Faith Family, On July 6th, our High School students will head up to Baltimore to help out with a brand new church plant called Connecting Church. This will be the very first organized outreach activity in the history of this young Church. Our students have the opportunity to get in on the ground level and see what it takes to plant a church. We will do servant evangelism projects, host block parties, and other outreach activities within this community. During the week our students will spend time studying the book of James. Please pray our work would be fruitful for this new church plant, that our students would be impacted through their service, and that God would use our time to help us grow closer to Him!
These are busy times but we wouldn’t trade them for the world. There is much work to be done in our town, our nation, and around the world. Get involved in the work that God is doing around us!

By His Grace, For His Glory,
Dr. Thurman Hayes, Jr.
What an enriching time of worship this past Sunday, as we joined together to
praise, study God’s Word, and take the Lord’s Supper. The following is
something I have written in response to the Supreme Court’s decision on gay
marriage:
On Friday, June 26, 2015 the Supreme Court of the United States, by a 5-4
decision, legalized gay marriage in America. That five people can be given the power to do such
a thing is incredible in itself. It raises all kinds of questions about the power of the Court, as the
four dissenting justices in the case made very clear. Indeed, as Chief Justice John Roberts stated
in his dissent, the five justices who voted to legalize gay marriage were not even making legal or
constitutional arguments. They were driven not by the Constitution, but by the winds of culture
and their own moral preferences. Chief Justice Roberts wrote this of the majority’s decision:
“The majority’s decision is an act of will, not legal judgment.”
Now the rest of the nation has to live with their “act of will.” It is an act that is shocking in its
arrogance. In one naked display of hubris, five people took an action that seeks to redefine nature,
recorded history, and what is taught by all major religions.
But one thing has absolutely not changed, and that is the way that God defines marriage. After
all, marriage is not a human idea or invention. It was designed and defined by God in Genesis
2:24, which says, “A man will leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and the two will
become one flesh.” Marriage, according to its Author, is to be monogamous and heterosexual.
In fact, the New Testament makes it clear that marriage is meant to be a picture of the relationship
between Christ as the bridegroom and the church as his bride (Ephesians 5:31-32).
God’s vision for human sexuality is beautiful and grand. The Bible teaches that sex is the good
gift of God. It is, however, a gift which comes with parameters – parameters which, like all of
God’s commands, are given for our own good. According to the Bible, sex is to be reserved for
marriage, which God defines as the union of a husband and wife.
The question for those of us who take the Bible seriously is this: How should we then live in the
culture of America in 2015?
First, we must not panic, but trust in a sovereign God. We do not honor God when we fret and
worry. Yes, there are serious issues of religious liberty at stake. That is the next battleground,
and every political candidate or officeholder should be asked very penetrating questions
about where he or she stands on all issues related to religious liberty. But if Christians are
persecuted in America, it will not destroy the church. The Supreme Court cannot put Jesus Christ
back in the tomb, and persecution only makes us stronger in our faith.
Second, Christians should live with grace and truth. Our Savior was “full of grace and truth”
(John 1:14). Jesus was full of compassion and mercy for sinners, which we all are. None of us is
“straight.” We are all broken and flawed people. But no serious Christian celebrates his or her
sin, nor can we celebrate the sins of others. Instead, we must love our neighbors enough to speak
what we believe to be the truth. And we must love God enough to stand on the truth.
These are interesting times in which we live. We are seeing the best and worst in our nation in so
many ways. The Supreme Court decision was among the worst. The response of the families of
those killed in Charleston was among the best. Pray for these dear people, and look for my col-
umn in the Suffolk News Herald this Saturday. It will be about the power of forgiveness, as dis-
played by the families of Charleston. This Sunday we will pray for our nation, and talk more
about what it means to live for Christ in the America of 2015. See you then!
