Meta Elements Suggestion

Creating the proper meta information for a web page is very important if that page is going to get ranked in the search results. In this post, we will touch on the 3 major types of meta elements: Title Tags, Meta Descriptions and Meta Keywords.

Title Tags are the single most important part of the meta element family. They carry the most weight in the algorithm and should be kept within 70 characters.

Meta Descriptions are not used in SEO rankings, but help in user conversion because they can entice someone to click on your listing in the search engine results page. Keep the length around 150-170 characters.

Meta Keywords are for the most part, no longer a ranking factor within SEO.

Header(H1/H2)

HTML header tags are used within web design and SEO to organize/explain a web page’s structure within the code of that page. It gives the search engine indexing program (spider/crawler) a clearly defined hierarchical layout of what the page is mainly about (via the <H1>) and sub sections (<H2>, – <H6>).

Each web page should only have one <H1>. Think of it as the page’s title (however, do not confuse this with the Title Tag).

Canonical Issue

What are Canonical Issues?

Canonical issues can basically be defined as multiple URLs with the same content. They can negatively impact SEO because the search engines have not evolved (yet) to fully understand them.

Examples: http://www.palmettosoft.com/ (World Wide Web version) http://palmettosoft.com/ (non World Wide Web version)

The above URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) could have the same content and the search engines can (and usually will) penalize your website for having duplicate content. For example, the search engines will typically see the http://www.palmettosoft.com/ and http://palmettosoft.com/ as two different websites with the same content. You can solve this problem by using a 301 Redirect with a .htaccess file.

Anchor Text Linking

Anchor text refers the words that make up a link (and when you place your mouse over the phrase, it turns into a pointing hand). For example, in the sentence, “SEO Service in Florida, South Carolina“ is anchor text for the link.

Customized 404 Error

The most common reason for a 404 error is that somebody types a URL incorrectly. For example: desiredsite.com/things/whatilyke, yet it should bedesiredsite.com/things/whatilike. In this regard, the 404 error page lets them know they are on the correct site and it can also provide a link which directs the user back to your home page. This simple 404 page can in many times, stop somebody from leaving your site in frustration, and staying in an effort to further navigate your website.

Robots.txt

Sometimes, there may be places on your website where you do not want the content to be indexed. A great tool to use for these areas is the robots.txt file in your website code. For example, you could have a unique customer specific section which is not password protected and this page is not found in your site’s navigation. While this area may not be sensitive information, you also don’t want the public to see it either. By using the robots.txt file, you essentially tell the engines: “do not index this page.”

XML Sitemap

Sitemaps (XML code) are an important protocol feature that can be installed on a website by a developer. They allow the search engines and/or public to understand things like: When the site was last updated, how many pages are in the site, page relation to each other, etc.

Broken Link Checking

A broken link, which is also called a dead link, points to a file or page that either does not exist or does not exist in that location. The page might not be where you think it should be for various reasons. It could have been moved or you may not have permission to view it. When your site has links that are broken, visitors may become irritated and lose patience when trying to navigate the site. For that Fix all broken links as soon as you’re aware of it
