misplaced is also found: LABEL ALL CLOTHING, SHOES AND ACCESSORIES (Glasses, goggles, water bottles, etc.) WITH YOUR CHILD’s FIRST AND LAST NAME.

Summer 2019 30

DON’T FORGET!

Lost

and

Fou

nd

NAME LABELS Each day misplaced articles are gathered together and promptly returned to their owners by our Full-Time Lost and Found staff. However, without identification we are unable to do this.

(a) Please label all articles brought to camp with your child’s first and last name (including water bottles, knapsacks, goggles, shoes and Green Acres clothing). All clothing, including socks, underwear, jackets, etc. MUST be clearly labeled.

CAMP HEALTH CERTIFICATE - MANDATORY FOR ALL CAMPERS

YOU WILL RECEIVE AN EMAIL WITH A LINK TO A GREEN ACRES HEALTH CERTIFICATE FOR EACH OF YOUR CHILDREN IN MAY. IN ORDER TO ATTEND CAMP, YOU MUST FILL OUT AND SUBMIT YOUR HEALTH CERTIFICATES ONLINE TO THE CAMP OFFICE NO LATER THAN JUNE 15!

Please note that a doctor's signature is not required on our camp Health Certificates. This is in compliance with Ontario Ministry of Health Regulations.

If your child has a medical history whose complexity is greater than usual, then you may wish to have your doctor complete the form. Please understand, however, that there may be a charge levied by your doctor for this service.

Please notify Green Acres Day Camp in writing if there is any change in the medical condition of your child(ren) between the time of completing the Health Certificate form and their stay at Camp.

HEALTH AND MEDICAL CARE PARENT INFORMATION Our air conditioned Health Centre is staffed by a full time registered nurse or registered practical nurse and a student nurse. The nursing staff is readily available to campers with any routine complaints. Campers with an upset tummy, over-exhaustion etc., will be admitted to rest or recuperate. When campers "bounce back" in an hour or so and return to activities we do not usually advise parents, but a note outlining the visit will be sent home with the child. Only if we are more than normally concerned about a health matter will we be in touch with you.

The camp nurse may be contacted by telephone at 905-887-1400 ext. 228 or by email [email protected] or a visit at any time may be pre-arranged once camp has begun.

MEDICATIONS FROM HOME Should there be an occasion during the camp season that medicine from home has to be administered at camp, please be sure to fill out a medication form and phone the health centre ahead of time so that we can be alerted to expect the medication.

ALL MEDICATION MUST BE GIVEN TO THE BUS CAPTAIN FOR DELIVERY TO THE HEALTH CENTRE - DO NOT SEND MEDICATIONS IN YOUR CHILD’S KNAPSACK.

All medications are to be administered by the camp health centre. Do not send medication with your child to be self-administered. All medications must be sent in their original dispensing containers!!

The Ontario College of Nurses has directed that a nurse “may administer these medications if they are in their original dispensing container (not an envelope or mechanical aid...)”

To comply with this directive, please send all medications to camp in their original dispensing containers only. This applies to both prescription and over-the-counter medications. These are to be accompanied by a ‘Parental Authorization to Administer Medicine’ slip (see pg. 41). If your child is to be on routine medication or has specific medication requirements, it is a good

idea to review your situation with the camp health centre prior to the start of camp.

Most pharmacists will divide the dosage of prescription medications into two containers, if requested. One container can be used for administration at camp and one for administration at home. This helps to ensure that all doses are given.

Non-prescription medications requested by the parent for short term treatment i.e. cough medicines, decongestants, antihistamines will be administered and stored according to the policies outlined for the administration and storage of prescription drugs and medications.

EPIPENS OR INHALERS Camp Green Acres requires that each camper have two Epipens at camp: one in the health centre and in an epipen pouch carried by the camper. Each camper requiring an epipen will receive a Green Acres epipen pouch, on their first day, which they MUST wear at all times (except during swim times).

Each camper with an Epipen must have an Anaphylaxis Plan completed by the parent.

Directions for administering puffers must be clear and a medication form must remain on file for both regular and occasional use of puffers.

SUN SAFE, SUN SMART At Green Acres we encourage parents, campers and staff to be "SUN SMART". Sun hats are a must - every day! Keep extra hats at home in case one gets misplaced or lost. The application of sunscreen is a routine part of the camp day. Please send a labelled sunscreen bottle to camp on your child's first day, as it will be kept at camp. Parents should apply sunscreen prior to departure for camp each morning and counsellors will assist and supervise campers to reapply their sunscreen lotions at regular intervals during the day.

SAFETY HELMETS The camp supplies safety helmets when campers participate in mountain biking, trike track, “Saddle Champs” horseback riding, pony rides, high ropes and the ‘All-Star’ baseball camp program and Extreme Biking.

For sanitary reasons campers are requested to wear a disposable hair net when they use a camp-supplied safety helmet. Disposable hair nets are supplied by the camp at each of these activities. These are similar to what a doctor would wear in a surgical room environment.

Campers participating in ANY trips to Camp Wahanowin will be required to have a Head Lice check by our camp nurses prior to departure.

CHILDHOOD ILLNESSES Our Camp follows the local Public Health guidelines related to the length of time campers need to be excused from camp and when they may return to the camp.

If your camper becomes ill during the day, you (or the emergency contact) will be notified to pick up him/her as soon as possible. In some cases a confirmed diagnosis by your Doctor may be required before your camper returns to the camp.

If your child has been absent from camp due to medical reasons the Director may require you to obtain a Doctor’s note, at your own expense, in order for your camper to return to camp.

The following are some of the more common childhood illnesses and the camp policies for their treatment:

Chickenpox - After confirmed diagnosis, the camper must remain at home until all lesions are crusted over, the camper is fever free and able to participate fully in all aspects of the program. Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) - The camper will be excluded from camp if discharge is thick and yellow or green. The camper must be treated with prescription antibiotic drops for 24 hours and the eyes must be clear of discharge before returning to camp.

Common Cold - The camper may attend as long as there is no fever and the camper feels well enough to participate in all aspects of the program.

Coxsackie Virus (Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease) - After confirmed diagnosis, the camper may return to camp if they are fever free and feel well enough to participate.

Croup - The camper may attend as long as there is no fever and is able to participate.

Fifth Disease (Slapped Cheeks Syndrome) - After confirmed diagnosis by Doctor, the camper may return if fever free and able to participate in all aspects of the program.

Head Lice - The camper will be sent home when lice are detected. A Pharmacist or Doctor will recommend appropriate treatment. The camper may return after certifying that treatment has been administered and that the camper is free of pediculosis i.e. all nits (dead or alive) have been removed from the hair. Parent MUST continue to remove any nits until none remain. This will take several days. Follow up treatment seven days later is ESSENTIAL to ensure all nits are killed. If any live lice are rediscovered, treatment must be given again.

For a service to help you deal with a lice situation, you can call Buggin’ Out at (905) 761-5423.

Pertussis (Whooping Cough Bacteria) - The camper must remain at home under antibiotic treatment for 5 days of the 14 day course or 3 weeks if untreated.

Ringworm - The camper may return after appropriate medication has been taken or used for at least 24 hours.

Roseola - After confirmed diagnosis by Doctor, the camper may return if they are free of fever and able to participate fully.

Strep Throat / Scarlet Fever / Impetigo - After confirmed diagnosis by a Doctor, a camper must be fever free and treated with antibiotics for one full day before returning. All of the above are strains of Streptococcal bacteria.

Persistent Vomiting or Diarrhea - The camper will be removed from camp if diarrhea or vomiting is persistent or accompanied by fever or other signs of illness. The camper must be free from vomiting or bouts of diarrhea for 24 hours in order to return to camp.

Diseases and infections not listed will be assessed by your camper’s physician and/or Public Health Services to determine an appropriate course of action.

WAHANOWIN OVERNIGHTS The unique experience our campers get from staying on a Green Acres Overnight at Wahanowin is invaluable! For some, this is their first time sleeping out of the house on their own. Almost all parents in the past who have doubted that their child could "handle" the experience, were pleasantly surprised. Campers come home proud of their accomplishment and full of stories to share.

BEAR, EAGLES & SENIORS GO TO WAHANOWIN In addition to one Extended Night at Camp Green Acres, campers in the Bears (completed grade 1), Eagles (completed grade 2) and Seniors Unit (completed grades 3 or 4) will be going to Camp Wahanowin for one of their overnights during the summer. Seniors will be going for one night on July 22nd, 2019 and Eagles & Bears will have their overnight on August 7th, 2019. Our sister camp, Camp Wahanowin, is located in Orillia. Our campers will get to enjoy their amazing facilities and activities, including zipline, trapeze, tubing, canoeing and so much more. Green Acres staff and Unit Heads will be joining them and will be welcomed by Wahanowin Directors Bruce, Patti, Pete, Tan and Katie. Campers will leave for Wahanowin in the morning and return mid-afternoon the next day. It’s an experience not to be missed! There is a small fee when your child participates in this optional camp program.

PERMISSION FORMS To participate in the Wahanowin Overnight program, parents are required to complete an online Permission Form and must complete an online Green Acres Health Certificate. The link for the permission form will be e-mailed to parents about one week prior to the Overnight event. In order for Wahanowin to ensure accommodations for everyone - No permission forms will be accepted after the deadline specified in the email and on the permission form.

HAVE A SLEEPING BAG READY The only special equipment needed on overnights is a flashlight, pillow and a sleeping bag (packed in a duffle bag - not a suitcase). A clothing list and a menu plan will be included with the permission slip form. As per regulations at Camp Wahanowin, cell phones and other electronic devices are NOT permitted on overnights.

SPECIAL MEALS - KOSHER AND VEGETARIAN OPTIONS Parents of children who have dietary restrictions should contact Kathy, [email protected] to ensure that dietary needs will be accommodated. Also, vegetarian and kosher options are available upon prior request. Do not send your own food with your child to Wahanowin.

CAMPER BIRTHDAYS Is your child having a birthday during the camp season? Would you like his/her group to celebrate the birthday?

We’d be pleased to assist in organizing a mini party at camp. Here’s all you do: Alert the camp office 48 hours in advance; We will order peanut and nut-free, kosher treats for your child’s cabin (up to 15 cupcakes) from Lollicakes - Cupcake Shop. Our staff will distribute the goodies and celebrate the Birthday at lunchtime. Due to camper allergies we cannot distribute homemade or bought treats. Treats from home will be discarded by our staff and will not be sent back home.

Please call the camp office to charge your VISA for $30 plus HST.

FAMILY NIGHT & AFTER CARE We host one Family Night mid-way through the camp season - Thursday, July 25th. We encourage parents to come to camp and meet their child’s counsellors, chat with their swim instructors and enjoy the many special activities, including games, bouncing castles and so much more. Family Night runs from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. Pizza, drinks and snacks are for sale at a nominal cost until 7:30 p.m.

We understand that for some campers the commute home and back to camp in time for 6:00 pm may be too tight. We offer a special after care for Family Night only from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.! For $25 per child, campers will be supervised by selected Green Acres staff and enjoy fun after camp activities (crafts, sports, games and more!). The price includes two slices of pizza, chips and a drink for dinner.

Permission slips will be emailed to you one week prior to Family Night and MUST be returned with the fee no later than the day before the event. Same day requests will NOT be accepted.

PARTNERS IN PARENTING HOW WE DEAL WITH BEHAVIOUR ISSUES Camp is a wonderful opportunity for a child to explore new challenges, establish lasting friendships, play in a social environment and build upon their social skills.

Campers are typically so busy at camp and enthusiastic about all of the activities and spirited programs that the incidence of a serious behaviour issue is uncommon. Should it be necessary, however, to intervene with a child who has a problem with behaviour, our leadership team has the resources, skills and experience to do so.

In the event that a camper is struggling with a pattern of ongoing inappropriate behaviour which may cause a safety risk to themselves or others, we will immediately notify the parent. At this point, together with the parent, we will review a plan of action that will be followed through both at camp and at home to ensure success for the camper. Ongoing daily communication will keep the parent informed of their child's progress at camp and will also provide feedback to camp staff.

Please note that, although rarely used, the camp reserves the right, at the sole discretion of the camp directors, to terminate the stay of any camper if it is considered to be in the best interest of the child or the camp.

THE MORE YOU TELL US - THE BETTER THE CARE If your child has struggled with behavior, learning, shyness and/or anxiety issues, whether at school, home, other camps or extra curricular programs, it is important that you let us know. The more you tell us, the better we are at placing the best staff for your child and putting preventative strategies into place. We want your child to be successful at Camp and the more we know about your child, the better able we are to make that happen!
