Repainting hallways, stairways, bedrooms and living areas

Using a soft cloth, wipe the walls down using Resene Interior Paint Cleaner or

mild detergent and warm water

Repainting kitchens and living rooms – including open plan

Anaverageopenplankitchenandliving room will use 4-6 litres ofpaint.

Using a soft cloth, wipe the walls down using Resene

Interior Paintwork Cleaner or mild detergent and

warm water

Fill all dents, defects and holes using Selleys Rapid Filla and lightly sand

Use Sugar Soap to remove any grease and oils from around the cooking area

We recommend 2 coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen standard

(D311) or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom (D311K)*These products are also excellent

for bathrooms and laundries.

Alternatively, apply 2 coats of Resene Zylone Sheen standard or VOC Free (D302) or Resene

Decorator Low Sheen (T5)

• GreaseandoilmustberemovedpriortorepaintingusingSugarSoapora strongkitchencleaner,suchas‘Jif’.

• Whendealingwithceilingsitisimportanttorememberthatsteamfromkettlesandcookingmaybecomeaproblemforflatceilingpaints.ReseneZylone20andReseneSpaceCoteFlat(D314)aremuchtougherthanReseneCeilingPaint(D305)andarerecommendedparticularlyinthekitchenareabutshouldbeavoidedforwallsthatmayrequireregularcleaning.

• UseReseneLustacrylKitchen&Bathroom(D310K)semi-glosswaterborneenamelontrimandjoineryinbathrooms,kitchensandotherwetareas.ForahigherglossfinishuseReseneEnamacryl(D309)glosswaterborneenamel.

Painting over wallpaper (in good condition)

Notes:• Wallpaper in good condition is easy to paint but once

painted,thewallpaperwillbemoredifficulttoremove.

• Somevinylwallpaperswillallowmigrationofplasticisersinto the paint film and this will result in the paintremainingslightlystickyortacky.Typicallyifatestpotisusedduringthecolourselectionprocessanditdoesn’tgettackythenourothercoatingswillalsobefine.Howeverit can takeupwardsof threeweeks for this tackiness tobecomeapparent.

• Use Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer over solid andpaperbackedvinylwallpapers.

• Veryoccasionallyyoumayhaveanotherwisesoundpaperwithametallicprintedpattern. ThiswillneedsealingwithReseneSuresealorReseneEnamelUndercoat(D44)priortopainting.

• SomeedgesmayneedstickingdownandthisisbestdonewithSelleysAquadherePVAglueapplied toboth faces, left for at least 20minutes and firmlypressedorrolledflat.

• Smallbubbles,oftenonlyapparentafterthefirstcoatofpaintmaybecrosscutwithasharpbladeandtheedgesglueddown.

• Whenstoppingholesinwallpaperpressinthesurroundswiththehandleofaputtyknifepriortostoppingthehole,otherwiseyoumaybeleftwithalumponthesurface.

• Youmayfindthejunctionoftheskirtingandwalldifficulttocutinbecausepapersusuallyslightlyoverlaythejunctionandarelativelyraggededgeresults.Oftenitisbesttopainttheskirtingboardandthewallthesamecolourforthemostevenfinish.

Stripping old wallpaper

Scour the wall using a Paper Tiger Wall Paper Stripper

Using a flat bladed scraper, remove the damp paper

Wet the area you are stripping thoroughly, about 5-6m² at a time using Metylan Wallpaper

Remover. Work from the bottom to the top

Apply Resene Moss & Mould Killer (D80) if substrate has mould spores present

Fill any holes, dents and cracks using Selleys Rapid Filla and lightly sand with

220 grit zinc sterate sandpaper

Sand with 100 grit zinc sterate sandpaper

Apply Resene Sureseal (D42)

• Thekeyistoensurethewallpaperisthoroughlysoakedwiththestripper.CutsmadebythePaperTigerallowthemixturetopenetratethepaper(andlayersofpaper)moreeasily.

• Layoldtowelsagainsttheskirtingboardtopreventmoistureenteringthecarpet. You will needtobeespeciallycarefulifusingReseneMoss&MouldKillerasanyspills,splashesordripswillbleachthetowelsandcarpet.

• Useacombinationofa75mmbroadknifescraperanda25mmscraper forcornersanddifficulttoremoveareas.

• Areaswhereplasterhasbeenusedtofixholesetconoldwallpaperareverydifficulttoremove.

• Once the paper is removed the surface will be less than perfect and holes and gougescausedbythescraperswillneedtobefilled.

• After filling Resene recommend Resene Broadwall Surface Prep & Seal to improve thesurfacebeforepainting.Thismayrequireasecondcoat.

• Thewallswill need sealingandas someglues,moistureandeven theagedpaperfacedplasterboardmaystainthroughawaterbornesystem,alwaysuseReseneSuresealafterapplyingtheReseneBroadwallSurfacePrep&Seal.

• Steamstrippersareavailableforhire.Ifyouhavelargeareastostripyoushouldconsiderthisoption.

• We have an arrangement with Hirepool allowing Resene customers to receive a 10%discountonthehireagechargeuponpresentationoftheirReseneColorShopCard.

primersasweatherboards.Unfortunatelythesamequalityissuesalsoarise–refertothesectiononnewweatherboards.

• Ifwindowsareputtied(asopposedtousingatimberbead)waituntilitisfirmtotouchbeforeproceedingtothepaintingstage–usuallyafter10days,unlessasyntheticfastdryingputtyhasbeenused.

• Itisimportanttopaintthetop,bottomandinsideedgesofthewindowtoensureagoodmoisturesealandhelpreduceswelling.Westronglyrecommend the full three coat system is applied to theseareas.

• Traditional full gloss solventborne enamels used to be our onlyrecommendationforexteriorjoineryhoweverbecauseofthesignificantincrease in U.V. resistance that the waterborne enamels have and their ease ofapplicationtheyarenowpreferred.

• Afullglosssolventborneenamelcanstillbeused–refer laterflowchart,howeverthewaterborneequivalentwouldbeexpectedtoperformbetter.

• Whilethebasisofsomedebatewerecommendthatwindowsarecompletedbeforetheweatherboardsandthattheedgesorscribers(seephoto)arepaintedthesamecolourasthewindowframesratherthantheweatherboardcolourifdifferent.

Repainting wooden windows, doors and joinery

Treat moss and mould using Resene Moss & Mould Killer (D80)

We recommend 2 coats of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne

enamel (D310)

Thoroughly wash and scrub using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash (D812), a Scotchbrite pad is ideal

Alternatively for high gloss finish recommend 2 coats of Resene Enamacryl gloss waterborne

enamel (D309)

Sand any flaking paint and inside facings of the window and frame

Spot prime using Resene Quick Dry primer (D45) or Resene Wood

Primer (D40)

Replace any putty using Red Devil synthetic putty, fill any nail holes etc, spot prime putty using Resene Wood Primer (D40) after

allowing 24 hours to cure

Notes:• The best way to wash and prepare windows is to use Resene Paint

Prep and Housewash and 3M scourer or Scotchbrite pad, which iseffectiveatreachingedgesandrecessesofwindows.

• Althoughnotalwaysdone,thetop, internalandbottomfacesofthewindowshouldbepainted.

• Hackoutandreplaceputtythathasdriedoutandcomeloose–werecommend Red Devil or Bostik Synthetic putty as they can be primed within 24hourswithReseneWoodPrimerandthenpaintedwithReseneLustacrylorReseneEnamacryl.Traditionalputtyneedstocurefortwoweeks.

• Theinsidefaceswillneedsandingto‘de-gloss’them.OldenamelpaintnotexposedtoU.V.light(theinsidefacesofwindowsandframesinparticular)getsharderandmorebrittleovertimeandwillneedthoroughsandingbeforepainting.Theexposedfaceswillneedwashingto‘de-chalk’ifthepaintworkissound.

• Substratesthatareexposedata45degreeangletothesunaresubjecttotwicethelevelofU.V.attackthataverticalorhorizontalsurfacewill.Inthesamewaythatournosewillgetsunburntmorequicklythatourcheeks.Thisiswhythetopedgeofawindowsillwilldeterioratemorequicklythanotherpaintedsurfaces.

• We recommend Resene Lustacryl as its lower gloss conceals imperfections moreeffectivelythanthehigherglossReseneEnamacryl.

• ReseneAquaShield or Resene Sandtex (particularly the Superfine version) can beused on an old chimney or concrete basement assuming they were to be paintedadifferentcolour to therestof thehouse. Itcanbeanattractive featureandwillcontinuetolookgoodyearsintothefuture.

• Any gloss will accentuate joints and imperfections as is the case with texturedMonotekunder‘criticallightconditions‘–aflatpaintlikeReseneSandtex(D71)orReseneAquaShield(D601)shouldbeusedtominimisethiseffect.
