Airport Tours

PAPA members have been providing guided airport tours by requestfrom the airport management office. On a recent tour, the VernonHills Cub Scouts, Pack 44, toured the airport with a distinguished, long time PAPA member. Here’s what he said about these scouts:

These Cub Scouts were a pleasure. Well mannered and reallyinterested in the tour. Even though we were too late for the PWKtower, because of the evening rush hour traffic, it was well receivedby the children and their parents. Tour was about 1-1/2 hours, somewhat shorter than when we visit the tower. Instead we allpiled into the airport van and are able to listen to the tower whileI explained that facet of aircraft control to everyone.

This tour also included a stop in the guide’s personal aircraft, where, “Don’t touch anything,” was somewhat overlooked.

Let’s Wing ItMore Places to Go and Things to Do! By Ray Klaus The week of June 16th, we flew to Popular Grove Airport(C77). As you probably know, AIRMOTIVE the FBO, has a full-service aircraft engine overhaul and repair shop. If you geta chance, schedule a tour - especially if your engine is duefor major overhaul. You will be amazed at the detail andprecision that goes into the rebuilding process. While there, be sure to visit the “Vintage Wings & WheelsMuseum. It is a walk back in time to the airfields of the1920s and 30s. The museum is located adjacent to the airportwith taxiway access. If you are driving, it is north of BelvidereRoad off Route 76. They have a great library of old aviationmagazines from that period. You can check theirwebsite www.wingsandwheelsmuseum.org for a schedule ofevents. On the return to home base, we stopped at Dacy Airport(0C0), and also Galt Airport (10C). As you may recall, theDacy family members were highly regarded airshowperformers. The flight office has a lot of memorabilia postedon the walls. The office has seen better days, but the sodrunway is well maintained. There weren’t any people aroundto visit with that week day. No doubt weekends are wellattended. Galt Airport (10C) is a charming place with a large populationof active aviation people gathering regularly for the fun ofit. The have a Hawaiian Luau Pig Roast scheduled for June28th this year, and probably have it on the calendar forY2009 as well. While there, Tom Hoppe taxiied up in hisAmerican Champion Citabria Aurora. Tom was a US AirforceVietnam aviator, then became a contract helicopter pilotpicking-up downed airman in Laos, and retired as a captainwith TWA a few years ago. He is based at Galt, and his historyis posted on the airport’s “Wall of Fame” along with a wholebunch of others. The week of June 23rd found Doc Eberhardt and I “winging-it” to Westosha (W110), home to Westosha Flying Club. Theyalso appear to manage the airport. For some reason oranother, I never visited there before. I was impressed withthe friendly personality and activity. Judging from theirmonthly newsletter, the club has an active and growingmembership - adding six new members in May, plus somenew solos and IFR and Private pilot completions. The initiationfee is a modest $165, plus $55 monthly dues. The Cessna 152rental is at $54, and the C172 at $69. Quite reasonable. East Troy Airport (57C), was the next destination. They haveit all: skydiving, ultralight, recreational, light sport, conventional and helicopter training. Also, they boast thenewest, nicest, friendliest maintenance facility in the areaserving piston and turbine owners, as well as light sport andexperimental aircraft owners. They are a factory certifiedRotax repair station. More explorations to come. Let’s keep flying safe, fun andaffordable. Editor - Please see the classified ads for Ray’s shared ownership

plan. Ray Klaus, a PAPA member, is a CFIA-II-MEL and has received

the designation of Master Instructor from the National Association

of Flight Instructors and has been awarded the FAA Wright Brothers

Master Pilot Award. Ray is a sport aviation enthusiast.

The following email was received as thanks for the tour:

Dear Howard, It has been a great opportunity for Vernon Hills Cub Scouts Pack

44 to visit Chicago Executive Airport on May 23. Thank you so

much for your time and willingness to show and tell how airport

operates and let scouts visit your airplane. Boys were really excited with this trip. We will be looking for your

picture at the Smithsonian Institution, once we get there for a

trip. In the following emails I will send pictures from this wonderful

visit. With Best Regards,

Derek Zarzeczny

Waukegan and Kenosha Pilots Join the

PAPA Lunchwaffe

For A Great Outing at East TroyBy Al Riley

Winds 280 at 17 gusting to 23 knots, greeted six planes andfifteen pilots arriving at East Troy on a recent Saturday. Pilotsfrom Waukegan and Kenosha joined the PAPA Lunchwaffe foran epicurean delight at the wonderful Roma Italianrestaurant. Lesser pilots probably could not have handledthe stiff winds.

Howard Levinson, having recently achieved an Air TransportPilot rating, with the cool hand of an astronaut, brought hisbeautiful Cessna 421 in on a shallow approach to runway 26at 100 knots warning in advance that the East Troy runwaydrops eighteen feet from the threshold to touchdown.

“Don’t be alarmed if the runway descends faster than theplane,” he cautioned his passengers. “We’ll be ok.” Crunch. The wheels firmly contacted the runway. The plane slowedto taxi speed well in advance of the turnoff. Everyone arrivedsafely.

Dick and Gail Wise, long time friends of Ray Dash and HowardLevinson, hosted the gathering, provided extra transportation

to the restaurant and later in the day treated Jack Sheridan,Bill Knauss, Ray Dash and Ron Solomon to a pontoon boat rideon Lake Beulah.

The food was great and the conversation lively. Tall tales aboutgetting through customs, overcoming medical roadblocks, pastand future flights renewed and strengthened friendships. Thejoy of flying with old and new friends warmed the conversation.

PAPA Safety and Programming Chairman Jack Sheridan, theproud owner of a Cessna 140, has recently brought togetherWaukegan, Kenosha and Palwaukee pilots with his recentlyorganized event at the Knauss Auto Museum where PAPAmember Clyde Ericson presented a wonderful power-pointpresentation on sea-plane flying. The East Troy event was acontinuation of that successful effort to encourage thecamaraderie experienced on this fantastic day.

PAPA has long brought together its intrepid pilot membersfor these great flying experiences. The Saturday Lunchwaffeexpeditions generally start at 9:30 a.m. with breakfast at theRadisson hotel. Madeleine Monaco with her cell phonegenerously receives calls from stragglers hoping to join inthe planned escapades and has frequently helped arrangethe transportation and other details that have made theseoutings such great successes. Extra seats are often available. All pilots and want-to-be pilots are welcome at these informalbut rewarding outings.

Left to right: Armand Bendersky, Al Riley, Barry Axelrod, Harriet Levinson, Howard Levinson, Dick Wise, Ron Solomon, Ray Dash, Bill

Knauss, Jack Sheridan, Jim Loerzel, Madeleine Monaco, Ray Granzow, and Glen Weaver.

FSS Tip of the Week:

Effectively Using TIBS

Want a quick picture of the weather and wind before you

get a preflight briefing? Flight service offers the

transcribed information briefing service (TIBS)—a

computer-generated recording of METARs, TAFs, winds

and temperatures aloft, airspace procedures, and special

announcements. To access TIBS, call 877/4TIBS-WX or 800/

WX-BRIEF, Option 2. You will be prompted for your state

and TIBS area. Use Lockheed Martin’s online TIBS map to

locate your area. For more FSS tips, take the AOPA Air

Safety Foundation’s online minicourse, A Pilot’s Guide to

Flight Service, and download AOPA’s quick reference card

to carry in your flight bag.
