Ner Dabu

Ner Dabu, current Board Member and the First

President of PAMET-IN

Member Profile: Ner Dabu Interviewed by Nellie Gallardo

Ner Dabu’s dreams and aspi-rations were no different from many who were in college during the ‘60s in the Philip-pines - become an M.D. But his parents told him that the only way for that to happen was for his 2 brothers to post-pone going to college. He thought of nursing school, but was told by his high school counselor that “nursing is for girls”. His counselor instead suggested the emerging and very promising science of Laboratory Medicine. So after graduating from Manuel L. Quezon High School in 1962, he enrolled at Far Eastern Uni-versity to become a Medical Technologist. After finishing his BSMT in 1967, he was offered a job at the Olongapo Dept. of Health where he worked for 2 years. His income was not enough to help send his brothers to college.

Lady Luck soon smiled at him when, one day, he met a for-mer college classmate who had just arrived from New Jersey as an exchange student. His classmate gave him a list of hospitals that were sponsoring pre-qualified Med. Tech. graduates from FEU. He ap-plied to 8 hospitals and vowed to accept the first one to admit him. Hence in 1971, he came to the US to work at the Meth-odist Hospitals of Central Illi-nois in Peoria. At last he could help send his 6 siblings to col-lege. That resolve became an obsession with the untimely demise of his father. He thanks God everyday for the realiza-tion of that obsession.

From Peoria, he worked as Blood Banker at the Commu-

nity Hospital of Roanoke Val-ley, in Virginia; then went to Mercy Hospital in Gary, IN from 1972-86; and finally to St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart, IN where he became an Evening Chief Technologist and from where he retired in February 2, 2007. He now works as PRN/Registry Tech-nologist at Community Health-care System.

One of the most inspiring and vindicating moments of his career happened 3 months after he started working at St. Mary’s. He was offered the Evening Shift Supervisory position vacated by Rudy Ban-zon. 2 days after the offer was made, he overheard the Chem-istry Director and the Coordi-nator of the School of Medical Technology at St. Mary’s hav-ing a disagreement over his promotion. The Coordinator was vehemently against it. Reason? Ner was not a gradu-ate of the St. Mary’s School of Medical Technology! Con-fronting the issue, he politely asked for a private meeting with the Coordinator wherein he asked her point blank why she was against his promotion. She, at first, denied her opposi-tion but after being told of what he overheard, she said the Laboratory always promotes its graduates. He then went on to ask if she, herself, was a gradu-ate of the School considering the good job she was doing teaching and running it. She said she was not. Ner then went on to point out how she is a good example of the fact that anyone can do a good job even if one came from a different school. From then on they

became good friends. This episode in Ner’s career taught him that problems in the work place can be solved quickly when approached with respect and honesty. RESPECT be-came his mantra at work. As proof of that, in February 2000 when the selection category was Respect, he was recog-nized by his peers who voted him SMMC Employee of the Month. He received the award based on a 90% vote (the high-est percentage ever received ) from the other heads, managers & supervisors of other depart-ments. He is still very proud of the award.

Ner’s career and personal life are interestingly entwined. Ner and his wife, Annie Rectitud, met at the US Embassy in Ma-nila (applying for US visas?); then were classmates in Peoria, IL; and later ended up working together for Mercy Hospital in Gary, IN. They got married in October 13, 1973 at the St. Joseph, the Worker Catholic Church in Gary. The have 3 children: Earl Anthony (33); Jeffrey Allen (29) and Melissa Anne (22). From Prado, Lubao, Pampanga where Ner was born to Valparaiso, IN where they currently reside, Ner has come a long, long way following his dreams and catch his rising star.

His advice to young Med. Techs? Work hard and be smart. Pursue a higher level of education that will enable you to compete for positions not only in the Laboratory but in the entire health system. There is no limit to what one can achieve when willing to take risks and challenges.

of PAMET-IN members, and to find new venues to serve the Indi-ana communities as a way to give back to the city, state and country, we now call home.

In her acceptance speech, Lauren acknowledged the high bar set by the previous administration and vowed to “move forward and meet new challenges”, harnessing the

unique strengths and talents of PAMET-IN members. Together as a team, she hopes to face the chal-lenges ahead and convert them into opportunities that will eventually translate into productive goals and projects that PAMET-IN will ac-complish.

In her inspiring keynote address, Esther Madamba lauded the pio-neers of PAMET-IN for the founda-

tions they laid, the vision they set to pursue and the mission they planned to accomplish. She con-gratulated the past and present offi-cers and members for making PAMET-IN what it is today — an “exemplary model worthy of emulation”.

in the Philippines is sound. It is in technology where other countries leave the Philippines behind. He currently resides in East Chicago, IN. The biggest problems he faced when he first got here were being away from his parents and 3 sib-lings and trying to adjust to the new culture and environment.

Now that he has acclimatized and working in a US hospital, he rel-ishes the advantage of using top-of-the-line instruments and equipments in the laboratory. He also has to adjust working under much stricter rules and regulations governing specimen handling and preserva-tion, quality control and quality assurance in laboratory testing, all of which are geared towards im-proved patient care and satisfaction. He laments though the high cost of using disposables — gloves, test tubes, lab gowns etc. Coming from a Third world country, he is acutely aware of the huge waste of re-sources due to expiring unused reagents and blood products.

Like other migrants who came

before him, he immediately realized that life in the US is far from perfect and not as easy as it seems when viewed from a distance across the Pacific Ocean. He has realized that to have the good life, one must work harder.

It did not take long for James to adjust. He counts on the support of a relatively big group of Filipinos in the NW Indiana area. Apart from his job, James is currently PAMET-IN’s Vice President for NW Indiana, a testament of the confidence that his compatriots has for him. Asked what role PAMET-IN can play in attract-ing more Med Techs to the US, he said that giving the organization wider exposure in the me-dia and in publications would help.

His advice to future re-cruits? Develop a good work ethic. Uphold the well-known virtue of Fili-pinos in the US - hard workers.

Tip to young ladies: James is single.

Faced by Laboratory manpower shortage here in the US, Ethel Urbi, the Regional Director of Laborato-ries for Community Healthcare System, decided to go on a recruit-ing trip to the Philippines. One of her first recruits was James Nuguid, a BSMT Class 2000 of the University of Santo Tomas in Ma-nila. He also has a BSN degree.

James, who hails from Valenzuela City (used to be part of the province of Bulacan), is the eldest of 4 chil-dren born to Johnny and Linda Nuguid. He was interviewed in the Philippines in February 5, 2006 and after about a year of processing, came to the US in 2007. Sponsored by St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, Indiana, he is on his sec-ond year working in the Laboratory as a Generalist. In addition to his BSMT degree and work experience in the Philippines, he was required to take the American Medical Tech-nologist (AMT) Test and the Eng-lish Proficiency Test (IELTS) in order to qualify for a working visa. James opines that the theoretical aspect of the education he received

An Evening to Remember by Alvin Limiac

“We’re having a wonderful time” exclaimed Theresa Brnicky who was seated with my wife, Jennifer, and me during PAMET-IN’s 6th Bien-nial Induction & Dinner Dance on Saturday, October 18, 2008. The program was kicked off at 7 pm by me, serving as master of ceremonies, followed by the singing of the Star Spangled Banner led by Theresa Brnicky and the Philippine National Anthem led by Bea Ymalay.

Shortly thereafter, Angele Miguel, our outgoing Presi-dent, welcomed everyone and reflected on the accomplish-ments of PAMET-IN under her leadership. Following the wel-come address, Susan Salenda led the invocation after which dinner was served. During dinner, a photo montage

created by Elvie Miguel was shown highlighting the many activities officers and members participated in the past 2 years.

Among our special guests was Dan Dominguez, Vice Presi-dent of PAMET-USA and President of PAMET-Northern California, who introduced our Guest Speaker, Esther Madamba, the current Presi-dent of PAMET-USA. Ms. Madamba energized us all with her address and concluded by inducting the 2009-2010 Offi-cers. Of note was the memora-ble performance by the newly inducted officers who sere-naded us all with the song If we Hold on Together. Poignant was the sequential lighting of candles signifying our need for each other to be successful in our collective endeavors.

The serenade was immediately followed by the President’s address. Lauren Tanedo, newly inducted President of PAMET-IN thanked our many distinguished guests and pro-ceeded to outline the goals and activities that our organization will embark upon through her tenure. Ms. Tanedo motivated us all with her contagious en-thusiasm and focus.

Awards were presented to Susan Salenda for her Out-standing Service to PAMET-IN thru the newsletter and to Lauren Tanedo for her crea-tive talents in conceptualizing and putting together the Booth Exhibit that won 1st Place dur-ing the PAMET National Con-vention in Texas.

Dancing followed, and dance we did. The evening concluded with Filipino treats and snacks prepared by the officers and members of PAMET-IN for everyone to enjoy.

On the day of the concert, the group met at Lauren Tanedo’s house and car-pooled to Veri-zon Center. The Music Center was jampacked. It was heart warming to see so many Filipi-nos among the concertgoers. The PAMET-IN group was “well equipped” with blankets and “banig” to sit on; large bags of popcorn and Dingdong Mix Nuts to munch on. The group even brought a Philip-pine Flag to display and wave to show their pride. Unfortu-nately, the case of bottled wa-ter they brought was confis-cated at the gate. Still, they had a wonderful time laughing, “kuwentuhan”, singing-along

Concert?..... When?.... Sure, sama kami! This was the en-thusiastic response from PAMET-IN members to the invitation to the “Journey” concert held at Verizon Music Center last September 10, 2008.

When Tony Ricafort alerted everyone that the singing group “Journey” was coming to perform in Indianapolis and volunteered to buy tickets, everyone joined in. Never mind that it was on the middle of the week. Everyone was excited to watch and show support to a “kababayan”, Arnel Pineda, the lead vocalist of the band.

to the familiar songs of the band. Arnel Pineda was su-perb! He’s got a very nice voice and had so much energy singing and dancing for 2 hours of concert entertainment. Fantastic!!! The group was so proud of him.

After the concert, the Ricaforts hosted dinner at their home. Filipino dinner at midnight was excellent at the very warm and ever hospitable dinner table of Tony and Tina. The spread? Tina’s best cooking including her well-loved dessert treats, carioca, pichi-pichi.

It was a wonderful, stress-relieving night of entertain-ment ! Thanks to Tony and Tina for the good time! Kudos!

Greetings to all my colleagues!

PAMET-IN starts a new term, 2009-2010 with even greater enthusiasm and strength of purpose. The year started with the commitment to do prayer meetings at St. Augustine Home for the Aged as a means to socially and spiritually interact with the residents. The first one was held January 10 and was hosted by Nati Dumaual. A rosary prayer at the chapel was followed by a light meal and a social hour. A cash donation was also given to the Little Sisters of the Poor who manage St. Augustine. Right after the socials, we seized the opportunity to hold our first official meeting of the year. The second prayer meeting was hosted by Al & Kathy Autajay

on February 7.

Aside from the above commitment, PAMET-IN will devote its time and efforts to the following activities during 2009.

Asian Services of Indiana, Inc. was formed in October 2004 by a group of individuals who had the passion to serve the needs of underserved Asian American residents and Asian migrants and refugees who come and settle in Central Indiana. This organization helps to enhance the quality of life of these people by improving their access to healthcare and social services. They facilitate

PAMET-IN was in charge of regis-tering participants, providing glu-cose screenings, and distributing health information sheets with some freebies donated by Clarian Health. PNA-IN performed the BP and BMI checks and did verbal health teachings. There were a total of 61 participants - 38 Asians, 18 Cauca-sians, 2 African- Americans, 2 His-panics and 2 other nationalities.

On September 20, 2008, the 2 groups once again teamed up to provide the same services during the Philippine Festival held at the St. Michael Parish Life Center where 55 participants - 47 Asians, 7 Caucasians, and 1 African-American - benefited from the ser-vices.

On October 25, 2008 , the 2 again did wellness screenings a Adams Mark Hotel during the Nettworth Financial Health Fair. Where 22 participants were screened. All 3 events were sponsored by Clarian Health and Roche Diagnostics.

PAMET-IN in partnership with the Philippine Nurses Association-IN (PNA-IN) jumpstarted a new pro-ject to promote a healthier lifestyle in the community thru wellness screenings, verbal health teachings and printed health information. Both organizations conducted 3 wellness screenings in 2008. The first one was held at Garfield Park during the first Asian Festival on May 10, 2008. The wellness screen-ings included blood pressure (BP)

2008 Spring/Fall Seminars Well-Attended P A G E 7 V O L U M E 7 , I S S U E 1

As one of the benefits of being a PAMET-IN member, 2 opportuni-ties for continuing education is annually offered.

The Spring seminar was held at St. Mary Medical Center on April 19,

2008. Hosted by NW-Indiana to benefit those in that area, the seminar covered Blood Bank Cases discussed by Arist Sgouroudis, MT(ASCP),SBB and Site

Director; Equivalent QC discussed by Helen Torres, MT(ASCP), MS and Chemistry Supervisor; and Top-ics in Coagulation discussed by Heidi Norbrook, MD and Co-Medical Director.

At the Fall Seminar that took place

in the morning of the Induction Ball on October 18, 2008 at the Sheraton Indianapolis Hotel, Deborah Blue, MD, MT(ASCP) and Assistant Pro-fessor of the IU School of Medicine talked about Clinical Applications of Molecular Diagnostics; Dan Follas, MS, XENO Diagnostics, LLC spoke on Adenopectin: A Potential New Biomarker; and Steven Gregurek, MD and Assistant Medical Director of the CPL Blood Bank discussed TRALI (Transfusion Related Acute Lung Injury). Both seminars were well-attended

Maricel C. Salvante came with her husband Che and their young son, Antonio Che. Maricel graduated from Siliman University in 2003 and previously worked at the Dumaguete Medical Laboratory.

Easter Claire S. Don graduated from Colegio de San Agustin in Bacolod City, BSMT Class 2003. She worked at the Doctor’s Hospi-tal in Bacolod from 2006 to 2008.

Don Abel P. Guevarra of Pam-panga, came with his wife, Carren, and their little son, Raphael. Don is a BSMT Class ‘98 graduate of UST, and like Cherrie, also worked as a generalist at the UST Hospital from 1999-2008.

Cherrie and Maricel will be as-signed at the St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart while Easter and

Don will be working at St. Catherine Hospital.

In 2007, Jude Jeric S. Salanio and James T. Nuguid arrived here as the first batch of Ethel’s recruits. Jude, a 1989 BSMT graduate of the Univer-sity of San Agustin came with his wife, Ghelani, a BSMT ’93 graduate of UST, and their 2 children, Ghen-ella Marie and Jude Paolo. Jude works at St. Catherine while Ghelani works at Methodist Hospital in Gary. On the other hand, James works at St. Catherine.

Highlight of the Christmas/Welcome/Reunion party was the gift giving from PAMET-IN to the new Hoo-siers. Everyone en-joyed the sumptuous spread that included favorites like kare-kare, pancit, dinuguan, arroz caldo, pochero and much more. It was indeed a Merry First Christmas in Indiana !

Hosting a Christmas Dinner, Ethel Urbi, together with her sister, Jackie Vivo, opened their home in Merrill-ville, IN on December 21, 2008 to welcome to the Hoosier State the newly recruited Medical Technolo-gists from the Philippines. 4 Med Techs and their families recently arrived and are now undergoing their Orientation Training at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago and at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart, IN.

Also on hand to welcome and meet the new recruits were the PAMET-IN officers and members. Motoring from Indianapolis were Lauren Tanedo, President, together with Angele & Elvie Miguel, Tony Rica-fort and Lina Ferrer. NW-Indiana was represented by Rudy & Evelyn Banzon; Cora and Andy Manahan, Elsa Transfiguracion, Ner & Annie Dabu.

The St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) of Indianapolis operates the largest Food Pantry in the Midwest, serving an average of 2800 households per week , with an all-volunteer staff. It provides human services to the poor, the needy, and the suffering on a di-rect person-to-person basis and through a spectrum of programs. Its mission is to break the cycle of pov-erty and homelessness among the disadvantaged. SVdP is a Catholic organization helping to serve the local community without regard to faith affiliation, race or gender orientation. It is open to all volunteers who wish to live their faith by loving and serv-ing their neighbors, and promote hu-man dignity and integrity.

Last May 17, 2008, PAMET-IN vol-unteered to donate their time to the Food Pantry. The group included

PAMET-IN once again teamed up with the Barangay Club of Indiana to help bring focus to the uniquely di-verse ethnic and cultural mix in Cen-tral Indiana during the 2008 Interna-tional Festival held November 20-23 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. PAMET-IN officers and members, namely Nati Dumaual, Fred and Nellie Gallardo, Angele Miguel, Elvie Miguel and Lauren Tanedo donated their time and effort to help showcase the Filipino culture at the Festival. Every year, the Barangay Club sets up a cultural booth to showcase the Phil-ippines. Aside from vicarious experi-ence that visitors get from viewing the exhibits displayed, the booth also gives them the opportunity to ask questions about the Philippines, its people, customs and traditions. It is a cultural immersion that young stu-dents as well as families who usually go to the Festival can enjoy.
