LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

Summer. It’s a time for appreciating all that bring

simple joy. For me, the joys of New England are always

on that list: The sea, cookouts with friends and family,

fields of beautiful flowers and roadside vegetable

stands, clam chowder and boiled lobster, the Nantuc-

ket Ferry and Newport Bridge, the rocks at Knollwood

Beach in Old Saybrook and The Gris in Essex.

And I look forward to them all the more this year

because, over the past few seasons, it seems I have lived a thousand

lifetimes. I’ve experienced miracles and found great joy in them. I have

experienced profound loss and felt enormous pain. I have made some bad

connections — and found amazing love!

As is true of all of us, in the past seasons of my year, I’ve had the choice

to learn, to grow through both difficult situations and times of good. And

I believe that you, like me, know more than you think you do. In adversity,

we all have the opportunity to learn important lessons. With determin-

ation, we can always find another way. With an open mind, we can see

new possibilities. With an open heart, we may discover new partners to

accompany us as we move forward with our big, bold purpose.

And so, for me and for you, a new season begins.

I wish you a wonderful summer, wherever you may be. Enjoy the simple

things. Embrace your loved ones. And if challenges arise, believe in

yourself. In every season, begin with YOU. Begin with YES. Just BEGIN!

Blessings,

LMM

BEAUTY BELLY LOVEPalm Beach women officially have it all with spas like Belly Love, bringing a lifestyle experience to pregnant women they can call their own.

BY LINDSEY SWING

PALM BEACH WOMAN — 7

While most mommies-to-be can’t wait

to welcome their little bundles of joy,

they’re also not so thrilled about the

uncomfortable time in between, better

known as pregnancy, until now. Belly

Love offers a pampering oasis exclusi-

ve to pregnant women, complete with

a variety of prenatal massages, facials,

nail care services, and body treat-

ments. Taking the necessary steps to

ensure a healthy spa experience, Belly

Love will only use natural products

that are safe for both mommy and

baby. Pregnancy causes unique

physical changes as your body adapts

to accommodate the growth of a baby,

which is why prenatal massages are

often encouraged for pregnant wo-

men. Unlike most spas that only offer

prenatal massage during the third

trimester, you can receive a massage

any time during pregnancy at

Belly Love.

Belly Love doesn’t just cater to

pregnant women, as they also offer

preconception treatments for women

trying to conceive. With their success-

ful preconception massage series, this

unique service can help facilitate the

conception process by breaking up

adhesions and eliminating stress and

cortisol levels. Preparing your body

by reducing stress and cortisol levels,

whether you are trying to conceive

naturally or in conjunction with

appropriate medical treatment.

One of our favorite things about Belly

Love is you don’t have to be pregnant

to receive a spa treatment. Not only

are their massage therapists and

estheticians prenatal and postnatal

certified, they also offer an array of

traditional spa treatments such as,

deep tissue and swedish massage.

Parents-to-be love coming in for side

by side couples massages.

While enjoying a spa day at Belly Love,

you also have the opportunity to see

your baby for the first time with their

3D/4D Ultrasound. Belly Love has an

array of Ultrasound packages that can

accommodate any couple on a

budget. Two of the three 3D/4D

packages offered comes with a free

heartbeat keepsake where your

baby’s heartbeat is recorded and

inserted into one of the precious

stuffed animals.

Unfortunately, fashion tends to take

the back road during pregnancy, but

that is something the Maternity Buyers

at Belly Love refuse to believe. With

their merchandising expertise, Belly

Love’s buyers are able to bring in

confident, feminine, and flirty fashions

that celebrate life’s transitions.

Still curious about what a pregnancy

spa entails? We had the opportunity to

sit down with Palm Beach Woman and

Belly Love owner, Shanna Feldman.

PBW: Where did you come up with the idea to open a pregnancy spa?Shanna: I had a very difficult

pregnancy with my daughter, Jayden.

I would constantly dream of a place

like Belly Love, where I could get

away and be in an atmosphere that

was directly meant to ease the pain

and discomfort I was going through,

without hurting myself or Jayden. We

are an oasis for pregnant women expe-

riencing the not-so-pretty side

of pregnancy.

One of our favorite things

about Belly Love is you don't have

to be pregnant to receive a

spa treatment.

8 — PALM BEACH WOMAN

PBW: What makes you different from other facilities that offer prenatal services?Shanna: We are the only pregnancy

spa, ultrasound center, and maternity

boutique. Every product that we use

at Belly Love is made with natural

ingredients, so there is no harm to

our moms and babies. Belly Love is

the only spa that has most of their

spa treatments exclusively for preg-

nant women, and you can receive a

massage with us during any time of

your pregnancy. However, you don’t

have to be pregnant to come to Belly

Love. We offer couples massages and

everyday spa treatments, so women

can bring their family and friends with

them for a spa day.

PBW: There are a lot of Ultrasound Imaging Centers out there, what makes your 3D/4D Ultrasounds different? Shanna: Our 3D/4D Ultrasounds are

one of the most popular services we

offer at Belly Love. We live in a time

where people want things instantly,

and that proves to be the case during

pregnancy as well. We have the same

state of the art ultrasound machines

seen in OB/GYN offices along with

sonographers that are fully ARDMS

certified. It’s a requirement that all

sonographers at Belly Love are ARDMS

certified, which isn’t common for most

ultrasound imaging centers in the area

THE BAR METHOD

How did you start The Bar Method? I fell in love with a barre-based wor-

kout called The Lotte Berk Method in

1981 while I was living in New York City

and opened four of my own Lotte Berk

Method studios during the 90s. During

that time, I worked with physical

therapists to make the class safer and

more targeted, and in 2000, I founded

The Bar Method.

What was the thinking behind it? The Bar Method is designed to visibly

change students’ bodies and at the

same time to improve body

awareness. This mindful approach

to exercise changes students’ bodies

both inside and out. The result is

effortlessly beautiful posture, the

ability to quickly recruit the right

muscles for body change, increased

flexibility, and enhanced grace and

athleticism. The Bar Method’s focus on

engaging students mentally as well as

physically is the reason that many of

them find that The Bar Method is the

only workout they can stick with. They

feel improvements with every class,

making the experience a personal

physical journey toward their goals.

How is The Bar Method different from other full body workouts? The Bar Method is a comprehensive

program of body change unlike most

workouts. Three specific differences

set it apart: First, the exercises are

highly efficient. Each one strengthens,

stretches and re-aligns students’ bo-

dies simultaneously so that students

feel they get tangible results from each

one-hour class. Second, the workout

is safe for all ages and most physical

conditions while at the same time it is

intense and challenging. Look in on a

Bar Method class in session, and you

will usually see a diverse range of age

groups and abilities. Third, The Bar

Method is designed around the way

people learn. Teachers know the na-

mes of every student in their classes,

and call them to adjust, encourage,

compliment and inspire. This way,

WITH BURR LEONARD FOUNDER OF THE BAR METHOD

HEALTH & WELLNESS

PALM BEACH WOMAN — 11

A comprehensive program of body change…

students become engrossed in the

hour because they are learning and

receiving ongoing guidance as they

exercise.

How does it target specific muscle groups? The Bar Method efficiently targets

muscles that are commonly lazy and

unworked in today’s times. Exam-

ples are the triceps, the upper back

muscles, the glutes and the inner

thighs. To this end, The Bar Method

has developed one of most intense

training program across barre based

brands. Teachers learn to help their

students locate, recruit, and build

neural connections to these muscles.

Once students acquire these skills,

their bodies change dramatically.

The workout also safely works large

muscle groups such as the quads and

abs intensely enough to both reshape

them and to burn lots of calories.

How can someone start if they have not been regularly exercising? Come to class! The Bar Method is

especially set up to support and guide

beginners with patience and

understanding.

Bar Method Online is a great new tool — can you tell me a little bit about it and how it can be beneficial? Bar Online is an amazing way to

experience the Bar Method wherever

you are in the world. It features a

team of top teachers who are knowle-

dgeable, inspiring and entertaining.

Bar Online also offers a selection of

“mini-classes,” which are challenging,

fun 20-minute versions of its hour-long

class. Bar Online is easy to use. Just

click on barmethod.com, Bar Online,

and sign up for your choice of afforda-

ble packages.

THE PALM BEACH GIRLS

See & Be SceneSociety Sundays at The International

Polo Club was the quintessential ‘See

& Be Scene’ event of the season. Polo

now moves to the fabulous Hamptons

with a first stop in Greenwich, CT and

PBWM will be there. Polo in Palm

Beach is nothing short of amazing

-complete with wall-to-wall buffets,

high fashion, endless champagne,

specialty bars, and celebrity sightings,

what’s not to love? We had a great

time this season. We were pleasantly

surprised by the fashion; as women

graced the greens in classic Lilly Pu-

litzer and floppy hats, they were also

taking risks by standing out in ‘not so

Polo traditional’ looks that worked.

Our goal was to find a happy medium

between the two: preppy spring colors

with a splash of LLScene chic. Upon

arrival, we were escorted to a private

table with front row polo viewing. The

ambiance and service was nothing

less than phenomenal, as each guest

was treated like an A-list celebrity.

Halfway through the match, ever-

yone was invited on to the greens to

stomp divots, better known as having

a ‘Pretty Woman’ moment, comple-

te with complimentary champagne

and ice cream. We expected the ‘after

party’ to offer coffee and after dinner

drinks, but it was quite the opposite!

Down came the blackout curtains,

and in came a Palm Beach dance

party for the stars. It was our kind of

after party; fully equipped with a DJ,

flashing lights, and cold cocktails. We

walked down the red carpet to the VIP

Lounge, where bottle service and gor-

geous people were plentiful. Whether

you’re a ‘Palm Beach Girl’ or a ‘Palm

Beach Woman’, we can guarantee that

Sunday polo is the epitome of the high

society dream you thought it would

be, but less stuffy! The Polo Club offers

a variety of ticketing options suited for

any experience, but if you’re looking

to get the most out of your Sunday, we

highly recommend the Veuve Clicquot

Airstream Lounge Brunch Package for

Two for next season. This package in-

cludes the Pavilion Reception, a lavish

14 — PALM BEACH WOMAN

The Fit SceneLets face it, as much as it pains us

to admit it, it’s always bikini season

in South Florida. We come up with

excuse after excuse as to why we can’t

make it to the gym, until it’s the midd-

le of June and we are agonizing over

the thought of putting on a bathing

suit. We plan on taking preventative

measures now, so we don’t pay for it

later. That being said, our ‘go to’ bikini

ready workout is Flywheel Sports.

Flywheel Sports is an indoor stadium

cycling studio, which is also home

to Flybarre, a total body-sculpting

workout. Each Flywheel class is a 45 or

60-minute experience where you have

the opportunity to burn over 600-800

calories. Let’s face it; a spin class is all

about the instructors and the music.

Their playlists are created from a

collection of music carefully directed

by an in-house DJ. Your legs receive a

much-deserved break halfway through

the class during Flywheel’s arm series

where you work your arms with weigh-

ted bars. Why do we love Flywheel? It’s

a short class where you can go at your

own pace, which is key for a successful

workout. This escape will challenge

your body while relaxing your mind.

Flywheel has two locations in Florida,

one in Boca Raton and one in Miami

Beach. Your first class is free, but for

more information or to reserve your

class, visit, www.flywheelsports.com.

gourmet brunch, a complimentary

bottle of Veuve Clicquot at your table,

and exclusive VIP Airstream Lounge

or Veranda seating. Get going on your

reservations now for next season.

Sunday Polo anyone? We look

forward to it and what will for sure be

a fab summer in the Hamptons with

some of the same friends we met!

Who Are We Wearing? We have been eyeing LoveRich

Boutique, a new store in Delray Beach,

for quite some time now. LoveRich

Boutique owner, Jelena Lovric, has

the ability to know exactly what type

of look that would appeal to our taste

and body type, without knowing

anything about us. LoveRich

provides contemporary women’s fas-

hion and accessories that are right off

the runway. We love Jelena because

she has the gift of foreseeing trends

before they become trends. Always

having a passion for fashion and

styling, Jelena also showcases her

own clothing line in the store, along

with modern brands like Black Halo,

Black Orchid, Cut 25, and Torn and

Dean Davidson. LoveRich brings a

cutting edge look to Downtown Delray,

which is why you will always see us

decked out in their looks.

MICHELLE FERRY

Who is Michelle Ferry? This same question was asked to me

recently by a hypnotist at a guided

meditation and it redirected my life.

I was asked to recall who I was as a

young child and look closely at all the

characteristics of that child and to

find all the things that I loved about

that little girl. I was overwhelmed

with emotion when I realized that I

am exactly the same person. This was

such a powerful realization because

even though I have endured so much

loss, hardship, and painful lessons

throughout my life, I didn’t let it

change my core being. I stayed true to

who I have always been. I’m just more,

humble, sensitive, and so grateful

for it all. At age 46, I still have more

than half my life to go and I wouldn’t

change anything from my past. Every

experience just enhances who we are

today.

How did you get here?My love of both art and science lead

me down a path of opening my first

business with my best friend. Aquatic

Rehab, was a physical therapy practice

specializing in aquatic water thera-

py, the first in South Florida. After 14

wonderful years helping thousands of

patients, my partner wanted to move

to Texas to be closer to her family, so

we sold our practice to Bethesda Hos-

pital in Boynton Beach. At that time,

my only other passion was art and

community service so I found a way to

combine them both. I founded what

has evolved into Art House of Delray, a

501(c)3 nonprofit organization, where

I have volunteered as both Executive

Director and as an art teacher. I have

taught art classes for children and

teens for 11 years. The mission of Art

House of Delray is to develop ever-

yone’s own creative potential. With a

focus on visual arts, the organization

supports emerging and mid-career

artists with exhibition opportunities

while fostering love and appreciation

for art in the community and online.

After several years of working with

so many talented artists, my newest,

biggest, and most exciting inspira-

tional project is a film production

company that I recently launched,

Visionary Within Productions. Our first

project currently in pre-production is

“Revealed” - a new TV and web series

that sheds light on the lives of today’s

most successful artists. In this pro-

gram, artists share their own personal

path of discovery, success, inspiration

and spiritual journeys as they naviga-

ted their way to the top. Each powerful

episode is filled with inspiring stories

as the creative soul of each artist is re-

vealed. I have an incredible team with

Visionary Within Productions including

Director/Director of Photography, Rick

Gomez and Art Appraiser/Technical Art

Consultant, Linnea Polischuk.

Where did you grow up and what was your chi ldhood l ike?I had a beautiful loving childhood

growing up in east Tennessee, just out-

side the Great Smokey Mountains with

my parents and one sister. My father

was a dyslexic genius and was my big-

gest inspiration. He was a builder and

I would spend my summers going to

work with him. I was always amazed at

his ability to build, rebuild, and create

anything! He would build homes,

barns, businesses, machinery, and

even cars. He could also play several

musical instruments without reading

music or ever having had a music

lesson. My parents always struggled

financially, but they were always so

encouraging and accepting my eccen-

tric, artsy nature. They instilled in me

that I could do anything, and I

believed them! I’m grateful for

growing up in the mountains. It was a

world of wonder and adventure for a

young country girl with a love of na-

ture, the environment, and all of our

Earth’s creatures.

Schooling?I went to the Art Institute in Ft.

Lauderdale and then continued my

education later independently at Art

Glass Environments, Boca Museum of

Art, and the Armory Art Center. I also

studied glass this past year in Murano,

Italy and Seattle, WA - the two glass

capitals of the world.

Personal life, Married, Kids?I’m a single mom with four amazing

kids ages 11-25. I love being a mom.

I’ve learned so much about life and

about myself with every stage of pa-

renting. I think the key to good paren-

ting is to recognize and to appreciate

each child’s unique gifts that they

bring to this world. So many parents

damage their relationship with their

children because they spend so much

time trying to mold and change them.

I believe children come to this life with

all their unique gifts and talents, and

if we trust, encourage, and accept

who they truly are, they will blossom

and believe in themselves. Believing

in oneself is the only way to succeed

in life.

What inspires you?People!! I love meeting new people

and I’m fascinated with what inspires

others and especially seeing their

reactions to art. I get so inspired when

someone expresses their feelings

after seeing my glass Earth sculptures.

Visual affirmations and the image of

the earth are powerful — especially

in glass. My sculptures bring a hei-

ghtened awareness to what’s really

important in each

person’s own “world”.

What defeats your energy?Being around negative people.

I respectfully and politely keep a safe

distance. I refuse to allow others to

affect my disposition and optimism.

What do you do to relax?I read a lot. I also enjoy the beach and

keeping grounded in nature. However,

creating glass art and being in the

creative flow is the most relaxing

for me.

What do you do to get motivated?I don’t “get” motivated, I stay motiva-

ted! Life is a fantastic journey that is

racing by us. I don’t want to miss a sin-

gle moment. Both of my parents died

at a very early age, so I value every day

in which I’m blessed. I want to do and

Change is constant,inevitable,

and welcomed.

PALM BEACH WOMAN — 25

see as much as possible. There will be

NO wasted days in my life.

Give us a sample of the day in the life of Michelle? My daily schedule consists of all the

single mom responsibilities. I start

every day with exercise and medi-

tation. I divide my week working

between my glass sculpting and Visio-

nary Within Productions. I research

all the artists and am preparing for

bi-monthly interviews in locations

across the globe. I check in with my in-

credible team each day. The evenings

are for my kids, and when they are

all peacefully sleeping, I slip into my

home studio and create glass Earths

till the early morning hours.

If you could change something about yourself what would it be?I’m evolving everyday and have lear-

ned so much about myself especially

in the last year. Change is constant,

inevitable, and welcomed. I have

always been the type that lives “in the

moment” so keeping in touch with

friends and family has always been a

challenge for me. I have accepted this

about myself.

What do you love about yourself? My optimism, sense of adventure,

fearless perseverance, diplomacy,

and my compassion for people and

animals.

What traits do you love in other

people that you like to connect with?I’m attracted to intellectual people

from whom I can learn. I enjoy being

with optimistic, positive people that

have desire and a passion - people

that are more aware of who they are

and what they are doing with their life.

I also respect openly honest indivi-

duals that can speak their mind,

whether or not I like or agree with

them.

26 — PALM BEACH WOMAN

Where are you going and what are your plans for the next five years?Based on my intentions, the next five

years are crystal clear. I am marketing

my Earth sculptures along the western

coast of Florida, the west coast of the

U.S, and internationally. I’m currently

planning an exhibition of my pieces,

curated by Eddie Negron, to take

place in Miami in November. Visionary

Within Productions will be the vessel

of inspiration for artist and art

enthusiasts worldwide. In “Revealed,”

I will have the privilege of interviewing

today’s most successful and inspiring

artists as a tool to inspire emerging

artists of all ages. The interviews will

be utilized for both web based TV

and network broadcasting. I believe

there is no better way to learn how to

be successful than to learn from the

very best. I also plan to air in multiple

languages in order to reach a larger

audience. After the first year of filming

is complete, the information gathered

will be made into a full documentary

and published as a book series. Our

parent company is Consumer

Education Group (CEG), a North

American production company in

Boca Raton that will be first to air our

episodes in both Canada and the US.

CEG is a communication and produc-

tion organization that has over 20

years experience creating, producing

and marketing engaging programs

with one purpose in mind…

“sharing information”. Their edu-

cational campaigns and television

programs empower audiences, hel-

ping them make better choices. CEG

partners with leading corporations,

developing campaigns and television

specials that are created by producers

who work with many elements of

media to produce compelling content.

Who do you most admire?Today’s most inspirational leaders like

Dr. Wayne Dyer, Neil Donald Walsh,

Louise L.Hay, Dr. Brian Weiss, Doreen

Virtue, Oprah Winfrey, Don Miguel

Ruiz, and Tony Robbins.

What advice do you have for women in business or pursuing their dreams?I have several affirmations and mottos

that I live by. However, while filming

a recent interview with Kevin Dodge,

oceanic photographer, Kevin made a

comment that pierced my soul: “Don’t

Think, Just Do!” So many women are

so busy taking care of everyone else

and when they have a dream or vision,

they put their needs aside and then

overthink everything. They literally

talk themselves out of following their

passion. If you truly believe that your

dream can become a reality and you

act on it, you will achieve it. Stop over-

thinking everything!

What do you do to keep your body, mind, and soul in check?I meditate and power walk four miles

almost everyday. I recently became

addicted to aerial yoga. I also love

to hike and paddle board any chance

I get.

Your last supper? Who is at the table and what are you having? If there was such a thing as a last

supper, I would pull my favorite

masters from their graves like: Van

Gogh, Picasso, Da Vinci, Michelangelo,

and Warhol. We would have sushi,

tons of desserts and stay up all night

sharing ideas.

What are your favorite things in Palm Beach County, FL, Anywhere?I’ve lived here in South Florida for 27

years, and have never regretted it.

We have fantastic weather, diversity

of people, art & culture, and always

something to do. Two of my favorite

places I’ve visited are Europe and Bali

where I saw the real Eat, Pray, Love

medicine man.

recognized and can actually be held

against you if it takes time away from

your other responsibilities. If you find

that you spend a lot of time helping

others, make sure that mentoring and

coaching is part of how your perfor-

mance is measured.

4 Don’t over-explain. Women, especially if they are

mothers, are often used to

explaining things over and over in

order to be heard. If you explain things

too much at work, it can weaken your

position. Assume that your audience

is smart and that if they don’t unders-

tand what you are saying, they will

ask you for clarification. State things

once: clearly, confidently and factua-

lly. Then, assume your message was

received and leave the mansplaining

to the men.

5 Be firm but kind. While it rarely pays to be nice

at the office, it always pays to

be kind. One of the areas where many

women leaders excel is in softening a

hard message with diplomacy. While

A new study by Pew Research has shown that women equal men in most qualities needed to be a good leader, such as intelligence and innovation.

In some areas, such as ethics and the

ability to mentor employees, women

are seen as better qualified forleaders-

hip than their male counterparts. And

yet, only 5% of Fortune 500 CEOs are

women. What’s the deal?

The study found that one of the key

reasons women are not in more senior

positions is that, unlike men, whose

leadership abilities are assumed,

women have to obviously demonstra-

te their leadership skills in order to be

promoted. While it is frustrating that

the glass ceiling continues to exist in

2015, there are a number of ways to

get yourleadership skills noticed so

that you can rise to the top:

1 Say no without explanation. Women are often socialized

to be nice and say yes to any

reasonable request. While this might

work well in some areas of your life, it

does not serve you well in the execu-

tive suite. The reality is, you need to

say yes to those things that allow you

and your organization to meet stated

goals (these are the things on which

your performance is graded.) In order

to free up the time to meet yourobliga-

tions and still have a life, you need to

say no to almost everything else.

2 Never justify your seat at the table. Women often spend valuable

meeting time outlining their experien-

ce and skills to establish credibility.

Don’t waste time justifying why you

have been invited to the party, as it

undermines your authority. If you

were invited to a meeting or to be on a

project, assume that you are qualified

to be there, are there for a purpose,

and that others value your ideas.

3 Don’t be the office mom. Women are often socialized

to be helpful. If someone is

struggling with his work, it’s natural to

want to pitch in to help. Studies show

that women spend a disproportiona-

te amount of time when compared

to male colleagues on what Sheryl

Sandberg and Adam Grant refers to as

“office housework” like mentoring and

coaching others. Often this work is not

7 WAYS TO GET YOUR LEADERSHIP SKILLS NOTICED

PALM BEACH WOMAN — 29

it is not fair, women who are very

aggressive at work are more harshly

viewed than aggressive men. Aim for

assertiveness at all times; be truthful

and firm, but kind.

6 Take a risk. One of the areas where men

are perceived to outperform

women is in taking risks. Leaders drive

business forward by taking calculated

risks, whether it’s launching a new

product, expanding into a new terri-

tory, or making an acquisition. If you

want to be taken seriously as a leader,

you must be comfortable with taking

risks. If this is not something that co-

mes naturally, take a class in risk

management. Practice taking small

risks in your personal life or with busi-

ness issues where the stakes are lower

to increase your comfort level with the

process.

7 Negotiate to win. Women are seen as superior

to men at reaching a com-

promise but inferior when it comes

to negotiating a more profitable deal.

While win-win is ideal for many situa-

tions, sometimes business presents a

win-lose scenario such as negotiating

price, trying to win a bid, or competing

for a promotion. Practice negotiating

for the win and get comfortable with

disappointing others on occasion.

As Isaac Asimov wrote, “It pays to

be obvious, especially if you have a

reputation for subtlety.” By making

your leadership skills clear, you have a

better chance of cutting through gen-

der biases and ascending to the top

of your organization. Once there, you

can prove that women make excellent

leaders and improve things for the

women following in your footsteps.

BEGIN WITH YOU

Are you tired of ignoring

that desire for more in life?

Do you often feel like there is

something bigger for you to

accomplish in this lifetime?

Maybe you’re just unsure of

the next step to take. The feeling of ‘hitting a plateau’ is common right before getting to something good. It’s the natural progression of change. The reason for the pause is often because we have some “self” work to do. How are you going to go run that dream business, plant that creative seed or (fill in the blank) if you are not deeply connected to yourself?

BY VANESSA FEILS

Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise,

so I am changing myself. — RUMI

BOSS

PALM BEACH WOMAN — 31

Over the course of your lifetime you

have been exposed to all sorts of

conditioning. Your family lineage, how

your parents parented, the media,

religion and the education system you

were trained in. An awareness you

may begin to decipher; what of this

have you agreed to? Which teachings

or messages have you accepted as

truth not even realizing it?

You were created out of a space of

pure love and abundance. You might

agree, that the conditioning you have

been exposed to lacked this messa-

ge. So when you go within and try to

connect deeply

with yourself

you may find it

difficult,

because in

reality you’re

going against

the grain.

It all starts with YOU! To really effect

change you

have to identify

and shift the

patterns that

you, at some

level, have

bought into.

How can you

give to others if

you are not ca-

pable of giving

to you? You are

worth it. If you

believe this just

enough to take

a little closer

look…watch

out world...you just jumped on the

fast track to manifesting your dreams!

Think of it as an opportunity to dissol-

ve and re-design the template that is

overlying your life.

To ease you into this shift I have outlined a simple process: First, become aware of the moments

that you feel stressed or triggered.

We often miss this step because as

soon as we feel stress our mind jumps

forward, demanding a quick fix or

solution. I suggest taking a week and

writing down all of your triggers as you

feel them. If you carry a journal write it

in there or use the electronic notepad

of your closest device.

Second, you need to feel. Allow your-

self to be in the uncomfortable

feelings, without judgment. If you

were having a good day you wouldn’t

wonder, “Man, why am I happy right

now?” But if you’re having a bad day,

the first thought would be “Man, why

am I so miserable.” So, the next en-

counter that brings on stress or

anxiety, stop, feel and just be with

those feelings. The feeling that may

come up first is frustration, because

you don’t know how to be with these

feelings. So silently or out loud say to

yourself; “It’s ok that I feel sad, lonely,

frustrated, jealous or angry right now.”

Third, flip the lens is your new mantra.

Everything that shows up in your life is

for you. That’s right, no more blaming.

Challenge yourself to stay in the

positive and trust that what is showing

up for you right now is for “you”.

Remember, even in the toughest of

times, there is a silver lining.

The fourth and final step is experience.

There is no magic wand that can be

waved over your life. The magic shows

up when you do the work. When you

take the extra moment to become

aware, feel the pain, sadness or joy

and then flip the lens, trusting that

every situation is for you. Through

these experiences you will start to be-

lieve, feel whole, make better choices

and notice every sweet synchronicity

in life.

Now, if this article feels overwhelming,

write it down, you just detected your

first trigger. You’re the star in your mo-

vie. It’s time to become highly aware

and watch.

Steve Muschlitz says, “Please open the

who silently walks in heartache. A car

can help heal a whole family!”

It only takes a few to create a ripple

effect of positive change! If you know

A FEW GOOD MEN

Steve Muschlitz, owner of Country

Club Autos since 2004, created Wheels

from the Heart (WFTH) to provide

struggling single mothers with both

reliable cars and hope. Steve laun-

ched WFTH as a 501C3 nonprofit with

this mission: Place single mothers in

the driver’s seat of their own cars so

they can drive down the road toward

self-sufficiency!

Without a car, the mothers WFTH

seeks to serve face challenges most of

us can’t imagine. They might walk two

or three miles, with their children, in

the blazing heat or pouring rain, just to

get to a bus stop. Then, once they’ve

dropped their children off, many must

take another bus to work, only to find

themselves walking miles farther, late

at night, compromising their safety.

And, of course, when riding the bus is

the only option, job opportunities are

severely limited. All in all, for these

women, the lack of a car combined

with limited resources means that

the simple act of getting from place

to place becomes an ordeal, stealing

hours—three, four, or more hours—

from these families, every single day!

However, in only fifteen months, WFTH

has provided more than 33 cars to

single mothers, creating opportunities

for them to act in positive, life-

transforming ways that were previous-

ly impossible. For instance, recipients

have returned to complete their own

education as well as participating

actively in their children’s school and

after-school activities.

One woman, after receiving her car,

said, “This is a new life, a new

beginning. The second I received my

car my prayers were answered. I now

am able to spend time with my son.

He gets to participate in numerous

activities, which we could have never

done before.” Another shared, “I must

be doing the right thing. I have been

gifted a miracle.”

WFTH collaborates with various faith-

based and nonprofit agencies such

as Dress for Success, Family Promise,

Adopt a Family, First Presbyterian

Church by the Sea, Aveda, and Boys

and Girls Club, all of whom refer single

mothers in need of transportation.

In addition to their work on behalf of

struggling single mothers, WFTH also

provides transportation to those who

THE ABUNDANT HEART

PHILANTHROPY

Leading with your heart is fashionable these days especially when it comes to matters of

B y following their heart more

and not worrying so much

about what other people

think, women are demonstrating an

independent entrepreneurial spirit.

“Women are recognizing their resour-

ces are theirs to give,” according to

University of Miami President Donna E.

Shalala, “women cannot be assumed

to want to give to the same sort of

projects as men.” And in fact, they are

not. Current research indicates that

over 50% of women cite a feeling of

social responsibility as their primary

reason for giving. Yes, it is still enjo-

yable to attend luncheons, fashion

extravaganzas and the like, but only

when the end result is helping feed the

hungry, giving shelter to the homeless,

providing much needed health care for

children at risk. Women are definitely

contributing more strategically and

want to know what impact their giving

has on shaping the future of their com-

munity for the greater good. In fact

rather that making a donation women

consider their gifts are investments in

shaping the future of society.

During the last decade, women have

become more selective and more dis-

cerning in how they give and to whom

they give. One of the driving forces

behind this shift in women’s traditio-

nal patterns of giving is their increased

control of financial assets. Women

now control more than $22 trillion

dollars, which represents more than

60 percent of the wealth in the United

States and make or influence 84 per-

cent of philanthropic giving decisions,

according to The Center for Women’s

Business Research. Women also lead

in the workplace with 50 percent or

greater ownership in 10.6 million U.S.

firms that generate $2.6 million dollars

in annual sales and employ 20 million

people. Women’s leadership giving

circles at the Untied Way and Red

Cross and Jewish Federation are extre-

mely successful throughout the coun-

try. The Women’s Funding Network,

the national umbrella organization

for Women’s Funds, lists 145 member

organizations that collectively dona-

te over $250 million a year to causes

supporting the economic and social

issues particular to women and girls.

The Philanthropic environment is

historically a venue where caring

relationships and communities

evolve in more personal ways than

by voting or paying taxes,” according

to Mike W Martin, author of Virtuous

Giving. Women are now choosing to

define and enhance those caring

relationships and communities by

their authentic voice and with an

of tools that can help with that (we

love Tweepi). Twitter, if used properly

and monitored consistently, can help

your business reach out and actua-

lly communicate directly with your

clients, customers, and potential ones,

too, as well as colleagues and notable

experts.

Google+ (Google Plus)Google+ is Google’s answer to Social

Media and although it’s been a lot

slower to grow than many expected,

the bottom line is that Google owns

Google+ and that means that anything

that is posted there has a chance of

showing up in Google searches. It’s

simple to create a business Page. If

you blog, upload all your blogs there,

too. For local businesses, make sure

you create a Google+ Local profile, this

will enable searchers for your business

on Google to see an enhanced listing

with your address, business informa-

tion and even a map.

• Great for B2C and B2B (especially for local businesses)

InstagramInstagram, which was recently

purchased by Facebook, is a social

network for photo sharing from mo-

bile devices (Instagram has recently

launched a desktop website, but most

usage is on mobile). If you have a

very visual business and images are

important (such as fashion or interior

design) Instagram is a great way to get

exposure.

• Best for B2C businesses

PinterestWhat do people share most on Social

Media? Images. And Pinterest is a

social network that is nothing but ima-

ges. Think of your business Pinterest

page as a set of bulletin boards where

you have “pinned” things that ins-

pire you or of products that you sell.

Pinterest tends to drive a lot of traffic

to websites since every image that you

“pin” to a board is linked back to the

original web source. How all this traffic

can benefit a B2B website, is up very

much dependent upon what type of

business you have.

• 48.7 million users

• Best for B2C businesses

• Good for B2B businesses

We believe that most businesses

should set up a profile on at least two

of the major Social Media sites, even if

these sites are not going to be acti-

vely used. Every platform where your

company name and story appears

does help with your business’ overall

visibility.

Still confused? A good rule of thumb

is to pick one site and get comforta-

ble with it, then move on. For B2C

businesses that choose Facebook, for

B2B businesses choose LinkedIn. And

remember, Google is your best friend.

All the help you need is there, for free!

10 KITCHEN TIPS1 Paint.

It’s that simple. Painting your

walls a new color makes them

look brand new.

2 Update your counters. Can’t afford to completely

remodel your kitchen? Spend

a little to just update your counters.

Changing your existing laminate coun-

ters to Quartz will do wonders for the

overall look of your kitchen.

3 Update your cabinet hinges. For example, switch out your

door hinges for Blum soft clo-

se hinges. The hinges cost approx.

$10 each and really offer a high end

detail for a low cost. The blum hinges

allow your doors to close softly, on

their own at 2”.

4 Add inserts for organization.Measure out your cabinet in-

teriors and order cutlery trays,

slide out shelves, even spice inserts

that can be easily installed and offer

maximum organization. You can buy

many inserts online through Amazon.

Or work with a local kitchen shop to

help do the ordering and installing for

you.

5 Add a backsplash.Many old kitchens don’t have

any backsplash tile on the

wall space between the counter and

the upper cabinets. Take measure-

ments and figure out the total Square

Footage that you need of tile. The

easiest kind of tile to install yourself is

a mesh backed tile. It comes in sheets

of 12”x12” with endless options to

choose from. Adding backsplash tile

to your kitchen is a great way to add in

color to a dull space.

6 Update your vanity faucets.Old bathrooms usually have

1 hole for vanity faucets. You

can find single home faucets at all of

the big box stores. Watch a YouTube

video and you can swap out a new

faucet yourself with ease.

7 Handles and knobs. The easiest way to update

your cabinetry is to change

all of the knobs for handles. Handles

are used in 70% off new kitchen and

bath remodels. Knobs are becoming

a thing of the past. I suggest you buy

a cabinet hardware template from

Home Depot. It makes drilling the

new holes a snap!

8 Can’t afford new cabinets? Paint your existing ones!

Make sure you use a primer

first, Then remove all of the doors and

hardware. Set up a paint area and go

to town! Spraying doors is much easier

than using a brush. It helps to avoid

a streaky look. If you are not comfor-

table doing this yourself, hire a local

painter to bid the job for you.

9 Window treatments. Adding Plantation shutters to

your space will offer a classic

look that is very popular. Or simply

add a café curtain to give color and

still allow the sunlight to shine in.

10 New mirrors and light fixtures.New mirrors and light

fixtures are the biggest DIY impro-

vement you can do to a bathroom. I

often find beautiful mirrors at Pier 1

Imports. A great source for lights is

MARK MY WORDS STAY THE COURSE

Start doesn’t mean start and then

stop. It means you keep going, that

each day is another start, no matter

how the terrain has changed. And

when we work with this definition of

start- “staying the course”— tomorrow

will come with its own resources.

Change your mind if you must. Chan-

ge direction if you must.

Adjust your sails. But don’t stop.— MIKE DOOLEY
