Over the past two legislative sessions, we’ve successfully lobbied for a total of $3 million in grants in support of manufacturers. e Chamber is the exclusive state affiliate for the National Manufacturers Association. We have also been a strong supporter of our state’s food manufacturers, particularly with our annual Hawaii on the Hill initiative, which showcases Hawaii-made foods and industries to Congressional leaders, national association executives and other representatives. Our commitment to serving this industry and all of our members continues with this agreement with HFMA. ere are over 1,000 manufacturers in Hawaii accounting for 71 percent of the state’s export share and providing over 13,500 jobs with an average annual compensation of over $42,800, or 15 percent more than other private non-farm jobs. In fact, this industry has one of the highest multiplier effects. We look forward to continuing to support this industry in Hawaii so that we can successfully make products in Hawaii for Hawaii, as well as promote the Hawaii brand internationally. For Hawaii, in particular, buying local food includes a variety of health and economic benefits. e positive effects on Hawaii’s economy of buying local produce and products are often understated or overlooked. roughout the course of a year, local residents spend over $3 billion on food expenditures. According to the Department of Business Economic Development & Tourism, roughly 85-90 percent of Hawaii’s foods are imported. Based on these statistics, alone, buying locally grown or made goods has significant potential to grow Hawaii’s economy. Estimates show that by exchanging only 10 percent of the foods we import for local foods, Hawaii could benefit from an additional $313 million flowing into the economy. It is also estimated that exchanging 30 percent would produce over 2,000 new jobs. Aside from economic benefits, local consumers would, of course, benefit from the added taste, freshness, health and environmental benefits of buying local. With agriculture still an important sector of our local economy, the Chamber supports the Hawaii Department of Agriculture’s (HDOA) Buy Local, It Matters initiative to encourage residents to support Hawaii farmers by making conscious decisions to purchase locally grown products. In March, the Chamber hosted e Future of Farming event in partnership with its Young Professionals program to provide members with the opportunity to learn about the future of farming and agriculture in our state from the point of view of young professionals working in the industry.
