The New Hampshire Farm Museum in Milton spans generations of coun-try life in the Granite State, and at Christmas, the site will glow bright with good cheer.

At the museum’s annual Victorian Christmas, the farmhouse will be lavishly decorated, and costumed role players will tour with visitors to see what the holiday was really like in the 1890s and 1940s.

Role player Carolyn Chase of Brookfield said many generations of the Jones family lived there, from 1778 until the 1960s.

“You cover a whole long period of time. This particu-lar program at Christmas is the Victorian period. How-

ever, Thanksgiving, for ex-ample, is 1863 in the middle of the Civil War. There are a variety of time periods dur-ing the year,” Chase said.

During Victorian Christ-mas, Chase will portray Elizabeth Cowell, who lived with her daughter, Emma Jones, and her family on Jones Farm in 1890.

Cowell, according to Chase’s narrative, is busy with chores and taking care of her three children. So Cowell, a widow at the time, would have stepped in to help with the Christmas preparation.

“The scenario for that particular day is that her daughter Emma is busy with one of the three small children that she has. She has invited people for a Christmas celebration. So I am trying to fill in for Emma

while she is indisposed,” said Chase.

Janet Hotchkiss is direc-tor of volunteer opportuni-ties at the Farm Museum. Hotchkiss said a big part of the museum are their costumed role players.

“We have a lot of people that have a few hours or some have a few days that they’re willing to give throughout the year. That’s in keeping with the mission of the New Hampshire Farm Museum. We want to keep history alive for today’s gen-eration, but also for future generations. Much of what we do is hands-on or role playing,” Hotchkiss said.
