Occasionally in conversation people compliment
a stole that I am wearing for worship or wonder
aloud about the color choices in the front of the
sanctuary. After a recent conversation some-
one said, “You should really explain that to peo-
ple sometime.” For example, my stoles are not
a fashion statement, though some of them are
very beautiful. The color is meaningful, as I will
explain below.
The church year, or liturgical year, is divided into
several seasons. The liturgical year begins the first Sunday of Advent and ends with
Christ the King Sunday in late November. We are currently in the liturgical season of
“Sundays after Pentecost.” Pentecost is a time in which Christians remember and give
thanks for the gift of the Holy Spirit. You may recall the story of the disciples gathered
in the upper room 50 days after Jesus’ resurrection to celebrate the Feast of Weeks or
Shavuot, a spring harvest festival observed by Israelites. A roar like wind filled the
room, tongues of fire danced over their heads and they were filled with the Holy Spirit,
with courage and boldness to preach the gospel, which they did. (See Acts 2) All the
Jews gathered in Jerusalem for the Festival heard the disciples speaking the Good
News in their own language. Some refer to Pentecost as the “Birthday of the Church”-
for the assurance, joy and confidence that came with the Holy Spirit emboldened the
disciples to begin to carry the gospel to all the world and organize communities of be-
lievers.
Each season of the church year has a color. The color for Pentecost is red, for the
tongues of fire. That is why our altar cloth and pulpit cloth (called “paraments”) and the
pastor’s stole are red on Pentecost. Some church’s change their paraments to green
for the Sunday’s after Pentecost which are sometimes called “Ordinary Time.” Either
red or green are appropriate for this season.
Additionally, the liturgical calendar assigns three scripture lessons and a Psalm as
readings for each Sunday in a three-year cycle. There is an Old Testament lesson, an
Epistle lesson (from the NT books that are not gospels) and a Gospel lesson. If the
liturgical calendar was followed through the entire three year cycle virtually all of the
Bible would be read in worship. This schedule of readings is called “the Lectionary.” I
will be preaching from the lectionary in August – November.
You will now find the liturgical date noted at the top of the inside page of your worship
bulletin, just below the date. If you would like to learn more about the Christian Year or
Lectionary, feel free to seek me out. I love all the elements of worship and worship
planning, and I would be happy to discuss these things further with you.

Receiving New Members
We will be receiving new members on September 1st.
At our baptisms we become part of the family of God. At confirmation
we confess our faith and assume personal responsibility for our growth
in faith and service to others through the church of Jesus Christ. Transfer from one church to an-
other is quite a simple thing. It is also common for adults to become members of a particular
congregation through the confession of their faith in Jesus Christ. If you would like to discuss
baptism or church membership with Pastor Robyn, contact her at 319.415.6593 or drop into the
office on Tuesday or Thursday mornings.

(After Worship) What Does It Mean to be a United Methodist?

beliefs and polity of our denomination. All are welcome.

“Being able to express my feelings and just be listened to, with no one trying to “fix” me, means so
much.”
“I know that what I am feeling now and have felt in the past is normal for me. I am so grateful to have
a resource (book) to refer to when I am having a difficult day.”
