PISD meets turf contractor in the middle after change order dispute

■ Open House Thurs. at Trull Foundation

The Trull Foundation would like to invite the community to an Open House welcoming their new Executive Direc-tor, Nellie Claybourn Lee. The Open House is scheduled for July 25 from 2-4 p.m. at the Trull Foundation, 404 4th St.

The heat was on last week at Palacios ISD, and not just the air temperature, as two company reps were being roasted by school board members for asking for additional money via change orders to the contract.

“It almost looks like you kinda low-balled us first, and then come back and say “oh, we need this, and this”,” stat-ed PISD School Board Trustee Bran-

don Bowers at last Monday’s Regular Board Meeting. Bowers’ comments were pointed at a representative of Hel-las Construction, the company that is building the new track and turf at Shark Stadium.

“It’s going to be a $1.6 million dol-lar project, right? By the time we spend $1.3 million and we keep going through all these change orders, it’s going to be a $1.6 million dollar project.”

Representatives from both of Palacios’ health care providers were on hand at last Tuesday’s Regular Meeting of the Board of Commissioners of Matago-rda County Navigation Dis-trict #1 seeking support, fi-nancially and otherwise.

Dr. Barbara Hayes, from Matagorda Family Prac-tice, stated her mission in seeking the Navigation Dis-trict’s support is “Trying to find some non-profit ways to support those people in our community who cannot provide for themselves.”

Gail Purvis, Chairman of the Palacios Community Medical Center (PCMC) Board, along with CEO Bob Pascasio, were more specific in their request, as they are seeking donations and grants for projects at PCMC that include a gen-erator, a new roof for the

Projects near and (not-so) far fueled last week’s meet-ing of the Palacios Economic Development Corp. (PEDC) Board of Directors.

Mike Ferdinand, PEDC and Matagorda County EDC Executive Directors, led off locally with details of a re-cent inquiry for a commer-cial retail prospect in Pala-cios. He was optimistic of a site visit to come within in the next 30 - 60 days. Fer-dinand also noted the hotel project along the waterfront is still active.

Ferdinand said he was anticipating an abatement application within the week and a site visit on an indus-trial project.

While Matagorda County is still in competition with another neighboring county,

PLAYERS in the Palacios Youth Football League (PYFL) were treated to a free foot-ball camp by Shark gridiron legend Terrell Lee. With the assistance of PYFL coach-es and fellow former Sharks, Lee ran the youngsters through a multitude of drills and excercises ahead of the PYFL season, set to begin in August. YOAKUM: A local minister was laid to rest Sat-urday in Yoakum following what’s become a swarm of recent bee attacks across the region. The Reverend Lawrence Hall, 59, a pastor at the Beth Elder Baptist Church, passed away Monday at an Austin hospital after sustaining several bee stings while mowing near some abandoned houses along Herder Road three days prior. He was the fifth area person hospitalized because of recent bee attacks, and the second to die as a result of those attacks. Hall had already been stung dozens of times when a passing motorist spotted him and called for help. - Yoakum Herald-Times

Rockdale hopes to become Texas’ Hemp HubRockdale: The leaders of a company who want to

bring an industrial hemp business to Rockdale and Milam County visited Monday and promise activity by fall. Jerry Walters II, chief executive officer of Op-pidian, and Timmie Lane, co-founder, are planning an effort they promise will turn Rockdale into the state’s hemp hub. “We’re looking at bringing 45 to 50 jobs,” Walters said. “And we plan to get started after Labor Day.” While Oppidian’s stated goal is to develop phar-maceutical formulated products derived from hemp, Walters says hemp has “a multitude of other uses that includes clothing. We will, with the assistance of Texas A&M, teach farmers how to grow this new crop with which they won’t be familiar.” Oppidian envisions land-lease agreements. “They won’t need crop insur-ance. We will provide that,” Walters said.- The Rockdale Reporter

During a question and answer session, several commissioners expressed their displeasure with the arrangement whereby PCMC receives no taxpayer funding from Matagorda County.
