If you attend one of our staff meetings, you’ll often hear a member of our leadership team utter that phrase. It’s not just a mantra: We know our organization is only as good as the people working in it. In the newsroom, we’re blessed with a strong and tal- ented team that works hard day in and day out to deliver the news to Iowans. Some members of our team are fa- miliar faces — columnists or reporters you’ve been reading for years. Some are names you probably wouldn’t recognize because they work behind the scenes — editing stories, post- ing them across platforms and handling myriad other tasks. And others still are new faces who have joined the Register in recent months. Last fall, we reorganized our newsroom with the goal of finding efficiencies to spend less time on production work, add more reporting firepower and better aim our resources at attracting new audiences. We said goodbye to some em- ployees. We welcomed some new ones. We’re almost fully staffed now (save for a few positions we’re still looking to fill), so it seemed like a good time to introduce our newsroom to you. It’s a team that includes many native Iowans and some transplants who came from such places as Illinois, Texas, Georgia and Kansas to join us. Our newsroom is organized around teams of reporters focused on government ac- countability, quality-of-life issues, communities, sports, entertainment and culture, and voices. We have coaches who work with reporters, planners who make sure we present the best content at the best times, and engagement editors who look for opportunities to con- nect with the community. Among the changes in the restructured newsroom: » Expanded politics team: We know how important poli- tics is in Iowa, so we added two new positions. Jason Noble recently moved to a new “Real- ity Check” role to fact-check the statements of politicians and public officials. He was replaced on the Statehouse beat by Brianne Pfannenstiel, who came to us from the Kan- sas City Business Journal. Josh Hafner, formerly our young professionals reporter, is in a new role delving into the is- sues and role of millennials in picking our next president. » More columnists: Des Moines native Daniel P. Finney became our new metro col- umnist in the fall, writing about important topics and interesting aspects of life in the metro. We added a business columnist and are recruiting to fill that position. And we still have your favorite columnists — Rekha Basu in editorial, Iowa columnist Kyle Munson, political columnist Kathie Obradovich, and Randy Peterson and Rick Brown in sports. » Community engagement: We’re more heavily focused on connecting with the communi- ty, in ways big and small. In recent weeks, metro govern- ment reporter Timothy Meinch hosted a police chief candidate forum, and Reader’s Watchdog Lee Rood held a charitable giving forum. More are in the works. We want to reach you wherever you are — in person, across social media and through our various products. And we want you to know us better, too. So in addition to today’s two-page spread show- casing our newsroom, you’ll soon start seeing short profiles of our staffers on Page 2A. We hope you enjoy meeting our team.
