Winners of the First World War Centenary Battlefield Tour

the History department launched a competition this term to take two Year 9 History students on a trip to tour the Battlefields in France and Belgium. Students were asked to complete an informative display piece of work and present their piece to members of the senior Leadership team. The short-listed six were Millie Curtis, Joshua Gigg, Amelia Williams, Maisie Moylan Jones, Sophie Jessop and Bethany Hitchen. Judges felt that the standard of work was amazing and showed knowledge and commitment to the subject. Eventually it was decided to award sophie Jessop and Bethany Hitchen the opportunity to take part in the trip, with amelia Williams a well-deserved reserve.

“the academy’s students were

very well behaved and really made the most of the

opportunity to learn first-hand about the artwork before them. the

day was incredibly enjoyable and everyone came back from the trip

enthused and able to draw on the experience in their

future studies.”

Year 11 Learn About Cyber security

The Academy’s 35 and 45 mile Ten Tors squads have been out on Dartmoor training for the event. The squads walked over 17km across Dartmoor, visiting a number of tors on route. They endured some cold but sunny conditions making it challenging yet highly enjoyable due to the amazing scenery. Well done to all students for putting in a great effort to complete the distance.

Year 13 ICT students visited Crealy to discuss digital marketing, including a presentation by Craig Clews, Assistant General Manager. This will relate to their latest unit of work looking at how the use of social media has increased massively over recent years and is now a world-wide phenomenon.

Computer Science students had a visit from a lecturer in cyber security to discuss cyber threats and prevention and what a career in cyber security would be like in terms of earnings and future job prospects. Fantastic festival for primaries

Waterleat Road Centre Tel:01803 403005 Email: [email protected]

Primary schools were invited to take part in an outdoor education festival which included eight different activities: Alphabet Hunt, Guiding to Safety, Magic Spell, Team Bench, Teamwork Relay, Code Breaker, Stepping Stones and Archery. The sports leaders who were running the event were excellent and were very motivational helping the children!

Bibi, student from Preston said “It is very fun! My favourite activity was the relay as I got to help my friends win the race!”

Double Paralympic athlete, David Hill, came to PCSA for a full day of action with a number of students from the academy. He described his journey of successes, disappointments and perseverance during challenging times, which captured the imagination of the students endorsing the belief that anything is possible. He also spent time with two Year 9 groups, representatives from the Sports Council and finally a two hour session with the academy’s gifted and talented students. They took part in a series of challenges, teamwork activities, personal reflection, planning and even had the opportunity for personalised question and answer sessions.

CREST award at a record high

The CREST award has kicked off with a bang this year, seeing its biggest intake of students for the award at 35. Students are taking on a wide range of projects from burning materials and finding out which are the strongest, to being crime investigators and even building model roller-coasters.

We have our committed and regular intake that are currently on their Gold CREST award, where they are looking at the best material for sails, examining concentrations of salt and sugar in foods and even building a remote control car.

Despite being one of the youngest and most inexperienced teams, PCSA’s first ever Chess Club, entered the South West Regional Final of the ECF Team Chess Challenge at Torquay Boys’ Grammar School. The team was made up of Yuri Allasia (captain), Justin Mallari, Leo Mullings, Fynn Richardson and Mason Babbage. Even though they faced stiff competition from Torquay Boys’ Grammar School, Exeter School of Maths, Stover, Coombeshead Academy and St Cuthbert Mayne, they finished a fantastic 14th out of 21 teams – which is outstanding for such a fledgling squad and they represented the Academy with confidence, fantastic behaviour and great sportsmanship.
