Geography

The town is located on the Bay of Ilha Grande, which isdotted with many tropical islands. Rising up as high as1,300 meters behind the town are tropical forests, moun-tains, and waterfalls. It is the southernmost and western-most city in Rio de Janeiro state.

Paraty is surrounded by many parks and nature pre-

serves, including Serra da Bocaina National Park, Serrado Mar State

Park (of So Paulo), the Park Reserve of Joatinga andthe Cairuu Environmental Protection Area, where thevillage of Trindade is located. The municipality also in-cludes an indigenous village and an Afro-Brazilian qui-lombo.

The temperature in Paraty ranges from 16C to 37C. Itswettest month is February.[2] However, sea breezes tem-per the heat and afternoon rains are common in thesummer.

Paraty was founded formally as a town by Portuguesecolonizers in 1667, in a region populated by theGuaians Indians.

The Guaians people who lived where the city nowstands called the entire area Paraty. In the Tupi lan-guage Paraty means river of fish. Even today theBrazilian Mullet (Mugil brasiliensis) still come back tospawn in the rivers that spill into the Bay of Paraty.When the region was colonized by the Portuguese,they adopted the Guaians name for their newtown.After the discovery of the world's richest goldmines in 1696 in the mountains of Minas Gerais, Paratybecame an export port for gold to Rio de Janeiro andfrom there on to Portugal. The ensuing gold rush led tothe construction of the "Caminho do Ouro" or "GoldTrail", a 1200 kilometer road, paved in steep areas withlarge stones, which connected Paraty to Diamantina viaOuro Preto and Tiradentes. Not only was it used totransport gold to
