“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the signifi-cance of the life we lead.”

T he past year has been a trying time for our family — the Pardes family. Sadly, we have been forced to face loss and changes. This challenge has made many

of us stop and pause about what truly matters in life. We are not just pretty faces on the cover of a magazine, and our stories matter. I am a person who often doesn’t sleep and who reflects daily on the sacrifices paid forward by all my friends. Please take 10 minutes out of your lives to just walk and reflect on the benefit we share in this country. During our journey in Pardes Maga-zine, we have found a quote by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that best captures the essence of a

core value that has guided us throughout our lives: the value of speaking up for what is right. He wrote, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” In the spirit of King’s words, then, we can no longer be silent; this is why we picked this topic for the November issue. Therefore, we collectively speak up to support Water for India. A conversation with a friend regarding an event that will be hosted in Tampa touched my heart and opened my eyes. Pardes Magazine is known for touching people’s lives, and she called me “an angel on Earth?.” This understated comment showed me I can use our magazine as a tool to reach others and make change. There’s one other feature that I’m particularly proud of in this month’s issue: The feature articles in this issue answer some of the questions. Every year we pick a topic that no one else is talking about. I think you’ll find it worth-

while. Let me know if I’m right. You can look at one category at a time or just peruse the articles in our online issue to choose which to read first. Just as with a paper magazine, you may want to sit and read the whole thing at once, or you can come back to this issue several times to digest the articles more slowly. If you didn’t download our app yet, I dare you to do it! We appreciate your support and are so happy to have you as a reader of Pardes Magazine. On behalf of everyone at Pardes Magazine, have a safe and enjoyable holiday season. We’ll see you again in December with our last issue of the year. With warmest thanks,

get in touch...We want to hear from you be it a kind word or even how we may have fallen short of your expectations, we love hear-ing from our readers. Each comment is important to Pardes magazine and we appreciate the opportunity to address

FOR YOGA AND TRADITIONAL MEDIcINE

Gets Minister India has set up a ministry to promote alternative

therapies such as yoga and traditional ayurveda med-icine as Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarks on a mission to raise awareness and the appeal of home-grown health treatments.

Modi has repeatedly called for greater use of Indi-an health remedies and exercises as part of a push to promote traditional learning. During his first address at the United Nations in September, he encouraged more people to take up yoga and called for an Inter-national Yoga Day.

“This is our system, and it has not received enough prominence. We will take it to the masses,” said Shri-pad Naik, who took charge of the ministry on Tues-day.

The formation of the ministry comes days after the government unveiled plans to set up a regulator for traditional drugs. India wants to expand its pres-ence in the estimated $100 billion global market for alternative medicine.

Ayurveda and other types of traditional medicine, called unani and siddha, are popular in smaller towns, and yoga has a huge following across India and in the West. Homeopathy also finds wide acceptance in In-dia.

The country’s most popular yoga guru, Swami Ramdev, also promotes the use of traditional medi-cine. He sells ayurvedic medicines and holds yoga camps attended by thousands in India and abroad.

But critics often question the effectiveness of tra-ditional remedies over modern medicine. Modi said on Sunday that ayurveda and mainstream drugs are not mutually exclusive.

“There is a need for larger awareness in ayurveda,” he said. “It can’t be limited to a doctor only. Our an-cestors made good health a part of life.”

The success of the new ministry will depend on additional budgetary allocation, a government of-ficial told Reuters. The government allocated 10.69 billion rupees ($174 million) to develop and promote traditional health systems in the 2014-15 financial year.

“We have not got the attention. ... We are looking for a steep rise in our funding for next year,” said the official, who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter.

T he most powerful countries in the world fought for land and political supremacy during World War

II. If in near future World War III ever occurs, it will be for fresh drinking water. Despite the fact that two third parts of the world is filled with water, millions of people all over the world everyday face drinking water crisis. If truth to be told, then there are more than two billion people on earth who live in areas where water scarcity is very high. In India, fresh drinking water crisis is even more complicated. Millions of Indians at present don’t get clean drinking water at

all and the situation in the coming years may get even worse if positive steps are not taken. Lack of proper drinking water can affect the health of newborn babies and elderly people. Waterborne diseases can spread anytime and kill millions of people. India’s demand for clean drinking water is increasing at an alarming rate. People living in rural areas as well as big metropolitan cities are suffering due to the water scarcity. The amount of money people spend on a bottle of packaged drinking water proves the poor drinking water condition of India beyond any doubt.

At present India ranks at number 2, just after China, in terms of “most populated country in the world”. According to experts, the population of India will reach 1.6 billion by the end of 2050 and thus, it will be the most populated country in the world. The rise of population will make the clean water supply even more difficult because of the demand-supply rule. The large agricultural sector and growing industrial development are continuously putting pressure on the water supply. Meanwhile, drinking water supply is dropping due to mismanagement of water resources, pollution and illegal pumping. Climate change in the coming years will only increase the crisis. We are already witnessing the unpredictable nature of monsoon season. Lack of rainfall is affecting the supply of fresh water.

The water crisis of India is rooted in three factors. First of all, there is not enough water per person due to population boom in the past 50 years. According to 2011 census, the population of India is 1.2 billion and only 1000 cubic meters of water is available per person. How bad is that? According to experts, if a country has less than 1700 cubic meters of water per person, it is considered as water stressed and India can supply only 1000 cubic meters of water for each citizen. On the contrary, USA has approximately 8000 cubic meters of water per person this year.

The second reason for water scarcity is inadequate and delayed investment in water treatment facilities. While there are plenty of rivers across the nation, none of them is fit for drinking. In fact, some are

WWW.PARDESMAGAZINE.COM I VOL 4, ISSUE 11 19

NOVEMBER ‘14 PARDES MAGAZINE

not even good for bathing. The water is so infected that skin diseases may affect your health condition if you regularly bath in such rivers.

Ganga Action Plan was launched in 1984 to clean the most important river of India, but even after 30 years not much has changed. The facilities created for cleaning Ganges did not receive adequate funds from the government and the factories located on the river banks did not follow the pollution rules. They used this huge source of drinking water as a place for dumping garbage. Most of the state governments don’t have sufficient human resource and technology to stop the water pollution.

The third reason for poor groundwater supply is over extraction by farmers. Land ownership in India is highly fragmented. Millions of farmers own less than 2 hector area for farming. Since ground water is an open access resource anyone can pump water from the land he or she owns. In 2010, 251 bcm of groundwater was extracted. On the contrary, the groundwater extraction rate of USA was 112 bcm in 2010. The data proves how irresponsibly Indian farmers are drying the main resource of clean drinking water.

There is no doubt that India’s water crisis is mainly a manmade problem. Neither the climates of this country dry, nor is there any lack of rivers. Poor management, corruption, lack of strict laws and industrial waste are some of the main culprits behind this issue.

The good news is that government and NGOs are taking constructive steps to make the situation better so that the next generation doesn’t fight with each other for a gallon of water. Watersheds are being developed throughout the country to reduce water wastage. Watershed development is all about leveling lands and capturing rainwater in small ponds. The small ponds are created by developing small dams in the streams. This preserved water helps in increasing soil moisture, boosts groundwater supply and allows farmers to plant crops twice. The 11th 5-year plan of India covered approximately 15 mh land with watersheds. NGOs have helped in this endeavor as well. For example, Tarun Bharat Sangh, an NGO run by Rajendra Singh improved the drinking water supply of Alwar district in Rajasthan by implementing water harvesting and water management strategies. Similarly, the community groups, NGOs and government of Gujarat built more than one hundred thousand check dams over the last few years.

The main problem of urban water supply is poor distribution network. For example, if you consider the capital of India, the availability of per capita water is better than Paris, but the city does not supply proper drinking water to the citizens. Not only the suppliers are unprofessional, pricing is another major factor as well. In order to streamline the distribution network some states gave contracts to private companies. For example, the city of Dharwad (Karnataka) has solved water supply issue and people are getting constant clean drinking water, thanks to a private company that is managing the city’s water network.

The 12th 5-year plan of India (2012-2017) highlighted the drinking water issue and laid out some strategies to ensure seamless drinking water availability throughout the nation. Watershed

development, irrigation facility enhancement and aquifer mapping are given top priority. Central government expressed hope regarding the association of state governments and NGOs for the greater good of India.

NGOs can play a huge role by educating people in rural areas about the importance of water storage. Since groundwater is an open resource farmers extract as much as they need, but when every small farmer and residential apartments do the same, the situation becomes horrible. This problem can only be solved if people cooperate with the government. They need to know how much water can be extracted without emptying the source.

Latest technology also needs to be implemented to increase the supply of fresh water. MIT engineers recently found out a solution to supply pure drinking water to the villages in distant parts of India. According to them a process called “electrodialysis” can be implemented to purify saline water. This purification process can supply water for up to 5000 people with the help of power generated by a solar panel array and a battery. This is a great solution for Indian villages because there are still thousands of parishes in India that lack electricity supply.

Supplying clean drinking water to the ever growing population is certainly a daunting task and India needs to go a long way. However, the central and state governments are implementing various strategies to ensure a healthier future for the inhabitants of this vast nation. NGOs are trying to make people aware of the importance of water and NRIs are offering funds to save their motherland from water scarcity. So, it can be said that India will eventually overcome this challenge in the coming years.

Force India Will Definitely be Racing in 2015: Vijay Mallya

Force India co-owner Vijay Mallya has rejected speculation about his Formula One team’s fi-nances, saying they will be racing for years to come.

Speaking at the Brazilian Grand Prix, where only nine teams com-peted on Sunday, Mallya said Force India would not be following Marussia and Caterham onto the sporting scrapheap.

“All this speculation I think needs to stop,” the liquor baron told Reuters. “It’s not doing anybody any good…the bottom line is we’re OK.”

Mallya said the team’s 2015 car was almost ready. Asked whether Force India would be definitely rac-ing in 2015 and beyond, he replied: “Of course. Absolutely.”

Since last month’s Russian Grand Prix, Marussia have folded and Caterham has gone into ad-ministration.

Force India, Lotus and Sauber, whose finances have also caused concern, want a more equal distri-bution of the sport’s revenues, but their request for a ‘base payment’ appears to have fallen on deaf ears in Brazil.

Commercial supremo Bernie Ec-clestone told reporters on Sunday that the teams as a whole shared $900 million in revenue and ruled out extra payments.

However, Mallya said Ecclestone

had told him he was meeting Don-ald Mackenzie, co-chairman of rights holders CVC, to discuss the matter on Tuesday. “If I don’t hear by the end of the week, I’ll send him a gentle re-minder,” he added.

Force India is co-owned by Mallya and the Sahara Group is run by Sub-rata Roy, one of India’s best known tycoons, who is in a Delhi jail over the conglomerate’s failure to refund billions of dollars raised in outlawed bonds.

“Sahara is by no means financially weak or bankrupt,” said Mallya. “On the contrary, Sahara has a huge amount of financial resources. It is just that they have been asked to refund money to investors and there’s a dispute there.”

Mallya also has troubles of his own, with United Bank of India in Septem-ber declaring him and his grounded carrier Kingfisher Airlines “willful de-faulters,” although a court has halted execution of the decision. Meanwhile, debt-laden Kingfisher has not flown for two years for want of cash.

A report in Britain’s Sunday Tel-egraph said Force India reported a net annual loss of 38.5 million pounds ($61.21 million) on Dec. 31, 2013. That was up from a previous $33.4 million. The teams are currently sixth in the championship.

Clean water: In America it is in excess. We simply flip the faucet on, and out gushes beautiful, crystal-clear water. Some people don’t even dare drink water from the tap and have companies drop off gallons of filtered water each month to their homes. Millions of people in the states this year even dumped clean water and ice over their heads and posted it on social media. Clean water is such a simple necessity that we don’t consider it a luxury. But in India, clean water is a luxury.

• 780millionpeoplelivewithoutclean drinking water

• 2.5billionpeople—includingalmost 1 billion children — live without basic sanitation

• Insomeurbancities, watercomesout of taps an average of 3 hours a day

• AccordingtoUNICEF,morethan600,000 Indian children die every year because of polluted water

• 75percentofIndia’sriversandlakes are so polluted that they should not be used for drinking or bathing

Knowing the facts about water makes

you appreciate the simple luxury we take for granted every day. I have even sent back water when I thought I caught a glimpse of dust in it. Now I feel ashamed that I was once so wasteful, especially when Indian children often have to drink from rivers and lakes. These rivers and lakes, often the only source of water available, are the same rivers and lakes that people have to bathe in and use as a lavatory.

India is 8,000 miles away, and its problems are out of sight and out of mind. Maybe some of us were born in the United States and have never even visited India. But as the name of this magazine translates, India is our home away from home, and its people are our people. If its children do not have water to drink, it is like our children do not have water to drink.

Water for India is an annual event sponsored by “I DO” Good Charity, founded by myself (Michele Renee Zerda with Michele Renee The Studio), Seema Patel, Megha Kothur (Two Ladies and

Events) and Therese Cole-Hubbs (Electric Karma International). We are a group of wedding professionals who believe that it is not just enough to witness love; we also have to spread love and do good.

Water for India is in its second year and took place on September 28, 2014, at Isla Del Sol Country Club, located in St. Petersburg, Florida. Alan Skipper, director of catering, and Zee Rehman, decorator and owner of A Linen Valley, decorated the ballroom facing the ocean in splashes of blues and greens. Ann P. honored the event by singing both the American anthem and the Indian anthem.

The room was festive. DJ Firoz got the party started with the best Hindi beats, and the room was buzzing with entertainment for the guests who sponsored bore wells. Jen Garrett from Jen’s Henna provided henna demonstrations throughout the night, while Jeff Boone supervised the guests enjoying Boone’s Professional Events photo booth. Everyone was surprised by a special performance from The USF Bull

A highlight of the night was the tasty treats provided by Sajna Nishad from Sugar N Spice N Everything Nice Catering. For a special treat, Diana Tamayo cured everyone’s sweet tooth with gelato from the Gelato Carte.

The night was photographed by Regina Rached from Regina as the Photographer, and Marilyn Castorina from Castorina Photography and Films made sure all festivities were captured on video. Shriyan Sanmuganathan from Shriyan Photography captured many guests striking a pose at the step n repeat.

Kresha Shah, a designer from Traditions by Kresha, ended the event with her luxurious Indian clothing in all shades of blue to honor the sponsorship of wells.

The event received organizational support from Lainey Dunn from Simply Wow Events and Lisa Mohyla from Exquisite Events.

Water for India’s purpose is to raise bore wells for rural villages in Southern India. “I DO” Good has partnered with Chaitanya Educational and Rural Development Society to help implement bore wells in villages with the most need. In addition, CERDS provides sewing machines, HIV medications, toilets, fishing nets, and skill training.

& Stunning in Fall Trends

2014It is November now, and fall, the latest word for the

autumn season, has arrived. With the change of every season, the world of fashion comes up with new trends. Summer 2014 presented a lot of stunning fashion trends with bright colors taking over the soft pastel shades. Now, fashionistas are eagerly waiting for some fabulous trends to rule in autumn. So, let’s unfold the hot, hip and happening fall trends of 2014.

1. Leopard print is a rage —There is not a single word to describe the charm of leopard print. It is hot, it is effer-vescent and it has timeless appeal. Leopard-printed tops and dresses never ever went out of fashion, and this fall, they will rock the fashion world for sure.

2. Retro fashion is back with a bang — Retro fashion has a great allure, but this particular trend has never been stable. Over the last few years, it has resurfaced, faded and has again resurfaced. Retro fashion was nowhere this summer only to come back in autumn this year. Knee-

in Fall length skirts, knee-high boots, large hoop earrings and vibrant colors are going to be the favorites of girls this fall.

3. Style with hats — The end of summer months does not mean bye-bye to all sun-guard essentials. Although scorching heat will not be an issue, you must do your bit to protect your-self from the harmful UV rays of sun. Apply sunscreen lotion and put on a lovely wide-brimmed or a cowboy hat for a strik-ing style statement. Several hat designs are available. Choose according to the color and style of your outfit.

4. Dress and trousers makes a perfect combo — The pairing of trousers and a dress is in fashion now and will be for years to come. Famous designers have vouched for that, and lead-ing fashion magazines have raved about that. So, what are you waiting for? Put on your favorite dress and trousers and be the center of attention. Make sure the colors are in contrast and accessorize well.

5. Sneakers replacing heels — Do you simply hate wear-ing high heels for the sake of style? Then, fall 2014 has good news for you. You can make a style statement at parties and club events without wearing stilettos and wedges. Switch to sneakers and carry your own style with comfort and elegance. Sneakers are one of the striking trends of fall 2014.

Dress up stylishly this fall with these five fashion trends.

Ranveer said his character undergoes changes when a rich girl, essayed by Parineeti Chopra, enters his life.

“She teaches him the finer things of life. It’s a very soft character, and (director) Shaad Ali was telling me that after ‘Gunday’ and ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela,’ we need to show your softer, innocent and endearing side,” said the energetic actor.

Ranveer also had to put on some weight for the role “because in ‘Gunday’, my face looked hard as I had more muscle and less body fat at that time.”

But, with the advent of winter, a lot of skin problems arise. Taking proper care and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help you keep the winter skin troubles at bay. If you follow the below mentioned tips religiously, you can keep yourself healthy and energetic and fight all the skin problems in winter months. Have a healthy diet

During winter, there is a tendency to lean towards spicy and foods, especially fried items. The pleasant weather arouses the craving for such food items. It is fine if you are having them in less quantity. In case you go overboard, your digestion will be affected and the results will show up on your skin in the form of breakouts. In order to avoid that, go light on spicy foods and eat lots of green vegetables and fruits. Include boiled veggies instead of fried ones in breakfast, lunch and dinner. Have a whole fruit in mid-morning. drink plenty of water

The best way to stay fresh in winter is drinking lots of water every day. Water intake tends to be low in this

particular season since we do not feel dehydrated much. However, this does not mean that you should reduce your sufficient intake of water which is at least, three to four liters a day. Your skin needs to be hydrated to maintain radiance and tightness. Have a sound sleep

A strong immune system owes to a good night sleep. If you have a healthy immune system, your skin will reflect that. Late nights are a complete no-no and get a sound eight-hour sleep. Dark circles, poor digestion and a dizzy head are the troubles of inadequate sleep. do light exercise

If you are not game for a rigorous exercise regime during winter, make sure to some gentle exercise at least. Hop out of the bed a bit early in the morning and perform a few free-hand exercise movements. You may do yoga also, but you must learn to get the asanas or postures right from a professional. Exercise helps to keep body healthy from inside and you will be able to flaunt a glowing skin.

Put on thick cottons Thick cottons are a better pick than woolens

that are made of animal skin. Wear thick cotton jackets and cover your ears with thick cotton shawls. This way you will feel warm and comfortable in winter by not harming animals.

Take a 10-minute shower

A hot water bath is relaxing and rejuvenating in winter. But, make sure that your shower time does not exceed 10 minutes. Skin gets dry and rough if it is under water for a long time. Enjoy your hot water bath, but remember this tip. Avoid using soap bars and do not forget to apply moisturizer after bath.

Following these six tips will make sure that your skin is well-nourished, radiant and healthy.
