India has an army of over half a million in the Vale of Kashmir, a ratioof one soldier for every six adults. The Indian Army's presence in Kashmir constitutes the highest con-centration of soldiers anywhere on the face of the earth.Since 1989, Indian soldiers have killed, maimed, and tortured tens ofthousands of innocent Kashmiris. Women, children, and the elderlyare particularly targeted.Indian authorities routinely sanction the rape of women; since 1989,6,000 have fallen victim.India burns down entire towns and villages, sparing neither schools, hospitals, nor mosques.

Representing the "largest democracy in the world,"the Indian authorities tried to force Kashmiris to the polls by takingtheir children hostage and threatening others with death and destruc-tion. Despite such state-sanctioned terrorism, only a handful ofKashmiris actually "voted."

Asssalamu alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatu

Qnce again welcome to Columbus - the city and the com-munity who were our most generous hosts last year. It isthe magnanimity Columbus and the love of the brothers

and sisters of Greater Columbus and Central Ohio that hasbrought us back to Columbus.

This Convention is focused on Peace and Justice which are cen-tral to Islam and to our life. Considering the interest this themehas evoked from the outside world, we are confident that it willonly harvest positive feelings for Islam and Muslims, especiallyamong our North American compatriots.

It is imperative that all of us resolve to utilize the improved sit-uation toward strengthening Islamic institutions in NorthAmerica. ISNA and its family of institutions offer a range of ideasand opportunities for the community to get involved in and notonly work within the community but also in the mainstream.ISNA and its family institutions evolved out of the need for creat-ing an Islamic Society in North America. Let us all join our handsand work toward institution building because these institutionsare vital for perpetuating our identity and for making a contribu-tion to nationbuilding.

We pray to Allah to help us learn and interact with patience, and grant us the sagacity to pursue our goals of strengtheningour institutions.
