TOUR ITINERARY
Join us this coming March as we embark on the Ultimate Panama Canal journey. Sail through the Panama Canal and experience a special Stewart Tours second day visit to
the locks by land, including lunch overlooking all the action. We’ll start with a beautiful pre-stay & touring in Miami before boarding our cruise ship. Then we’ll skip the normally visited upper
Caribbean and instead stop at ports on and off the South American coast like Aruba, Curacao and the legendary city of Cartagena. After the two-day Panama Canal experience, we’ll explore the off-the-
beaten path coastal ports of Golfito and Quepos featuring the best National Parks of Panama & Costa Rica. Enjoy wonderful Stewart Tours included touring in several port visits and an optional post
cruise stay in Costa Rica visiting the Arenal Volcano and Monteverde Cloud Forest areas.
Day 1 – March 8: Arrive Miami, FL
Today is the first day of your Ultimate Panama Canal
journey. This next 12 days will be filled with wonderful
experiences, vivid sights, rich history and new friends.
Tomorrow we enjoy touring in Miami and then set sail
for the deepest Caribbean, once the homes of pirates
and traders, steeped in customs & music. After a
quick transfer tonight to our beautiful hotel, we come
together to celebrate with a wonderful group dinner.
Enjoy your evening in balmy Miami. (D) Dinner Miami
Day 2 – March 9: Touring Miami – Embark Ship After a nice breakfast at the hotel and a free morning, we are off to the Florida Everglades for an interesting ride on the famous airboats, exploring this vast wetland that surround Miami. Then it’s back to Miami for embarkation and lunch on the 5-Star Azamara Journey. This 694-guest jewel of a ship will be our home for exploration over the next 12 days. Enjoy a nice lunch onboard after an easy check-in. (B,L,D)
Day 3 – March 10: At Sea Upper Caribbean
There is nothing nicer than a day at sea, and that is made even better aboard the Journey, where you don’t need to fight for a deck chair, rush to reserve a table or fight any lines. This boutique ship is only 1/5 the size of most cruise line ships, only 30,000 gross registered tons! It is a country club casual experience, the beautiful intimate interiors are sure to impress! Maybe breakfast in the Windows Cafe, lunch and a good book in the Looking Glass lounge, dinner in one of the specialty restaurants? (B,L,D)
Small Boutique Ship
Day 4 – March 11: At Sea Lower Caribbean What is better than one day at sea? Two! This is our
second day at sea as we sail into the deep Southern
Caribbean to start our exploration off the coast of South
America. Enjoy all the entertainment, educational
programs and great food happening on the Azamara
Journey. When you’re not busy with all the interesting
things going, retreat to one of the beautiful lounges and
enjoy a specialty coffee, glass of wine or spirits, all
complimentary. Enjoy your second sea day in the
Caribbean. (B,L,D) Beautiful Lounges Onboard
Day 5 – March 12: Willemstad, Curacao (Lesser Antilles) We glide into the harbor of Willemstad on the stunning island of Curacao, one of three islands in the lesser Antille’s ABC islands. Dating back to the 1600s, the beautiful city of Willemstad is the capital of the island of Curacao and one of the busiest ports in the Caribbean. It was once the former capital of the Netherlands Antilles and its Dutch influences are felt everywhere. The Old Town’s colonial culture and unique architecture has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (B,L,D)
Day 6 – March 13: Oranjestad, Aruba As the capital and largest city of Aruba, Oranjestad is
named after King Willem van Oranje-Nassau, the first
heir to the Dutch House of Orange. Now mainly referred
to as “Playa” by the locals, Oranjestad is renowned for its
sunny weather year-round, with a virtually constant
temperature of 82 degrees. Unlike much of the Caribbean
region, Aruba has a dry climate and an arid, cactus-strewn
landscape and lies outside the Hurricane belt. Europeans
first learned of Aruba in 1499. (B,L,D)
Day 7 – March 14: Cartageña, Colombia (South America)
We arrive just outside the legendary and historical city
of Cartageña, founded in 1533. As a UNESCO World
Heritage Site, Cartageña is a historic city undergoing a
modern renaissance. Filled with legends, romance and
splendor, the walled city features Spanish colonial
architecture, cobblestone streets and many cultural
sites. Marvel at the Castle of San Felipe de Barajas, the
Palace of the Inquisition, and the Clock Tower; explore
the Squares of Los Coches, Santo Domingo, and
Centenario. (B,L,D)
Day 8 – March 15: Sailing Southern Caribbean
We turn westward, pointing the bow of the Journey
toward the Panama Canal. This is our last full sea day
on the Journey, but only the halfway point on the
cruise. We will sail by Colon and the breakwater that
shelters Limon Bay to the entrance of the Gatun Locks
of the Panama Canal. We will arrive at the staging area
for the Panama Canal at first light, an exciting day lies
ahead. Enjoy a relaxing sea day, the ship is starting to
feel like our second home! (B,L,D)
Day 9 – March 16: The Panama Canal
Today is an early morning, as we approach one of the engineering wonders of the world. Through the
three Gatun locks we will pass and across the largest man-made lake in the world. Then through the
spectacular Culebra Cut, one of the most beautiful sections of the Panama Canal. The lush jungle will
be pressed against the ship with only enough room to navigate in one direction. The three locks on the
Pacific side are divided on either side of Mira Flores Lake, we then pass under the Bridge of the
Americas and into the Pacific Ocean. It is a day you will truly enjoy. (B,L,D)
Day 10 – Homeward Bound
Day 10 – March 17: Panama City, Panama
Founded in 1519 by the Spanish conquistadors, Panama
City is now one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Central
America and home to incredible architectural and ethnic
diversity. We have a special Stewart Tours only Ultimate
Panama Canal experience. We have a private tour of the
city and then journey back to the Panama Canal to view,
learn and experience the canal system by land. Celebrating
the day, we will have lunch overlooking the locks, including
a visit to a VIP balcony overlooking the canal. (B,L,D)
Day 11 – March 18: Golfito, Costa Rica
We turn our course northward and leave Panama behind
and sail along the coast of Costa Rica to the port of Golfito.
Set against a beautiful backdrop of steep green hills and
a pristine rainforest, the port town of Golfito overlooks
tranquil Golfito Bay and is a gateway to Puerto Jimenez,
the renowned Osa Peninsula, and famous Corcovado
National Park—one of the few remaining large, lowland
tropical rainforests in the world. With an overnight stay
here, our evening arrival opens a whole day tomorrow
for exploration. (B,L,D)
Day 12 – March 19: Golfito, Costa Rica
Having arrived last night, we have a full day for touring
and exploring this incredible area. Golfito also has some
of the best beaches in Costa Rica. Combined with its
many marinas and boats, it features spectacular sport
fishing, yachting, surfing and other water sports. Nature
lovers will also appreciate Golfito. As Costa Rica’s only
city situated within a declared protection area, it’s home
to hundreds of species of rare flora, fauna, birds and
animals. (B,L,D)
Day 13 – March 20: Quepos, Costa Rica
A tropical inlet surrounded by a lush rainforest, Quepos
is an enchanting Costa Rican town, featuring six square
blocks of restaurants, bars, bakeries, art galleries and
gift shops, all fronted by the main beach. Other nearby
attractions range from the Butterfly Botanical Gardens
and the Damas Estuary with its maze of wetlands,
crocodiles, herons and monkeys, to the Naranjo River
and Savegre River for white-water rafting and the
Damas Caves to see stalagmites and stalactites. (B,L,D)
Day 14 – March 21: Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica
Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica has been a working port since 1577, and now over four centuries later, it’s the gateway to an abundance of riches. It serves as the primary access point from the Pacific Coast to Costa Rica’s historic capital, San Jose. Those returning to the USA today will have a transfer to San Jose for flights home. (Est. 90 minutes) (B)
Post Stay In Costa Rica
Those joining us for the optional 3-night post stay in Costa Rica depart the port on our private transfer. Our naturalist guide explains the flora and fauna as
we work our way to the Arenal National Park. Arenal Volcano is Costa Rica’s most active volcano
and the area that surrounds it is stunningly beautiful. We will explore the National Park
possibly seeing spot deer, tapir, howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys, snakes, and birds such as parrots, orioles and brown magpies. We’ll stop en-route for nice local lunch, before arriving at the perfectly
situated Arenal Observation Lodge with magnificent views of the volcano. (L)
Day 15 – March 22: Arenal, Costa Rica
We start out today with a journey to the Vida Campesina Organic Farm, where we will interact with daily activities on a Costa Rican farm. We get a chance to leave a part of us in Costa Rica as we sponsor a tree as part of the reforestation project. We’ll enjoy a lesson and a chance to make handmade tortillas, plus an authentic Costa Rican lunch right on the farm. In the afternoon we visit the hot springs that surround the Arenal Volcano complex. Another wonderful evening at the Arenal Observation Lodge, the sounds of the forest make for a good night’s sleep! (B,L,D)
Day 16 – March 23: Arenal, Costa Rica
Enjoy a morning to relax and explore the 1,500 acres around the hotel. There are 800 meters of paved trails in the jungle, bridges, waterfalls and much more. The Observation Lodge is perched on a ridge 1.7 miles from the Arenal Volcano, which makes for many spectacular views. This afternoon we transfer to the capital city, San Jose and a wonderful group dinner before we all say Adios tomorrow. Enjoy your day exploring around the lodge. (B,D)
Day 17 – March 24: San Jose, Costa Rica
Another amazing trip, Miami seems so long ago! After a night in the capital city of San Jose and a good farewell meal together as a group, we depart to the airport this morning for our flights home. Seventeen days, four countries, 7 cities/ports and a journey between two oceans that you will always remember. The Ultimate Panama Canal journey adventure filled with so many discoveries and memories. (B, Meals on Airplane)
