PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Please note that during Parent-Teacher conferences, students will be released at 1:05 p.m. on Monday,
Tuesday, Thursday, Friday. Wednesday release time will remain at 1:15 p.m.
I would like to take this opportunity to invite all of you to the Principal’s Talk Story (Community Meeting #1).
The Talk Story is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 1 in the Cafeteria at 6:00 p.m. Free dinner will be served at
6:00 to 6:30 p.m. I will be sharing our current STRIVE HI status and possible focus areas for our Academic
and Financial Plans. The Board of Education has required all public schools be accredited by 2018-19 school
year. We are scheduled to go through the Accreditation process with the Western Association of School and
Colleges (WASC) in the 2018-19 school year. I would like to share the accreditation timeline with you at Talk
Story as well. We will be having child care available and a lucky number drawing sponsored by our PTA at the
end of the evening. If you would like to attend please call 305-1600.
November traditionally is the start of the holiday season. I would like to wish all of our Salt Lake Elementary
School Ohana a very happy and safe Thanksgiving Holiday. For your information our office hours:
No school on Thursday & Friday, November 24 & 25, 2016
Office will be open on November 25, 2016 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Happy Holidays!
Duwayne F. Abe
Principal

PROMOTING A SAFE AND HEALTHY CAMPUS
EMERGENCY INFORMATION
If your contact information (phone, business, email, etc.) changes, please notify the office to make any updates. In the event your
child is sick or if there is an emergency, we need to contact you and communicate necessary information pertinent to your child. Your
cooperation is appreciated.
MORNING DROP-OFF AND AFTERNOON PICK-UP
Mornings are very important to students (and adults). A good morning will set the tone for learning the entire day. Please help your
child(ren) have a good day by signing all forms and having them get their belongings/backpacks in order before they enter your car to
leave for school. Please do not park in the bus loading/unloading zone. It is reserved for bus transportation and arranged
circumstances. There have been reports of cars reversing from that area into the crosswalk where our staff is helping children get
from one side to the other. It is very dangerous. Finally, for those parents or guardians loading & unloading at the “island” area,
please pull forward so that you child can enter/exit your vehicle in a safe area beyond the new planter section. Your cooperation will
be greatly appreciated!
STUDENTS ON CAMPUS BEFORE & AFTERSCHOOL
We are concerned about the safety of students being dropped off at school as early as 6:00 a.m. and also those students remaining on
campus well after 2:30p/1:30p on a daily basis. There are reports of homeless people that roam on campus during the early mornings,
and it is dangerous for your child(ren) if they are here by themselves as there is no adult supervision in the morning. In addition,
please make arrangements for your child(ren) afterschool as there is also no adult supervision on campus. Kama’aina Kids continue
to accept applications for their A-Plus afterschool program.
STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS - November
On Oct. 26 and 27, a committee did Halloween activities with the special education pre-
school and FSC students.
On Oct. 31, the Student Council helped to host the “Dress as a Book Character Parade”.
Students dressed as book characters and paraded down the mall during recess to
Halloween music. This event was to kick-off the National Young Reader’s Day on Nov. 9.
Students are encouraged to read to a younger child and share a good book with a friend.
From Nov. 2-16, classes will be collecting canned goods to donate to the Hawaii Food
Bank. The class that brings in the most canned goods will receive a Jamba Juice party at
the end of the year.
