“SrIvaiShNava naimittika sangraham”
[Serves the need of such srivaiShnavites, who are keen to carryout, but novice to, naimittikams.]
SrI vaishNava naimittika sangraham
Sri:
Every srivaiShnavite is duty-bound to follow, at the prescribed time, srimannArAyanA’s Commandments, as applicable to one’s essential nature. These
dictums are known as sAstrAs.
These duty-prescriptions are classified into 1) nityam – routines, that are to be performed without fail; 2) naimittikam – to be performed without fail, on the
occurrence of a particular cause; and 3) kAmyam – performances prescribed in sAstras and chosen by some to be done in expectation of few material-benefits. Out
of these, naimittikam and kAmyam are based on occurrences like “day / titi / nakShatra”. The almanac or panchAng is a compilation of “the durations, astronomical
data etc.” of these ‘day / titi / nakShatra’. Thus it is clear that panchAng is the basic text-reference to carryout Almighty’s Ordinance.
A reference to the almanac, has been one of the daily cores of our preceptors. This facilitates one, to bring to memory, the duties to be performed on a
particular day. This compendium - “srivaiShnava naimittika saNgraham” is made out keeping in mind, the need of such srivaiShnavites, who are keen to carryout, but
novice to, such naimittikams.
This is compiled in two parts – first, containing “the occurrences, time and specific naimittikams” with reference symbols; and the other, “pancANga of such
occurrences (in bold) during the current Tamil year along with cross-reference symbols as to what-to-observe”. The first part is constant, irres- pective of any year;
the second one, to be compiled each year.
Tips for using this “srivaiShnava pancANga saNgraham”
Each morning, refer the second part of the book; note down the nimittam -“day / titi / nakShatra” marked bold and the cross-reference symbols, as against
that day. Then, look to ‘what-to-perform details’ under the cross reference symbols listed in the first part. Care should be taken to venture into rituals that are
applicable to each one and practised by one’s predecessors.
Generally, males are expected to perform the rituals. Women should adopt only such duties, which are common – such as, EkAdasi vratam / pAranai /
specifics during eclipse / amAvasya etc.
Admission : In this compendium , It is not intended to detail “how to perform these rituals”.
It is fervently pleaded that srivaiShnavites use this book and beget the benevolence of Bhagavan.

Rules & Time for performance of naimittikams
A-1 : amAvAsai – tarpanam - time, & if srAddham befalls
Persons whose Father is not alive, should perform tila tarpanam on all amAvAsya, provided they are not disqualified, due to tEttu (Asoucam)
When a person acts as srAddha bhOktA at EkOddiShta/ sapindi karana, he has to observe the period of 7-days after bhOjan, similar to tEttu . If, during that period
amAvAsya falls, it is the considered view of sri tirukkOttiyur swamy that, amAvAsya tarpan should be performed, since it falls under swakarmA .
Day-time between 15 &16 nAzhigai (11.36 am to 12.24 pm) which is known as kutapa kAlam, is the period for doing tila tarpanam. [explanation : in case persons are
otherwise engaged in mundane during this period, the next best may be to advance its performance during the day; this is better than non-performance]
On all tarpanam days, only one-time-meal is permissible; If fasting is not possible, something which is not full-rice-based (annam) can be taken. This is known as
palahAram in Tamil. This rule is valid, even on occasions when, a person is temporarily disqualified to perform tarpanam, due to tEttu.
During the period of conglomeration of ‘night & amAvAsai’’ some preceptors are of the view, that nobody- including Women / children / Persons whose Father is alive
– should eat annam; that means, they may take palahAram. This was the anushtAnam of Sri TirukkOttiyur swAmy.
Persons, who are to perform pitru-srAddhA this day, should complete it first and then – before food – perform amAvAsai tarpanam & vastra niShpIdanam. In case of
srAddha bhOktAs – swamis – they should perform amAvAsai tarpanam & vastra niShpIdanam, before srAddha bhOjanam.
If mAsappirappu and / or Solar eclipse befalls this day then, only the mAsappirappu and / or Solar eclipse tila tarpanam is to be performed (and not amAvAsai’
tarpanam). But, persons who are used not to perform viShNupati & ShadasIti tarpanams, should do amAvAsai’ tarpanam.
A-2 : anadhyayanam (Divya prabandha)
During the period, beginning from the day next to tirukkArtigai in the Tamil month of kArtigai, and ending with the day prior to uttirA Star in the Tamil month of tai, it
has been customary NOT to recite Divya prabandhams in Temples and Homes. On tai hastam day (coinciding with the tirunakShatram of sri kOOrattAzhvAn), Divya
prabandham recital starts, with
tiruppallAndu todakkam. [In some temples, recital starts on some earlier dates, as per their anuShTAnam]
During anadhyayAnam, instead of Divya prabandham, nAlAyira taniyan / dEsika prabandham is recited.
As an exception, during DhanurmAsa ArAdhanam, it is permitted to recite tiruppaLLi ezhuci and tiruppAvai. Some AcAryAs use to begin this recital with
tiruppallAndu.
A-3 : anvashtakA srAddam
Persons whose Father is not alive, should perform tila tarpanam today.
On all tarpanam days, only one-time-meal is permissible; If fasting is not possible something which is not full-rice-based (annam) can be taken. This is known as
palahAram in Tamil. This rule is valid, even when a person is temporarily disqualified to perform tarpanam, for reasons like Asoucam – tEttu.
Persons, who are to perform pitru-srAddham today, should perform pitru-srAddham first and afterwards –before food – do anvaShtakA tila tarpanam & vastra
niShpIdanam. In case of srAddha bhOktAs – swamis – they should perform anvaShtakA tarpanam & vastra niShpIdanam, before srAddha bhOjanam.
If mAsapirappu befalls today, mAsapirappu tarpanam is to be done first; and then anvaShtakA tarpanam.
A-4 : aparAhna
Day-time, normally of 30 nAzhigai – is equally divided into five periods viz. prAta / sangava / madhyAnha / aparAnha / sAyAhna
– sequentially, of 6 nAzhigai each; and aparAnha is the period between 16 and 24 nAzhigai from sun-rise (normally 6 00 am) – i.e. noon 1.13 to 3.36. [explanation :
1 nAzhigai = 24 minutes]
A-5 : aShtakA srAddham
Persons whose Father is not alive should perform tila tarpanam today.
On all tarpanam days, only one-time-meal is permissible; If fasting is not possible something which is not full-rice-based (annam) can be taken. This is known as
palahAram in Tamil. This rule is valid, even on occasions when, a person is temporarily disqualified to perform tarpanam, for reasons like Asoucam – tEttu.
Persons, who are to perform pitru-srAddhA today, should perform pitru-srAddham first and afterwards –before food – do aShtakA tila tarpanam & vastra
niShpIdanam. In case of srAddha bhOktAs – swamis – they should perform aShtakA tarpanam & vastra niShpIdanam, before srAddha bhOjanam.
If mAsapirappu befalls today, mAsapirappu tarpanam is to be done first; and then aShtakA tarpanam.
A-6 : atithi
A day, that is devoid of any tithi, for performing srAddhA, is called ‘atithi’’.
(e.g.) On 1.5.2007, during aparAhna, pourNami is present for 3.55 nAzhigai only. Next day, on 2.5.2007 pourNami is for 24.57 nAzhigai, spanning the entire
aparAhna; which means, pourNami srAddhA is due only on 2.5.2007 which has longer spread of pourNami during aparAhna. It also so happens that caturdasi tithi,
had fallen on 30.4.2007 itself. Hence, 1st May, which is devoid of any tithi, is termed atithi.
A-7 : ayana punyakAlam
The 12 monthly entries of The Sun into each rAsi, are grouped into four : viz. viShu / ayanam / viShNupati / ShadasIti. In that :
Tamil months cittirai & aippasi are - viShu
“ Adi & tai “ -ayanam “vaikasi/ Avani/ kArtikai & mAsi “ –vishNupati
Ani/ purattAsi,/ markazhi & panguni “ -shadasIti
-ayana punyakAlam (period for tila tarpanam) are :
-for Adi - 20 nAzhigai before mAsappirappu
-for tai - 20 nAzhigai after mAsappirappu
Persons whose Father is not alive, should perform tila tarpanam today.
When a person acts as srAddha bhOktA at EkOddiShta/ sapindi karana, he has to observe the period of 7-days after bhOjan, similar to tEttu . If, during that period
amAvAsya falls, it is the considered view of sri tirukkOttiyur swamy that, amAvAsya tatpan should be performed, since it falls under swakarmA .
Persons, who are to perform pitru-srAddhA today, should perform ayana tarpanam first and then do srAddhAm & vastra niShpIdanam. In case of srAddha bhOktAs –
swamis – they should perform ayana tarpanam & vastra niShpIdanam, before srAddha bhOjanam.
If eclipse befalls this day, only grahaNa tarpanam is to be performed (and not ayana tarpanam)
B-1 : Birth day
Birth day should be celebrated on that day, in which one’s birth star is present at least for 12 nAzhigai from Sun-rise. If it is less, the previous day should be the Birth
day.
Subject to the above rule, when the Star appears twice in a Tamil month, the second occurrence should be the Birth day. (e.g.) During sarvajit cittirai, since satayam
star appears twice – on 14th April & 11th May, satayam-born celebrate on 11th May.
What is to be done on Birth day ? As prescribed in sAstrAs, grabbing this opportunity, special pooja and naivEdyam could be arranged at home and Temples, for
The Lord. bhAgavata tadIyArAdhanam could be carried out. One is duty bound also to salute and pay obeisance to AcAryas and elders, today.
B-2 : bOdhAyana amAvasyA
Everyone should perform rites, only in accordance with their sootra. Since majority of people belong to Apastamba sootra, the prescriptions given in this Hand Book,
are in accordance with that.
Persons belonging to bOdhAyana sutra and who are eligible to do tarpan, should perform amAvAsya tarpan on the day it is mentioned as
bOdhAyana amAvAsya in the almanac. Other tarpan-day rules are common for all.
D-1 : dhanur mAsa ArAdhanam
In general, daily bhagavad ArAdhanam should be performed, only after sun-rise (and not before). It is an exception that, on all days during dhanur mAsam (month of
mArgazhi) additional ArAdhanam known as uSha:kala ArAdhanam is to be performed, during brAhma muhUrtam (before Sun-rise) itself.
It is sri tirukkOttiyur swamy’s anuShtAnam to i) perform the uSha:kala ArAdhanam before Sun-rise, even on the first day when Sun enters dhanus before 44.0
nazhigai that day; and ii) fetch water for uSha: kala ArAdhanam, the previous day before Sun-set.
D-2 : dwAdasi – pAraNai kAlam
Generally, pAraNai should be undertaken within 6 nAzhigai of Sun-rise or before the close of dwAdasi tithi if it is less than 6 nAzhigai. Hence it is permissible to
complete mAdhyanhikam /
ArAdhanam / vaiSvadEvam etc. before pAraNA time itself. At the same time, harivAsaram period is to be avoided.
PerumAl tErtham and AcAryan’s sri pAda tErtham should be taken, before pAranA.
Normally, Grean-gram & Goose-berry (amla) should be used; and Tamarind, & penta-banana (leaves / flower / raw-fruit / fruit /
stem) should be avoided in pAraNA. Goose-berry is avoided by women, if it is Friday; and by all (except those in whose family any ancestor has been an ascetic) on
Sunday.
In case it is not possible to take pAraNA within the time prescribed as above, jala pAraNA with the mantra (as advised by AcArya) could be taken.
If it happens to be, srAddha tithi, both the performer and the swami, are exempt from adopting rules normally applicable to
paraNA - such as, timing / avoidance of kadalE pancakam / AcArya’s sri pAda tErtham etc. They should follow srAddha rules only.
E-1 : Ekadasi vratam (fixing / srAddham)
When EkAdasi tithi spans over two or three successive days, vratam should be undertaken on the last day (even though that day, EkAdasi tithi may be present for
only one vinAdi).
In addition to this prescription, Dasami tithi should not be present (this is known as dasami vEdhai) either during that day or beyond 56 nAzhigai or more of the
previous day, in which case vratam falls on the next day.
Moreover, whenever DwAdasi vratam is to be followed in a day because of the presence of DwAdasi tithi (even for 1 second), EkAdasi vratam befalls the day prior
to that.
(e.g.) (i) On 24.7.2007EkAdasi tithi was there for 2.26 nAzhigai over dasami tithi; spread over for 60.0 nazhigais on 25.7.2007 and extended for 0.59 nAzhigais the next
day also (26.7.2007). Hence vratam falls on 26.7.2007 only, which is the last day.
(ii) On 21.11.2007, from Sun-rise dwAdasi tithi was present. The previous day (20th) consisted of 4.10 nAzhigai of Dasami tithi and 55.09 nAzhigai of EkAdasi tithi.
Because of Dasami vEdhai on 20th, EkAdasi vratam could not be undertaken that day; instead, it is to be observed on the day next (21.11.2007) – even though 21st,
had no spread of EkAdasi tithi.
Another example : On 24.10.2008, from sun-rise EkAdasi tithi was present for 55.48 nAzhigai; but it was afflicted with dasami vEdhai – (the previous day, 23rd, had a
spread of 2.27 nAzhigai of navami tithi + 56.10 nAzhigai of dasami tithi = 58.37 nazhigai, which is more than 56.0 nazhigai from sun-rise). Hence the next day, 25th,
is EkAdasi vratam day.
(iii) On 21-1-2009 EkAdasi was present for 58.51 nAzhigai; Since DwAdasi vratam was to be followed on 23-1-2009 (because DwAdasi spanned the whole day for
60.0 nAzhigai on 22nd and 4.01 nAzhigai on 23rd), EkAdasi vratam befalls on 22nd only.
For EkAdasi vratam, fasting is to be observed the whole day. Children / Old and incapacitated persons may take palahAram, instead. [ Sri TirukkOttiyur swAmy was
of the view that even for
palakAram , pariShEcanam / ApOsanam should be performed, as is done during anna bhOjanam ]
The ‘fasting / palahAram’ rule does not apply to swAmins at srAddha bhOjanam and hence only annam should be offered to them as dattam. For others, including
kartA, the ‘fasting’ rule has to be followed. At the same time, consuming pitru seSham is a must for kartA. To ensure compliance of both rules, after pinda
pradAnam, the kartA should only smell (AghrANam) the left-over of pinda pradAnam, (which is annam only) and not eat. For the
purpose of bhOjanam of kartA and others, little sojji palahAram (broken-rice bath) is served to swAmins after dattam, the left-over of which is treated as pitru
seSham.
On srAddah day, falling on EkAdasi tithi, karta should perform vaiswadEvam only through water and not annam. More over sripAda tIrtham of swamins is also not
taken.
G-1 : gAyatri japam
On the day of prathamA tithi following srAvana pournami, gAyatri japam should be performed by all sakhins. The day previous to this, ‘one-meal day’ should be
followed.
During mAtru-pitru dEkShA, gAyatri japam should be performed.
When disqualified because of Asoucam, gAyatri japam cannot be performed any other day. Some are of the view that it should be performed the succeeding krshna
prathamai.
H-1 : hari vAsaram
The first quarter of dwAdasi tithi (which may span 1/2/3 days) in a pakSha is known as hari vAsaram.
During this period of the day, rules of EkAdasi vratam will apply
(e.g.) On 13.4.2007 dwAdasi tithi over EkAdasi was = 8.41 + on 14.4.2007 dwAdasi was = 46.13
Total dwAdasi was = 54.54
Quarter of this = 13.43
(_) deduct yesterday’s dwAdasi nAzhigai = 8.41
balance of ‘Quarter’ from Sun-rise of 14.4.2007 = 5.02
Hence, on 14.4.2007, the day of dwAdasi, hari vAsaram should be observed till 5.02 nAzhigai from Sun-rise.
K-1 : kAmyArtha (vAra / nakShatra) vratam
Some undertake ‘fasting’ vratham or meals without salt or ‘one-time-meal’ on days like kritikai / sravanam / Monday/ Saturday etc. These vrathams as prescribed by
sAstrAs do not fall under nityam or naimittikam; Instead, are taken upon as kAmyams (self-inflicted in expectation of some material goal. They run the risk of anti-
effects, for non-adherence of prescriptions, strictly)
K-2 : krittikA dIpam
On the evening of pournami during Tamil month of kArtigai, pAncarAtra dIpa ArAdhanam is to be performed at home also. It is customary that women lit
dIpams only after the dIpa ArAdhanam.
K-3 : krshna aShtami vratam
Persons whose Father is not alive should, this day observe ‘fasting’ either in the day or night, but only during the presence of kshna aShtami tithi.
The adherence to, day or night fasting, once started, cannot be switched or swapped, afterwards.
Adherence to this is exempt, in case of srijayanti pAranA and srAddha bhOjanam. However, srAddha kartA has to follow the rule. . At the same time, eating pitru
sESham is a must for kartA. To satisfy both rules, after pindapradAnam the kartA should only smell (AghrAnam) the left-over (which is annam only) and not eat. For
the purpose of bhOjanam of kartA and others, little sojji palahAram (broken-rice bath) is served to swAmins after dattam, the left-over of which is treated as pitru
sESham.
On srAddah day, while krshna ashtami tithi is present, karta following ‘day-fasting’ should perform vaiswadEvam only through water and not annam. More over
sripAda tIrtham of swamins is also not taken.
K-4 : krshna caturdasi vratam
Same conditions as that of K-3 : krshna aShtami vratam
L-1 : Lunar eclipse
Persons whose Father is not alive should, this day perform tila tarpanam, during the start of waning of the eclipse
Even while undergoing Asoucam, grahaNa tarpanam is to be performed.
The normal rule of ‘one-meal-day’ or palahAram does not apply to grahaNa tarpanam
Eating / drinking are to be avoided during the period starting that nAzhigai, which is 9 hours before Lunar eclipse and ending with complete release of eclipse. In
case, before complete release of the eclipse, moon-set occurs i.e Sun rises, (grasta-astamanam) then bhojan could be taken only after sighting the moon-rise that
evening.
If mAsappirappu befalls this day, only grahaNa (and not mAsappirappu) tarpanam is to be performed.
Mantra japams / charity performed during eclipse, beget manifold results.
Women who are in the family-way, are advised not to view the eclipse.
M-1 : mAgha snAnam
To-day after taking bath, before the end of pournami tithi sea/ holi-river bath should be undewrtaken, with due sankalpA and “pippalAdi tarpaNam” after sea
bath.
After sea-bath, taking bath again (to wash away the salty feeling) is to be avoided.
Persons undergoing Asoucam or dEkShai and women who are pregnant are prohibited from sea-bath.
M-2 : mahALaya pakSham
During this pakSha, persons whose father is not alive, should perform sakrn mahALaya srAddham, which is normally perfor- med, mostly as tila tarpanam, on a
chosen day.
Generally it could be performed on maha bharaNi occurring on or after pancami tithi or madhyAShtami or maha vyatEpAdam or gaja Chayai, as mentioned in
the almanac.
It can also be performed on any other day, (starting krshna pancami till sukla pancami) provided the star that day, is not the birth-star of self/wife/children/ a
Friday/ prathamai/ Shashti/ EkA-dasi/ caturdasi/ rOhiNi/ makham/ rEvati.
It should NOT be a day when wife is “out-of-doors” (having periods). This need not be observed, if done after amAvAsya.
Those whose father has been an ascetic, and those whose father died in an accident must perform sakrn mahALayam, only on sanyasta mahALayam day and
sastrahata mahALayam day respectively; failing which, on anyother day during kanya month (subject to above rules) or krshna dwAdasi/ caturdaSI (respectively) of
tulA month.
If during the Tamil month in which mahaLaya pakSham falls, srAddha tithi also falls, then srAddham has to be performed first and only thereafter sakrn
mahALaya srAddham, on a day chosen as above. This restriction is not applicable for srAddha bhOjanam. If for reasons like srAddham/ Asoucam etc. sakrn
mahALaya srAddham could not be done during that pakShA (starting krshna pancami till sukla pancami), it is allowed till the end of tulA month.
Eligible persons, before performing sakrn mahALaya srAddham themselves. should not take the bhOjanam of mahALaya srAddha performed by others and
avoid shaving or oil-bath during the fortnight.
On all tarpanam days, only one-time-meal is permissible; If fasting is not possible something which is not full-rice-based (annam) can be taken. This is known as
palahAram in Tamil.
Some people used to follow ‘one-day-meal’, on the day prior to sakrn mahALaya srAddham. Sri tirukkOttiyur swAmy was of the view that ‘one-day-meal’ rule is
applicable only in cases where anna sraddham is performed on sakrn mahALaya day. i.e. this rule does not apply to tila tarpanam.
M-3 : mahA pradOsham
When trayOdasi tithi is present during Sun-set on a day, it is known as mahApradOSham.
-if it happens the next day also (provided trayOdasi is present for atleast half-nAzhigai after sun-set that day), then second day would be treated as
mahApradOsham.
-If it happens that, on no day the ‘trayOdasi/ sun-set alignment’ happens during a pakSha, then the day when trayOdasi occurs before minimum of six nAzhigai after
Sun-set, should be regarded as mahApradOsham.
On the day of mahApradOsham, during pradOsha kAlam (the period between four nAzhigai before & fifteen nAzhigai after sun-set) speaking / performing
aShtAkShara japa after sAyam sandhyA / chanting sahasra nama / adhyayanam and the like / visiting temples for sevai, are to be avoided. But arAdhanam at
home, sevai at nrusimha temples and taking part in temple utsavams is not prohibited. Some AcAryas perform aShtAkShara japa during this period also.
M-4 : mAsi srAddham
Persons whose father is not alive, should perform tila tarpanam as mAsi srAddham one day during each krShna pakSha. This day should be chosen such that 1) it
falls during pancami and next sukla pancami and 2) it is not a day when another tila tarpanam is to be done intended for matru-pitru (twin)devatas.
On all tarpanam days, only one-time-meal is permissible; If fasting is not possible something which is not full-rice-based (annam) can be taken. This is known as
palahAram in Tamil.
N-1 : naraka caturdasi
Oil-bath should be taken, usually 6 nAzhigai after sun-rise. It is an exception that on naraka caturdasi day, everybody should take oil-bath before sun-rise (which is
considered to be equal to ganga snAnam.) If this day happens to be srAddha tithi, or amavasya tithi , then people who are eligible to perform these, should not take
oil-bath; but follow rules applicable to srAddham or tarpanam.
N-2 : nrusimha jayanti
During day-time, fasting is to be observed. In the evening at sandhyA kAlam, jayanti ArAdhanam is to be performed at home. After this, the followers of sri ahObila
mutt would take pAranai (even if pournami is present); others would continue the fasting or take palahAram in the night and observe pAranai next morning only.
If srAddham is performed to-day, jayanti ArAdhanam is to be performed at home. After this, perumal tIrtham should be taken and not pAranA.
If srAddha bhOjanam is taken to-day, jayanti ArAdhanam could be performed at home, if no other person is available to perform. After this, perumal tIrtham could be
taken and not pAranA.
P-1 : palahAram
Whenever sastras prescribe upavAsam, persons who cannot follow this or children or elders, could go in for sojji (broken rice) or eatable made out of
other grains like wheat. This is only secondary adherence.
P-2 : panguni uttiram
It is customary that all women take palahAram this night, and not annam.
P-3 : pournami vratam
Persons whose father is not alive, should observe fasting or take palahAram that night.
But, if pournami is present on the day of nrusimha jayanti, followers of sri ahObila mutt could undertake pAraNA, that evening instead of palahAram.
S-1 : ShadasEti puNyakAlam
The 12 monthly entries of The Sun into each rAsi, are grouped into four : viz. viShu / ayanam / viShNupati / ShadasIti. In that : -
Tamil months cittirai & aippasi are - viShu
“ Adi & tai “ -ayanam
“ vaikasi/ Avani/ kArtikai & mAsi “ –vishNupati
“ Ani/ purattAsi,/ markazhi & panguni “ -shadasIti
ShadasIti punyakAlam (period for tila tarpanam) is : - 60 nAzhikai after mAsappirappu
On all tarpanam days, only one-time-meal is permissible; If fasting is not possible, something which is not full-rice-based (annam) can be taken. This is known as
palahAram in Tamil. This rule is valid, even on occasions when, a person is temporarily disqualified to perform tarpanam, for reasons like Asoucam – tEttu.
Persons, who are to perform pitru-srAddhA today, should perform ShadasIti tarpanam first and then do srAddhAm & vastra niShpIdanam. In case of srAddha
bhOktAs – swamis – they should perform ShadasIti tarpanam & vastra niShpIdanam, before srAddha bhOjanam.
If eclipse befalls this day, only grahaNa tarpanam is to be performed (and not ShadasIti tarpanam)
S-2 : Solar eclipse
Persons whose Father is not alive should, this day perform tila tarpanam, after the start of the eclipse. Some perform it, only after its waning starts.
Even while undergoing Asoucam, grahaNa tarpanam is to be performed.
The normal rule of ‘one-meal-day’ or palahAram does not apply to grahaNa tarpanam
Eating / drinking are to be avoided during the period starting that nAzhigai, which is 12 hours before Solar eclipse and ending with
complete release of eclipse. In case, before complete release of the eclipse, Sun-set occurs (grasta-astamanam) then bhojan could be taken only after sighting the
Sun-rise next morning.
If masappirappu or amAvAsyA befalls this day, only grahaNa tarpanam is to be performed (and not masappirappu tarpanam or darsa tarpanam)
Mantra japams / charity performed during eclipse, beget manifold results.
Women who are in the family-way, are advised not to view the eclipse.
S-3 Soonya tithi
If in a Tamil month, Nimitta srAddha tithi occurs twice, then srAddha is to performed on the day, the second tithi occurs, provided :
i)both the tithis have sankramaNa dOsha (occurrence of mAsappirappu); or
ii)the day of first occurrence of the tithi, has sankramaNa dOsha; or
iii)none of the two tithis is tainted by sankramaNa dOsha
In such cases, the tithi occurring first is to be treated as Soonya tithi (void).
(e.g.) During Tamil month of cittirai of sarvajit year, krShna dwAdasi tithi occurs twice – 14.4.2007 & 30.4.2007. Out of this 14th, is afflicted by sankramaNa dOsha
(second case mentioned above). Hence it is considered a Soonya tithi. Instead of none of these occurances, if the second-time tithi is having sankramaNa dOsha,
then the second tithi is considered a Soonya tithi.
No srAddham can be performed on the day of soonya tithi. But, if any srAddham gets postponed for reasons like Asaucam etc. it should be performed on the day the
Asaucam vanishes, even if it is a soonya tithi. One should, in such cases, use the current tithi during sankalpam.
S-4 : sravana dwAdasi
On this day, though dwAdasi is present, ‘fasting’ is to be observed at par with EkAdasi vratam. Then the next day is pAranA day. (there are divergent views on ‘how
to fix Sravana dwAdasi’, and hence be guided by the advice of AcAryAs –
[-According to Sri AhObila Mutt sampradAya – sravaNa dwadasi fasting is to be observed the whole day in which :
1) sravaNam and dwAdasi make their presence at sAyAnha period (i.e six nAzhigai before Sun-set) ; and
2) uttirAdam star is not present for two or more nAzhigai from Sun-rise ; and
3) trayOdasi tithi is not present for six or more nAzhigai before Sun-set.
Non-Mutt sampradayins, adopt the same criteria as set above, with a change that “instead of sAyAnha”, they go by madhyAnha vyApti ]
S-5 : sri jayanti
Today anna bhOjan is prohibited during day-time. That night, after taking bath, jayanti ArAdhanam is to be performed during vrShabha lagnam which is the
avatArakalam of Lord KrShna.
When different sampradayins have different days for performing sri jayanti, and one of the days happens to be Wednesday, it is sri tirukkOttiyur swamy’s
anuShtAnam to have the jayanti Wednesday itself.
After the ArAdhanam, followers of sri Ahobila mutt, undertake paranA (even those who normally used to ‘fast’ or take palakAram, due to krshna aShtami vratam).
Followers of other sampradAyam, adopt upavAsam / palakAram during that night and take pAranai the next morning.
Persons performing srAddham to-day should follow EkAdasi rules; in the night jayanti ArAdhanam should be performed, without pAranA or palahAram.
To-day’s upavAsam rules do not apply to persons who have to take srAddha bhOjanam ; but that night they can perform jayanti ArAdhanam in their homes, if no
other person is available to do. In that case, they can take perumal tIrtham, without pAranA or palakAram.
S-6 :sri rAma navami
ArAdhanam is to be performed mid-day, during kataka lagnam which is the avatArakalam of Lord rAma. After the ArAdhanam, followers of sri Ahobila mutt,
undertake paranA.
Followers of other sampradAyam, observe upavAsam / palakAram during whole day and take pAranai the next morning. Such persons - if happen to take srAddha
bhOjanam, need not follow upavAsam rules; if performing srAddha, should follow EkAdasi rules.
sri tirukkOttiyur swamy used to observe upavAsam / palakAram during whole day and take pAranai the next morning.
T-1 : tithi nirNayam / tithi dwayam
The tithi which is present during aparAnha kalam of the day, is to be considered as srAddha tithi. However it is further illustrated, as to how to arrive at srAddha tithi,
in case A) during aparAhnam there are two tithis ? or B) same tithi is present during aparAhnam of two successive days?
(e.g.) On 18.4.2007, prathamai tithi spans 22.50 nAzhigai followed by dwitEyai tithi; hence there are two tithis during aparAhnam. Since prathamai tithi was not there
during aparAhnam of yesterday but only to-day, srAddha tithi of prathamai falls to-day only.
-Moreover, since dwitEyai tithi is present during to-day’s aparAhnam only and not tomorrow (on 19.4.2007 dwitEyai tithi spans 17.13 nAzhigai only) srAddha tithi of
dwitEyai also falls to-day only. Thus the occurance of both the srAddha tithis –
(in this case, prathamai and dwitEyai ) the same day, is known as tithi dwayam.
In the above example, if dwitEyai tithi spans 19 or 21 nAzhigai on 19.4.2007, it amounts to the aparAhnam of both - 18th and 19th – having dwitEyai tithi . In such
cases, srAddha tithi falls on that day, the aparAhnam of which has got the longer span of that tithi. So,
1) when dwitEyai tithi spans 19 nAzhigai on 19.4.2007, it amounts to the aparAhnam of 18th having 1.50 nazhigai (24 – 22.50) and 19th having 1.00 nAzhigai
(19 – 18). Amongst these two, 18th is having longer span of dwitEyai tithi and hence dwitEyai srAddha tithi is to be fixed on 18th only.
2) when dwitEyai tithi spans 21 nAzhigai on 19.4.2007, it amounts to the aparAhnam of 18th having 1.50 nazhigai (24 – 22.50) and 19th having 3.00 nAzhigai
(21 – 18). Amongst these two, 19th is having longer span of dwitEyai tithi and hence dwitEyai srAddha tithi is to be fixed on 19th only.
U-1 : ugAdi paNdigai
It is customary to celebrate as pandigai, yugAdi New year also, same way as Tamil New Year’s day.
U-1 : upAkarma
In the morning of Rg / Yajur upakarma day, everybody starting from Brahmacari, should perform kAmOkArShIt japam.
Thereafter, Brahmacaris, should get their head/face shaven (keeping tuft). After this, everybody should perform mAdhyAhnika snanam, Oordhva pundram,
mAdhyAhnikam, yagnOpavIta dhAranam, & kaNda rShi tarpanam. In addition to these, Brahmacaris, should adopt minji (a kind of belt made of
specific grass / ajinam (deer skin in the style of yagnOpavItam) and daNdam (stem of samit or pipal tree) before kaNda rShi tarpanam. Finally, everybody should get
adhyayana hOmam (vEdArambham) performed, under the tutorship of Acarya.
Persons undergoing mAtru / pitru dIkShA (year-long no-shaving vow), should not perform kAmOkArShIt japam and adhyayana hOmam.
When upakarma is not performed on that day, for reasons like mAtru / pitru dIkShA or Asoucam, after relieved of these disqualifications, it could be performed on
any of the pournami day following, upto the month of aippasi.
On the day of upAkarmA, only one-time-meal is permissible if gAyatri japam falls, the day next to upAkarmA, ; If fasting is not possible something which is not full-
rice-based (annam) can be taken. This is known as palahAram in Tamil.
Persons belonging to sAma / Rg sAkhA, should follow upakarma rituals in accordance with that sAkhA.
V-1 : vishNupati puNyakAlam

If eclipse befalls this day, only grahaNa tarpanam is to be performed (and not viShNupati tarpanam)
V-2 : vishuva punyakAlam
