Palmers Green had two cinemas in the early 20th century. The larger of the

cinemas was The Palmadium which opened on Christmas Eve in 1920. The

building was part of a complex which included some shops and a billiard hall.

A full page advert was placed in the Palmers Green Gazette announcing the

grand opening. The cinema had a large orchestra pit, a pipe organ, a gallery,

14 boxes and seated around 2500 people. At the time it was built it was one of

the largest state of the art cinemas in London.

The cinema originally opened as a silent cinema with a live orchestra but in

1927 the talkies arrived. The Palmadium was taken over by the

Denman/Gaumont Theatre chain in 1928. In 1951 it was renamed Gaumont

but this only lasted another 10 years before it closed down in 1961.

Around 1961 the building was demolished and replaced with a Tesco

supermarket and some extra smaller shops. Tesco’s stayed in the building

for about 40 years and is now the site of Store 21. The other smaller shops

include Kodak Express, William Hill and G Mantella Jewellers.

My son Oliver has attended Hazelwood PrimarySchool for the past 3 years and during that time Ihave been an active member of HPSAHazelwood Schools PTA. Our Parent-TeacherAssociation is a grass rootsorganisation that brings parents andstaff together so we can worktowards improving the lives andeducation of pupils at Hazelwood.HPSA are best known for our fundraising work, but we have a usefulsocial function too. Fund raisingevents provide an opportunity for parents, staff,pupils and the community to get together.
