Wood
Laminated paper-thin wood is scored and folded into the elements
for a vault. The use of ultra thin material allows the structure to seemingly float. This cloud of
wood challenges the mass associated with the vault, as well as wood
construction.

Wood, Steel, Glass
Wood is a mobile structure. The adaptability of the cladding allows for
many different conditions: a sleeve to wrap and protect the dwelling, a covering for an outdoor patio,
protection for automobiles.

Concrete
Elements of concrete interlock, forming the potential for precast joints.
Rigid elements fold together, creating a structural and sculptural façade. The
joint invites a new meaning to the modularity and flexibility of concrete.

Concrete
Concrete is a decorative façade. Massive elements bend in an alternating pattern, playing with light and disguising
an electrical plant. The façade appears to float, encouraging a greater sense
of wonder about the seemingly heavy pieces defining the building’s elevation.

Glass
Thin elements of glass are woven together to create a structure with the
qualities of fabric. Color gradient makes the mass appear metallic. Fluxus
tricks the observer by pushing and accentuating the fluid properties of
glass. Glass can be massive and mobile.

Glass
Curved panels of glass help to reduce glare from the strong Louisiana sun. The shapes of the windows are very
intentional. This project raises the question of how to resolve a corner
of two curves coming together. What structure will support these panes without destroying their elegance?

Glass
The atrium is redefined. Glass is used to modernize a historical architectural
space. The material challenges the boundary between indoor and outdoor
space. It allows light and heat to pass through, while still creating a physical
barrier.

Steel, Glass
A thin steel screen covers two massive cantilevers. The twin structures create
open or closed spaces depending on their positioning. At night, lights
dematerialize the screen, allowing for a glowing structure with a mysteriously
large span.

Steel
Steel is dropped into existing brick ruins. The simple and modern
structure provides an elegant contrast to the fallen building. A space is created
within a space.
TACKLEBOX
Materials have characteristics. Allowing the materiality to influence form and
design leads to a simplicity where natural beauty of materials is apparent.
PleatscapeWood, Concrete
Continuation of the ground plane underneath a building allows for a
place of gathering and interaction. The wooden walls bend to form seating
areas and tables. Thoughtful moves to continuing wall and ground in order to form objects creates a graceful space.

Simple treatment of materials can provide beautiful decoration.
Architecture is not solely practical. Knowledge of materiality allows for a
knowledge of ornament. Consideration for the interaction of materials leads to
moments of beauty.
SaipuaWood
A wooden structure slides into an existing garage. The storefront is
created with minimal construction. Attention to direction and grain
provides thoughtful spaces for display.
Timber InstallationWood
Often it is beneficial to consider the strength of material alone.
Wu TableWood
Wood is a strong and natural material. Connections free of nails and screws are a reminder of where the material comes from and what it is capable of
forming.
HAWORTH TOMPKINS
The careful choice and use of materials integrates new design with old
structures, preserving the memory of the past, while providing new insight to
a space.
The London LibraryMasonry, Glass, Metal
It is important to know history. Renovations revive and repurpose
structures by calling attention to what existed in the past. At times, preserving
can be stronger than rebuilding.
Aldeburgh Music CafeMasonry, Wood, Metal
A new floor and ceiling are installed to protect from the elements and provide
a supportive ground plane for the building. The walls are old, but remain
original and exposed. Brick is strong and can stand the test of time.

New Bond StreetMasonry, Metal, Concrete Block
Clean white elements provide a strong contrast to the original building. Edge
and boundary are highlighted. There is an architectural strength in the boldness
and contrast.
Newington GreenWood, Concrete
Wooden strips challenge boundary. There is a separation of space, but not from weather. The decision to
shield the stairwell with strips of wood provides an enclosed space that feels
very open.
MATERIAL PALETTE
Mass Concrete
Poured into forming a solid and immensely heavy form, concrete
provides mass to architecture.
Mass vs. Void Concrete
Which provides greater intrigue, solid mass or the space it forms?
Void Concrete
Can a solid speak to the void that allowed its formation? How can
memory begin to provide inspiration?
RhythmSteel
Why does structure tend to be evenly spaced? Is it out of necessity or desire?
MemoryConcrete, Steel, Wood
Material holds onto its past. One can see the traces with a considerate eye.
MemoryMasonry
Brick weathers with age. A mature wisdom and beauty emerges.
Movement and Boundary Wood
Wood is directional. It can pull one through a space as well as stop one in
their tracks.
BoundaryConcrete, Steel
Consideration of edge should always be an important factor. How does one
material begin to form the boundary of another?
BoundaryGlass
Glass is fluid, yet able to hold substance. How can this balance be
explored?
URBAN LAB AND OBSERVATORY
Material Proposal.
The structure and form of the Urban Lab and Observatory is mainly poured
in place concrete. Concrete beams and columns carry the weight of the
construct. Concrete is simple and elegant, complimenting the moves
the ULO is making. The memory of the form work plays to the theme of
negative space within the building.
The concrete is clad with different materials in order to define the function
of space. Wood lines areas that are intended to be more private, for those who live and work in the ULO. Steel cladding begins to distinguish public
spaces, open to all.
Glass begins to form boundaries. In open areas, it forms the guardrails,
protecting those who walk through the building. It protects indoor areas from the seasonal Cincinnati weather
while allowing full views to the city that surrounds.
