The school-side attention signal is called “Give me Five.” The purpose of a school-wide attention signal is to instill consistency in the way teachers and administrators gain students’ attention. The signal is designed to be used in any school setting (i.e. classroom, hallways, cafeteria and courtyard). The authority figure simply raises their arm in the air with palm facing away from body and says “Give me five”. The students are to respond with the same arm motion.

Million Minute Marathon

Million Minute Marathon Today in 6th period you received your Million Minute Marathon form. You need to read the directions on the form and make sure an adult initials next to each entry that you actually read the number of minutes listed on the form. On Fridays, you will bring your completed form to lunch to receive a reward for reading at least 200 minutes. Then during 6th period a drawing will be held using the names of students who submitted a form during lunch. The winner of the drawing will receive a Target gift card! Today we added many minutes to our thermometer in the cafeteria!

What FCAT Reading is All About Location: 1-219 (upstairs) Presenter: Ms. Haber Description: This session explores increasing reading skills through social studies content.

Graphic Organizers Location: 1-140 Presenters: Ms. DeMatteo Description: This session explores organizing information through the use of graphic organizers. The following organizers will be discussed utilizing Science content: VIS (Vocabulary Improvement Strategy), VENN Diagrams (2&3), 3 Word Main Idea Map, The V Map, Mind Map, and One and All Organizer.

Teacher Instructions:

• Teachers with a first period class need to view PSTV each morning so students will receive the vocabulary words & definitions for the day (There will be one word each day Monday through Thursday).

• Students should record this information each day. • There will be a quiz on all four words on Fridays. Students should write down

their answers on a sheet of paper during the PSTV broadcast. The quiz will be a sentence with the word replaced with a blank. Students will write the appropriate vocabulary word on their paper.

• Teachers will grade (exchange & grade) the quizzes immediately after the PSTV

broadcast.

• An email with the number of students who received 100% on the test needs to be sent to Jeannie Edwards and Michelle Cayea on Friday by 11:00 a.m. The appropriate amount of candy will then be placed in your box for distribution on Monday. Please return the zip-top bag to Jeannie Edwards’ box.

• Please do not send student tests to the offices. • The vocabulary words, definitions, and quizzes will be emailed to all teachers

each week.

NCLB Supplemental Educational Services (SES)

•Palm Springs Middle currently has 109 students receiving extra tutoring services through this federal program. Tutoring takes place both on and off campus with private tutoring providers.

•Students selected for this program are Level 1 or Level 2 in both mathematics and reading.

Adult Education/Community School

Palm Springs Middle is a full service Adult Education Center and Community School. There are over 450 students age 17 and over who attend classes here in the evenings each semester. Semester 1, Semester 2, Summer Semester
