The Basics of Essay Writing

When writing an essay, there are 3

basic things that you must do:

- Introduce your topic (introduction)

- Give details to support your topic(body)

- Write an appropriate conclusion

(conclusion)

What is an Essay?

An essay is a group of

paragraphs related to the topic

What is a Paragraph?A paragraph is a group of

sentences which are related and

supports the topic.

Parts of a Paragraph

The main parts of a paragraph

are the topic sentence and

supporting details

The Topic Sentence

The topic sentence is a single sentence

that summarizes what the paragraph is

about. It is like a sign post that tells the

readers the direction of the paragraph.

Supporting Details

Supporting details are sentencesthat back up the main points of the

paragraph such as examples,

statistics, testimony etc.

Introductory Paragraphs

The introductory paragraph must be

interesting enough to capture the

readers interest. This can be done

by using:

- Anecdotes

- Quotations- Dialogue

- Incidents etc.

-Yesterday, Comel, my cat, finally

waddling around like a fat duck for

what seemed like ages..- Nelson Mandela once said that

You must:

- Present ideas that will support yourtopic

- Write one paragraph for eachidea

- Explain each idea even though it

might seem obvious

In your introduction you have written

that you dislike Sunway Lagoon and its

your least favorite place to visit.

You should support this statement in thebody of your essay.

Point A:

Sunway Lagoon is expensiveDetails:

i) The entrance fee is RM30.00ii) Food and drinks cost twice as

much as other places

iii) The souvenirs are unaffordable

The waiting lines are too long.

Details:

i) There are long waiting lines to

get the entrance ticketsii) There are long waiting lines to

go on the rides

iii) There are long waiting lines to

The food and drinks are not

tempting at all.

Details:i) There is very little choice

ii) The food is not fresh

iii) The drinks are overly sweet

You can do this by using transitional

words or phrases such as:

-Firstly, secondly, thirdly-Finally, lastly

-Furthermore

-Meanwhile

-Then ..

The Conclusion

You could:

-Summarize the main points

-Restate the main idea

-Make a prediction-Make a recommendation

-Suggest a solution to the problem

-Ask thought provoking questions
