PSAV (Program Code: 5625)

Length of Program

Clock Hours Length of Program

Clock Hours 32 weeks 698 28 weeks 698

Justification: EMT/Firefighter Combination (5625) is an existing PSAV program. The EMT/Firefighter Combination Program (5625) is comprised of three required courses: EMS0110; FFP0010; FFP0020. The program is offered as a single cohort and encompasses a total of 698 combined PSAV clock hours. The purpose of this revision is to accurately reflect the program length over which the EMT/Firefighter Combination Program is taught. EMS0110 is taught over 16 weeks and FFP0010/FFP0020 is taught over 12 weeks for a total of 28 weeks and 698 PSAV clock hours. The Palm Beach State College Program Addition Curriculum Committee Form Submission Packet reviewed and approved by the Curriculum Committee in August 2018 states the program length as 32 weeks.

Presenter: Teresa Armas for Chad Krouse Discussion: The new EMT-Firefighter PSAV was reported incorrectly in the previous curriculum submission. It was originally reported as 32 weeks, it should have been 28 weeks. Q: Are there students in the program? A: Yes, the program began in January. EMT is 16 weeks, Firefighter is 12 weeks, totaling 28 weeks. Q: Students are already in the program; how will they be notified of the change? A: The program manager will notify the students of the change. Dr. Albertini requests that the department commit that students be notified of the change.

Justification: This program focuses not only on broad, transferable skills but also on highly technical applied trades skills and stresses understanding and demonstration of trades skills concepts that include OSHA 10 safety, classroom and laboratory skills training. This program includes marketable skills necessary for the Low Voltage Technician trade. With changes in the economy as well the demand for high technical skills to enter the low voltage industry, this program offers a career pathway that responds to the portended critical shortage of technically trained entry level tradesmen. Palm Beach State College is an Accredited Training and Education Facility (ATEF) for the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). Program completers will recieve certifications from NCCER for their employment portfolio.

Presenter: Brent Ebner

Discussion: Q: Is there a need for this program? Is there industry demand?

A: It is very similar to what we offer now. This program is better able to showcase what we offer. Q: Will you have more than 1 cohort running per year? A: We are starting with one cohort during the day. Q: Is there any advertising for this program? A: We already have business partnerships set up ready to accept our graduates.

Justification: The proposed program will address training needs of Palm Beach County industry in the broad area of automotive entry level mechanics. This program will include theory and lab assignments mirroring the industry needs. This is a large and growing occupational area with significant numbers of current and forecasted job openings. The program will be offered as a crossover program for the graduates of the Diesel Service Technology, that have been asking for a faster route to obtain the basic automotive knowledge. The ASE Advisory Committee for the automotive and diesel programs have been recommending this program for more than a year based on the existing necessity of these entry level mechanics. Also, meetings with business partners from the community and with the local industry have been in process for more than a year and are ongoing. The curriculum frameworks have been discussed with industry and have been approved.

Presenter: Eligio Marquez Discussion: Advisory program requested these programs to be shorter, for entry level technicians. Technicians will earn 4 of the 9 ASE certifications from the 1800 program. Q: How does the community perceive our students being in shorter programs- being trained a little less? A: Students have also asked for this. The program is stackable through Prior Learning for students who wish to continue with their education.

Justification: According to the Florida DEO Marine Industry Gaps and Job Vacancy Survey there are approximately

1,800 South Florida employers in the industry, accounting for about 28,000 direct jobs. The survey measured 1,352 currently unfilled jobs mostly due to hard and soft skills gaps.

In the research done in PBC there is a high demand for marine technicians. The average wage for these technicians is $21.00 per hour. There are big and small marine industry companies in need of these technicians.

Presenter: Eligio Marquez Discussion: The county and industry partners are requesting this program- specifically the Riviera Beach Task Force. Q: Is this program for the yachts? A: Yes, it is for all types of boats. Q: Can any of these courses be stand-alone courses? A: Yes, through CCE, interested participants can get certified through the American Boating Yacht Council (ABYC).
