ALL ABOUT COPTIC STITCHInstructor: Jamila Rufaro, [email protected]: NoneBecome acquainted with variations of Coptic stitch while creating three books over this two evening course. Coptic stitch is a sewn binding method that creates an exposed spine that lays open flat. Introduced during the fourth century in Egypt by followers of the Christian Coptic church, various forms of this stitching technique have remained popular. Using demonstration, examples, diagrams and a lot of individual attention, students are guided through the creation of three handmade books. There is a $20.00 materials fee payable to the instructor. MAKING PASTE PAPERSInstructor: Jamila Rufaro, [email protected]: NoneCreate beautiful patterns on mixed media paper. Learn techniques for making traditional and modern patterns. The translucent quality of the paste allows for the process to be repeated many times on the same paper to achieve multiple layers of color and rich three-dimensional patterns. Book-binders of old and of late mix their leftover paste with pigment to make beautiful patterned papers. Traditionally used as endpapers in books, today paste paper is used in a variety of paper crafts, including collage, mixed media and book making.
