Q: My sister and I are horse shopping for her first horse this spring. What are some of the questions I should ask a potential seller? --FBTo simplify this complicated process, develop an outline that will break down a purchase into different categories with relevant questions for each section. Ask your horse friends to contribute to the list. It is important to determine what the short term goals are as a horse owner. Most people don’t want to have to wait to enjoy their new horse. Consider the top five priorities and commit to not deviating from them as you shop.

The seller has a responsibility to truthfully represent the horse, however not all husbandry programs are the same. Ask questions that reflect what the horse might experience in the new stable. Areas of interest include stall, grooming and turnout manners, horse-horse interactions, dental problems, tack and equipment, corrective shoeing or specialized diets.

Always ask for permission to talk with the seller’s vet regarding the horse’s health history. Don’t commit to purchasing a horse without a thorough veterinary exam that includes blood work. Discussions about health should include: Any sensitivities to vaccine or medications? History of strangles, colic surgery, EPM or Lyme disease? Genetic disease, like HYPP or SCID, should not be overlooked even with unregistered horses.

Most reputable sellers want to make sure their horses are placed with an owner that is a good fit, so don’t be surprised if they have a list of questions for you, too! -- Lynne B.
