All is in turmoil as the world moves towards war. In Solarno, the spies watch each other and ready their knives, while Myna sees the troops muster at its border and emotions run high as it vows never to be enslaved again. In Collegium, the students argue politics, too late to turn the tide. In the heart of the Empire, new pilots have completed their secretive training, generals are being recalled to service and armies are ready to march. Their Empress, the heir to two worlds, intends to claim her birthright. And nothing – either within the Empire or beyond it – will stand in her way. A conflict is coming, the like of which the insect-kinden have never seen.

Adventures await Rector “Wreck ’em” Sherman. About to turn eighteen, he’s facing ejection from the orphanage that passed for home. He should also choose a trade, but work is scarce in steam-powered Seattle. And Rector has more unconventional plans. He’s started dealing in sap, a yellow narcotic produced by rebels and outlaws within the city’s toxic walled enclave. What’s worse, he’s been sampling his wares. Other problems include being haunted by an old friend with a grudge. The pressure builds until he sneaks behind the wall himself, seeking both (un)gainful employment and excitement. As rumoured, he finds a terrifying host of the hungry undead, and then there’s the monster. Rector’s certain that his attacker wasn’t human, or undead. But he’s going to need more proof than his own addled word to expose it. His new mission becomes a compulsion when others witness the creature’s destructiveness, and give its kind a name.

The Galactic Milieu Series

The series begins with Intervention: A Root Tale to the Galactic Milieu and a Vinculum between it and The Saga of Pliocene Exile. It follows the Remillard family of New Hampshire from the years

immediately after World War II through an increasingly turbulent world, in which various “metapsychic” humans manoeuvre in secret to direct the destiny of the human race. As the Milieu trilogy proper begins with Jack the Bodiless, humankind, led by the Remillard family, is awaiting acceptance into the Galactic Milieu. With Earth’s government being overseen by one of the alien races (Simbiari) ultimately under the authority of the Galactic Milieu, harsh laws (including eugenics laws) are instituted, which fuels feelings of suspicion in both earth’s normal and metapsychic population.

Diamond Mask deals mainly with Dorothea MacDonald on the Scottish world of Caledonia. By the third book Magnificat Marc has matured into a highly capable metapsychic and is regarded as a Paramount. Through manipulated dreams, Marc conceives an idea called ‘Mental Man’ which would create a new

subspecies of Man called Homo [sapiens] summus.

89-year-old Isabelle McAllister has a favour to ask her hairdresser Dorrie Curtis and it’s a big one. Isabelle wants Dorrie, a black single mother in her thirties, to drop everything to drive her from her home in Arlington, Texas, to a funeral in Ohio.

As they drive, Isabelle starts to tell her story: as a willful teen in 1930s Kentucky, she fell deeply in love with Robert Prewitt, the black son of her family’s housekeeper - in a town where blacks weren’t allowed after dark. The tale of their forbidden relationship and its tragic consequences makes it clear that Dorrie and Isabelle are headed for a gathering of the utmost importance, and that the history of Isabelle’s first and greatest love just might help Dorrie find her own way.

With tenderness and searing emotion, Calling Me Home illuminates the hardships, passions and dreams that link women across race, generations and time.

Ariel and Preston are happily married, and Ariel is determined to keep it that way. Preston is recovering from a stroke, but if he begins to piece together memories of the seventy-two hours prior to his stroke, then he will realize Ariel’s hidden secret. Also privy to Ariel’s exploits, Preston’s secretary Michele has set her sights on a position of power. But when Preston’s memories start to resurface, will he be able to forgive and forget? Can Ariel ignore her deepest yearnings for the sake of her marriage? And, though bound to secrecy, will Michele honour her pact with Ariel, or stop at nothing to get what she wants?

PICADORCharged with strangeness and beauty, Hill of Doors is a haunted and

haunting book, where each successive poem seems a shape conjured from the shadows, and where the uncanny is made physically present. The collection sees the return of some familiar members of the Robertson company, including Strindberg - heading, as usual, towards calamity - and the shape-shifter Dionysus. Four loose retellings of stories of the Greek god form pillars for the book, alongside four short Ovid versions. Threaded through these are a series of pieces about the poet’s childhood on the north-east coast, his fascination with the sea and the islands of Scotland. However, the reader will also discover a distinct new note in Robertson’s austere but ravishing poetry: towards the possibility of contentment - a house, a door, a key - finding, at last, a ‘happiness of the hand and heart’. Magisterial in its command and range, indelibly moving and memorable in its speech, Hill of Doors is Robin Robertson’s most powerful book to date.

Roberto Bolaño’s own preferred literary persona was as a poet and Tres is his most inventive and bracing collection.

As the title implies, the collection is composed of three sections. ‘Prose from Autumn in Gerona’, a cinematic series of prose poems, slowly reveals a subtle and emotional tale of unrequited love by presenting each scene, shattering it, and piecing it all back together, over and over again. The second part, ‘The Neochileans’, is a sort of On the Road in verse, which narrates the travels of a young Chilean band on tour traveling north from Chile to Peru and Ecuador. Finally, the collection ends with a series of short poems that take us on ‘A Stroll Through Literature’ reminding us of Bolaño’s masterful ability to walk the line between the comically serious and the seriously comical.

Carol Ann Duffy fell in love with poetry when she was 11; reading and writing it, she learnt to see the world through poems. Now, the Poet Laureate is spearheading Anthologise, a new and exciting poetry anthology competition to encourage the wider reading, appreciation and enjoyment of poetry by school children.

Introduced by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall and Carol Ann Duffy, this anthology is a collection of poems chosen and carefully ordered by the pupils of the winning school. Here you’ll find poetry of all colours, shapes, sizes, smells and ages. They are poems that inspired the pupils, or made them laugh, or cry – most importantly, they are poems the pupils loved.

As late summer steals in and the final pearls of barley are gleaned, a village comes under threat. A trio of outsiders – two men and a dangerously magnetic woman – arrives on the woodland borders and puts up a make-shift camp. That same night, the local manor house is set on fire. Over the course of seven days, Walter Thirsk sees his hamlet unmade: the harvest blackened by smoke and fear, the new arrivals cruelly punished, and his neighbours held captive on suspicion of witchcraft. But something even darker is at the heart of his story, and he will be the only man left to tell it... Told in Jim Crace’s hypnotic prose, Harvest evokes the tragedy of land pillaged and communities scattered, as England’s fields are irrevocably enclosed. Timeless yet singular, mythical yet deeply personal, this beautiful novel of one man and his unnamed village speaks for a way of life lost for ever.

Will Storr was in the tropical north of Australia, excavating fossils with a celebrity creationist, when he asked himself a simple question. Why don’t facts work? It was the start of a journey that would lead Storr all over the world – from Texas to Warsaw to the Outer Hebrides – meeting an extraordinary cast of modern heretics whom he tries his best to understand. He goes on a tour of Holocaust sites with David Irving and a band of neo-Nazis, experiences his own murder during ‘past life regression’ hypnosis, discusses the looming One World Government with iconic climate sceptic Lord Monckton and investigates the tragic life and death of a woman who believed her parents were high priests in a baby-eating cult.

Using a unique mix of highly personal memoir, investigative journalism and the latest research from neuroscience and experimental psychology, Storr reveals how the stories we tell ourselves about the world invisibly shape our beliefs, and how the neurological ‘hero maker’ inside us all can so easily lead to self-deception, toxic partisanship and science denial.

Beth and me wedged tight, jeaned legs pressed against each other. The sound of our own breathing. Before we all stopped believing a tornado, or anything, could touch us, ever. Addy Hanlon and Beth Cassidy are tough, inseparable, invincible. No pair more charismatic or sophisticated. No pair more dangerous. But with the fall term, their new coach arrives and things begin to change. She has plans for the cheer squad: all sleek poise and cool command, the girls are soon entirely in her thrall. Faster, harder, higher, thinner, the stakes raised, their world contracting, they compete to risk – everything. She, meantime, has been crossing a line of her own.

From the brilliant author of The End of Everything, Dare Me is a searing novel about the allure of adulthood and the dark heart of adolescence: the fierce bonds between girls, their bitter rivalries, and their power to transform one another.Dare Me

Well Done God!B. S. Johnson

B. S. Johnson was an English experimental novelist, poet, literary critic, producer of television programmes and film-maker. He is a truly unique British writer, a cult figure whose original and experimental fiction has, since his tragically early death in 1973, been rediscovered by generations of writers and readers. In his delight in innovation the heir to Joyce and Beckett, Johnson played with form, narrative and timescales

across many genres: novels, plays, poetry and memoir.

This is a powerful, heartfelt and moving account of his son’s murder and his fight for justice by Ralph Bulger. James Bulger was just a few weeks shy of his third birthday when, on 12 February 1993, he wandered away from his mum Denise in a shopping mall in Bootle. Grainy images from a security camera showed him trustingly holding the hand of ten-year-old Jon Venables as they walked away. Venables and his friend Robert Thompson murdered James, in a crime that shocked the world. In this haunting book, James’ father Ralph describes how his world fell apart in the days that followed. In his darkest hours he drank to numb the pain, and the stress tore his marriage apart. He tells how he learned to cope with his grief, but the sorrow of James’ death has never left him. He discusses the long legal battle to see justice for his son, as he tried to prevent his killers being released early, and his continuing fight to see them behind bars where they can’t hurt anyone else. Above all, he pays tribute to his son, an adorable, cheeky boy whose bright smile brought joy to his family’s lives.

Life for East End families like Pat’s was always a struggle. She worked for years in Tate & Lyle’s sugar factory while her husband Charlie took on two jobs so their growing family could survive. Until one day Charlie came home with a brilliant idea - they should take over The Rising Sun pub in Bromley-by-Bow. In this charming memoir Pat describes her years as a pub landlady and vividly evokes the East End community she served in the 1960s, the extraordinary characters she encountered and the changes that swept through society at that time. She also reveals why she and Charlie moved to Essex, and what it felt like to become a star of The Only Way is Essex in her seventies.

Set in the haunting and barren landscape of a new ice age, After The Snow is the story of fifteen-year-old Willo, a ‘straggler’ kid who loses his family in the opening pages. Completely alone, he is immediately flung into an icy journey of survival, adventure, friendship and self-discovery - with only the dog spirit inside his head to guide him. Meanwhile, across Britain, outlawed followers of survivalist John Blovyn are planning an escape to the fabled Islands talked of in a revolutionary book... Raw, compelling and unforgettable - this powerfully voiced novel is a young adult classic in the making.

‘Crockett has created a voice that gets inside you... The story Crockett tells is a deeply human one of survival and self-discovery. After The Snow is a

coming-of-age novel, first and foremost - a brutal, tough and sometimes truly transcendent one.’

Knock! Knock! What’s that? Open the door . . . It’s a spotty cat!

Where is that special person Mum and Dad promised to bring home? Trading cards are the new big thing and all the coolest mice are collecting them - even President Wensley Dale! No wonder, when all the most famous musicians in Mouseland are featured on the cards. But it seems that one mouse is desperate to get hold of the full set, and he’ll do whatever it takes: buy, swap, borrow or . . . steal? When a wave of break-ins hits Mouseland, Rastamouse comes up with a risky plan to catch the thief, setting a trap in the Museum of Music in the dead of night. The bait? A super-rare Toots trading card . . .

The Cool Car Competition is just around the corner, and everyone is busy getting their cars looking as wicked as possible. There’s just one problem: things keep disappearing in a puff of smoke! Well, a puff of dirty exhaust fumes from a rusty brown car . . . But what could the thief want with cool shiny wheels and pots of paint from the orphanage? Rastamouse has a hunch - and a cunning plan to prove it. But with the Cool Car Competition looming, the race is on to bring the culprit to justice before it’s too late!

In today’s world, where religious divides and cultural differences so often have tragic consequences, a sound understanding of the belief systems and practices of other peoples and cultures is essential. The four books in the World Faiths series: Christianity; Hinduism and Other Eastern

Religions; Islam and Judaism, offer a simple and child-friendly introduction to religion around the world. The history and origins of each religion are explained, along with information about their calendar and festivals; places of worship; religious practices and their place in modern society.

Religious artwork from through the ages demonstrates how each religion has been practised, and has evolved, throughout history, while dynamic photographs show how modern worship is celebrated today. Solid facts, and text from an expert author, make World Faiths an invaluable

resource for religious education.

The Australian War Memorial in Canberra is one of the world’s most significant collections of military history. Originally conceived during the turbulent years of the First World War, it was opened in 1941 and has grown to become one of the most important symbols of national identity, visited by over 800,000 visitors a year. Australian War Memorial tells the story of the Memorial and the National Collection, taking readers behind the scenes and uncovering many items not on public display. From the battlefields of Europe to peacekeeping operations and the current conflicts in the Middle East, the artefacts of almost a century of collecting are brought to life through the rich personal stories behind them. Written by a team of Memorial experts with specially commissioned photography, Australian War Memorial is a commemoration to all those who have served Australia and a tribute to the enduring qualities that forged its identity.
