WESTERN NISSAN 848 Caribou Street West, Moose Jaw, SK Tel: (306) 691-0016 For all those that have come to Moose Jaw during the Festival of Words to indulge in the literary prowess of Canada’s most prolific authors, Thursday July 16th is the perfect day to meet another Canadian Bestselling Author while she is in town for a book signing at Yvette Moore Art Gal- lery. Corinne Jeffery will be in Moose Jaw on Thursday, July 16th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to sign her very well-researched and spellbinding trilogy, the Understand- ing Ursula series; Arriving: 1909-1919; Thriving: 1920-1930 and Choosing: 1940-1989. “It is a Canadian history cap- turing the pioneer/immigrant experience, an intriguing saga of cultural themes and traditions, a healing journey, a catharsis, a family legacy, which conveys an im- portant lesson about life. When we take responsibility for our actions, when we own who we truly are, we can become the master of our destiny, not a victim of our history,” says Jeffery. “All three books of the trilogy reveal what can transpire when people choose to be silent, to keep secrets from each other and how all too often that lack of critical information can alter the direction of an individual’s life.” Jeffery says she writes the kind of books she likes to read: “compelling story, en- grossing characters, unexpected twists and turns and a satisfying conclusion with most of the loose ends wrapped up, spe- cifically in terms of what happens to the dominant characters.” Long novels satisfy her quest to delve into “the intricacies of the characters and ex- plore the strengths, attributes, weaknesses and foibles of the human condition,” she says. The outcome has always been Jef- fery’s focus, rather than the process. “I love history because I can discover what has happened to people in the past, and find out how things have ended for them.” All three books in the trilogy end as cliff- hangers. Jeffery has also included a nine page epilogue at the completion of Choos- ing: 1940-1989. Jeffery resides in St. Albert, Alta. Last September, her first book went into its fourth print and she became a Canadian Bestselling Author. Although her trilogy has culminated onto international acclaim, she is already on another journey penning out her current novel in the works, Lords and Lepers. “It’s a story of four women as they journey through adolescence into adulthood,” she says. “It is a social com- mentary, and I believe my protagonists will verify my thesis that in today’s soci- ety, much too often we are valued for what we do and for what we have, rather than for who we are as human beings.” Jeffery says her focus is to tell “real stories about real people – those whom everyone could relate to in terms of what they might be experiencing in their own lives.” An excerpt very near the beginning of Lord and Lepers is very intriguing: “Remarkably, though from the first day of the fall term, Susan had singled Carole out during the two scheduled recesses and the lunch hour, and more often than not they had their heads together in secretive discussions. Not knowing what to make of the unlikely friendship, Francine had tagged along, at first simply content to be seen in the company of the elegant Susan. As the days passed and her confidence grew, she even ventured to contribute to their conversations whenever the opportu- nity presented itself. It was soon apparent even to the awestruck Francine that it was Carole, more so than Susan who was becoming increasingly ir- ritated by her uninvited and decidedly un- welcome participation in their tete-a-tetes. For the most part, Susan was tolerant of Francine’s interruptions, even listening with a modicum of graciousness not faint- ly shared by Carole. Still, every now and then, when the belle of the school lifted her eyes skyward, Francine glimpsed her cloaked condescension; Susan Smith was acutely aware that she had more, and others had less. And, therefore that made them less.” Take time out of your day to meet Corinne Jeffery at Yvette Moore Art Gallery on Thursday, July 16th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Books will be available for signing. Although her trilogy has culminated onto international acclaim, she is already on another journey penning out her current novel in the works, Lords and Lepers. “It’s a story of four women as they journey through adolescence into adulthood,” she says. “It is a social com-mentary, and I believe my protagonists will verify my thesis that in today’s soci-ety, much too often we are valued for what we do and for what we have, rather than for who we are as human beings.” Jeffery says her focus is to tell “real stories about real people – those whom everyone could relate to in terms of what they might be experiencing in their own lives.”An excerpt very near the beginning of Lord and Lepers is very intriguing:

“Remarkably, though from the first day of the fall term, Susan had singled Carole out during the two scheduled recesses and the lunch hour, and more often than not they had their heads together in secretive discussions. Not knowing what to make of the unlikely friendship, Francine had tagged along, at first simply content to be seen in the company of the elegant Susan. As the days passed and her confidence

grew, she even ventured to contribute to their conversations whenever the opportu-nity presented itself. It was soon apparent even to the awestruck Francine that it was Carole, more so than Susan who was becoming increasingly ir-ritated by her uninvited and decidedly un-welcome participation in their tete-a-tetes. For the most part, Susan was tolerant of Francine’s interruptions, even listening with a modicum of graciousness not faint-ly shared by Carole.
