President’s Message 2012-2013 has been a year of change for PALS. After 18 years, Sandra Johnston retired from PALS. We wish to thank Sandra for her years of dedication and wish her the very best.

With Sandra’s retirement, we commenced recruitment of a new Executive Director and we are extremely pleased to announce the appointment of Diana Segboer. Diana brings a wealth of experience from the non-profit world, having been the Executive Director of Inn from the Cold from 2004 through 2009. It was only after her arrival that Inn from the Cold really took off and became the amazing refuge for the homeless that it is today. While she was there, she took a small three person staff to a 40-plus person office and also headed up a major capital fundraising project that enabled the organization to buy its own (current) building. She has also served as an Exec-utive Director with a local Wildlife Foun-dation and as a Program Director for Our Lady Queen of Peace Ranch, a recrea-tional facility whose mandate is to pro-vide a free outdoor recreational experi-ence for children with life challenges. Diana is an animal lover extraordinaire (she does fostering for a local rescue organization and has her own in-house pets), and is an extremely strong advo-cate in the value of animal use for therapeutic purposes; hence a perfect fit for PALS and our programs. Please join us in welcoming Diana to the PALS family! The PALS board is excited about this time of re-energization and new lead-ership.

Our Facebook page has seen growth in viewership – a big thank you to Danelle Wettstein for your efforts in keeping our page updated with PALS stories and her clever pet tid-bits!

We saw sustainment in our programs and several new spe-cial visits were added, some of note include a love-ly visit on Valentine’s Day at the TELUS Spark Science Centre and a highly visible visit with the Children’s Enrichment Program at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in April. It was unfortu-nate to see our partnership conclude with the Calgary Po-lice Service and their drug awareness program.

We continued to maintain a high profile in the community with participation in several public events including the Hull

Stampede Breakfast and the Alberta Children’s Hospital Stampede Parade. We also received great PR this year with three media profiles – our very own Joan was quoted in the Metro newspaper on the benefits of pet therapy, an audio clip on CBC radio and this fabulous clip on CBC news high-lighting our Story PALS partnership with the Calgary Public Library.

Our volunteers returned to the Art Market in November, our most recognizable PR event of the year – the artisans and patrons welcome us back each year! We were back at the new CORE for Dogs and Cats in the Mall, we saw an increase ticket sales and donations over the previous years. PALS would like to extend our deepest appreciation to the Art Market, CORE, WestJet for the travel voucher, BFL In-surance for the donation of the Ipad Mini and an anony-mous volunteer for the hand-made quilt. We would also like to thank the volunteers and the pets who continue to

shine in their capacity as warm fuzzy sales people.

The 2nd annual Pawsitively Portraits event in conjunction with Pawsitively Natural Dog Daycare & Training Acade-my and Riverwood Photography was a success, raising over $1300 for PALS. Thank you to Eric Leung and Sean Phil-

lips, owners of these two businesses for supporting PALS once again with this photo fundraiser.

We created an unique partnership with the Promise Book – a local organization promoting the person and animal bond where a portion of sales of their books, note pads, post-it notes and other custom products goes back to PALS.

Volunteers continue to be the most important and valued part of the organization. They unselfishly give the time and dedication needed to continue offering the unique and val-uable service we provide to the community. Without the efforts of our volunteers, PALS would not be able to oper-ate and function, so the biggest thanks goes out to all of our outstanding volunteers!!

On behalf of the directors of PALS, I would also like to ex-press my appreciation to the PALS staff - Sandra, Joan, Madison and now Diana for their unsurpassed dedication to our program.

Holly Yaschuk, PALS President

‘The principal came in and was amazed at how calm the children were, how much fun they had with the dogs, One boy in particular, who was sick the first time the dogs came in January and the second time had sat facing away from them in his seat, was rolling around on the floor with Abby while she licked his face and he laughed. It was a huge improvement that shocked our principal.’

‘Monique, our host for Story PALS, commented on a grade three participant’s awe at being in the presence of a very attentive basset. It was obvious that she had never been near a dog before and her English skills were very limited. Her little sister was invited to join in the reading session and every now and then she would gather enough courage to reach out and stroke its head. The mom explained that they had never been near a dog before. The dog owner coached the reader through her first book and when she started the second book, she was holding it like a storyteller so Joey the dog could see the pictures. The smile on the young girl’s face as she left the CLLC was radiant.’
