Anne Frank lives again By Kelly Konesheck

Two years after the Rice High School Drama Club's performance of The Diary of Anne Frank for their One Act Play, it's still creating a buzz. In 2002, Rice competed with the play and performed for several Holocaust survivors. Now the cast and crew of The Diary of Anne Frank have been invited to per- form the play this summer at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., and then again in Manhattan, New York, at the Anne Frank House for the Anne Frank Celebration, honoring her 75* birthday, if she were alive.

The whole cast, including Rice High School alumni Jordan Konesheck, Brennan Jobe, Jessica Thomas and Amanda Kaiser, who will return with cur- rent drama club members Jessica Lopez, Jonny Diaz, George Pierce, Daniel Posada and Kelly Konesheck and crew are incredibly honored to be invited.

"It's an awesome feeling to know that people appreciate and still want to see what we do," said Posada.

The invitations are also a personal joy for Director Deborah Reed, who de- cided to do this play for One-Act to honor her parents, Holocaust survivors, and to do her small part in spreading the word as a second-generation Holo- caust survivor. Instead of just touching the hearts of those in our small, Texas town, her depiction of Anne Frank's life has reaching across the U.S.

"It became clear to me that this was God's work. It was perfectly clear that, after all the good that came from performing the play, continuing to perform it was the right thing to do," said Reed.

RHS recognized for Yearbook Excellence

The Rice High School (RHS) yearbook staff, advised by Melody Grigar, has been recognized by Taylor Publishing Company with an Honorable Men- tion Award for their overall dedication, effort and accomplishments. The RHS yearbook is featured in the 2004 Yearbook Yearbook.

"Taylor Publishing's Yearbook Yearbook is the premier yearbook-specific design annual," said Clif Palmberg, Yearbook Yearbook editor. "Across the coun- try, thousands of yearbook advisors, editors and designers use this publication for design ideas. The schools featured are some of the trend-setters of the in- dustry."

Yearbooks published by Taylor for the 2002-03 school year were evaluated for excellence in one or more of the following areas: cover design, theme de- velopment and page design. Taylor Publishing recognizes only the top five per- cent of yearbook staffs for outstanding yearbook achievement.

"The Award of Excellence is given each year to a small percentage of year- book staffs nationwide that demonstrate excellence in yearbook creation," said Mike Taylor, marketing manager at Taylor Publishing. "We applaud these staffs for their outstanding work and support their efforts in scholastic journalism."

As advisor, Grigar was asked by Taylor to recognize the best spreads in the book and the editors who created them. She nominated three spreads in the Student Life section created by Yearbook Editor Amanda Burrow, one spread in the Senior section and one on graduation created by Erin Gold, and one spread in the Athletic section created by Lauren Spanihel.

Several copies of the 2003 yearbook, Out of Nowhere, are still available. The price has been dropped to $25. Orders are currently being taken for the 2004 yearbook, Now Playing.

FFA members compete in San Antonio Show

nio Livestock Show. Winners were: Commercial Steer: Grand Champion, Jess Little; Dane

Krenek, 7th place; Chad Mahalitc, 8th; Tiffany Varley, 9th; Trey Staff, 11th; and Camille Staff, 12th.

Little also won best test and Mahalitc won best record book. The Rice Consolidated Ag Mechanics team received 4th place in the Ag

Mech competition. In the market lambs show, Bernadette Jurica placed 4th. Alyson Lanier received 3rd with her halter steer. We would like to congratulate all of the winners and participants from Rice.

Thank you for your hard work. We are proud of all of you. Rice FFA members are now preparing for the Houston Livestock Show.

SHERIDAN NEWS By Velma

Tiffany Varley was among the six FFA students from Rice High School who participated in the San Antonio Livestock Show Jr. Commercial Steer program. This event lasted for three days with the students having their pen of three steers evaluated, making a speech and taking a test. At the awards banquet, the top 15 finishers were rec- ognized. All the students from Rice placed in the top 15. Tiffany received ninth place in the competition. The stu- dents will now participate this month at the Houston Livestock Show.

The school district has a new school nurse and she has ties to Sheridan. Teresa Stanley, daughter of Wanda Peterson Moss, began her duties re- cently and is excited about the oppor- tunity to be in this area. She and her family plan to move to Sheridan soon.
