Ted spent much his young adult time trav-eling with bands and loving the adventure. Hefell in love with a bartender, he described as his“Marilyn Monroe” and the two married. Life onthe road, however, could be hard on a relation-ship and the marriage ended nine months later.

Eventually Ted decided it was time to comeback to Muskegon and settle down. He marriedNancy, a Muskegon school teacher who workedwith the deaf. Ted also added, “The nicest girl Iever knew.”

Ted continued to play piano and had run-ning gigs at places like Aaron’s Restaurant, TheCentury Club and the Beachcomber at PierMarquette. At one point he thought he’d get a“regular job”. “That lasted all of ten minutes,”Ted says with a laugh. Lifting 75-pound bowl-ing ball castings from Brunswick may have beensteady work but, Ted realized, his heart was atthe piano.

One of his highlightsplaying piano was beingasked to play at the BlueLake Studio for Lazio Vega’sjazz radio program. He saidthe piano there was amaz-ing and made him soundgood. He was only sup-posed to play 20 minutes, but he ended up playing foran hour.

My final question forTed was “What do youthink of music today?”. Hereplied, “Oh, music todayis rotten . . . but, I’d join arock band in 2 minutes ifsomeone asked me!”

Ted has been a resident here for over threeyears now and we are so fortunate to have him.He is originally from Muskegon where he grewup on Jefferson Street and went to Nelson Ele-mentary School. He describes himself a shyyoungster, the oldest of four children, whofound his passion early on from listening to theradio and discovering jazz music. He especiallyliked musician, Earle Garner, a self-taught jazzpianist that absolutely blew Ted away with hisfull sound. Ted was determined to duplicate thebeautiful sounds he heard, so, as he puts it, hestarted to “pluck around” on the family piano. His perseverance to replicate what he heard paidoff. His natural talent and excellent hear formusic shined through and it wasn’t long beforehe started playing at school events.

By seventeen, Ted joined his friends in put-ting together a band to play rock and roll tunes. They played for private parties, receptions, andat Bob’s Barn, a dance hallfor young people, locatedoutside of Holton. Ateighteen, he had drawn theattention of Bob Mitchell,a talented trumpet playerand band leader. He offeredhim a spot in his band andin 1960, Ted headed downto Texas, earning one hun-dred dollars a week. Theystarted in Corpus Christi, playing at the El DoradoClub. Ted loved Texas,“there are no snobs inTexas” Ted said, “and therewas plenty of pretty girls tospend his money on.”
