1. God is not deceived by false promises. 2. 21:33 The parable of the two sons (Matthew 21:28-32) was a parable about judgment; here is another parable about judgment. 3. 21:35 Those who had been given such privilege had become not only independent, but resentful to the one who blessed them. 4. 21:36 Critics of this parable have said that it is too far-fetched, for who would keep sending their people to get killed? This is the very point Jesus was making…even the most gracious man would not keep being patient. 5. 21:37 The owner could send armies to destroy the wicked, but instead sent his own son. 6. 21:38 Greed is never satisfied. 7. 21:38 The vine-growers knew exactly who the son was. It was for that very reason that they planned his murder. 8. It was the uncommonness of the owner’s extraordinary patience, contrasted with the vine-growers’ wickedness, that Jesus wanted His hearers to notice. 9. 21:40 The vineyard owner would not allow this final horror to go unpunished. Jesus made it clear that there would be a time when the owner would personally come. 10. 21:40 In typical rabbinic fashion, Jesus led His hearers right to the edge of the cliff, giving them the opportunity to draw a conclusion and the end the story. 11. 21:41 The nation’s leaders were quick to fill in the blanks at the end of Jesus’ parable, unaware that that had just judged themselves in the same way King David unknowingly judged himself before Nathan (see 2 Kings 12).
