On March 23, 2009, I awoke at 4 a.m. with sharp pains in what felt like my lungs and stomach. I was eight-and-a-half months pregnant at the time, so this was incredibly frightening. This was my first child and I had no idea what labor pains felt like, but I was fairly certain that I shouldn’t be feeling this kind of pain in my lungs and probably not in my stomach at only 34 weeks gestation.

Despite the pain and the loom-ing fear that something serious was wrong, I did not panic. I ran a hot bath and tried to soothe the pain. I readied for work, which was at 6 a.m. at the local Sonic where I carhopped.

Around 5:30 a.m., the pain had reached a level where I knew something just wasn’t right. I called my doctor, Leslie Coffman, in West Monroe to schedule an emergency appointment.

Dr. Coffman did several tests. My blood pressure was extremely high and my body had swollen into something I didn’t recognize, seemingly overnight. He did an ultrasound and told me that I had developed HELLP Syndrome. I needed to be hospitalized imme-diately and the baby would be delivered via emergency cesarean the following morning. I was terrified.

HELLP Syndrome is a combination of symptoms, including hemolysis — the break-down of red blood cells, elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count — platelets help the blood to clot. The cause of HELLP Syndrome is unknown, though it is thought to be a variant of preeclampsia. Only 0.2 to 0.6 percent of all pregnancies are affected by HELLP Syndrome, americanpregnancy.org said.

On March 24, 2009, at 9:30 a.m., I was put to sleep and Dr. Coffman performed an emer-

gency cesarean delivery. Luna Ocean Ross was born at 9:35 a.m., weighing 3 pounds, 12 ounces. She was 15 inches long. She was immediately taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Glenwood Regional Medical Center, where she

remained for four weeks. Because the effects of HELLP

Syndrome can linger for a few days post-birth for the mother, I remained in the hospital for seven days. Unfortunately, I was so ill that I was unable to see Luna for two full days following her birth.

My experience with this disor-der and pre-term delivery was the most terrifying thing I have ever gone through.

Americanpregnancy.org said the maternal mortality rate for HELLP Syndrome is only 1.1

percent, but the infant morbidity and mortal-ity rate ranges from 10-60 percent, depending on several factors such as the gestation of pregnancy, severity of symptoms and the promptness of treatment.

Luckily, both Luna and I lived through it, thanks to the NICU at the Glenwood Re-gional Medical Center in West Monroe and the March of Dimes, who funds research to help premature infants and mothers with pregnancy-related health issues.

But this is just one story in a long list of stories of individuals who have benefitted and lived because of the March of Dimes.

Show support for this wonderful foundation on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the March for Babies celebration at Louisiana Tech University’s Lambright Intramural Center. Registration begins at 8 a.m.

Who would have thought back in 2010 when Rand Paul won election to the Senate as a libertarian champion that the first me-dia blowup in a Paul presidential campaign wouldn’t be over his past support for privatiz-ing Social Security, or his misgivings over the 1964 Civil Rights Act, but over his flip-flops?

There used to be a time when Paul’s inevitable presiden-tial campaign of-fered the prospect of a stark GOP debate over principle on foreign policy. Not anymore.

We now have the “new” Rand Paul. He entered politics as his father’s son on foreign policy and has emerged as a presidential can-didate who wants to be known as the second coming of James Baker.

To believe Paul’s latest posture, he’s a me-too Republican on foreign policy, only a little less so -— the most-hawkish dove, or most-dovish hawk, in the Republican field, depending on the day.

This has been an awkward and often un-convincing transition. The senator got snippy on Wednesday when Savannah Guthrie of the Today Show asked him about his changing position on Iran. She pointed out that Paul said in 2007 that Iran is not a threat. Paul responded that 2007 was “a long time ago,” as if the statute of limitations on prior positions expires long before the passage of eight years.

One wonders how far Paul would push this. In 2012, Paul was the lone vote against a Senate resolution in favor of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and against containment. But, hey, that was three long years ago — when he was young and ir-responsible, he was young and irresponsible.

In 2014, he clarified by stating his unequivo-cal opposition to containing Iran, despite his opposition to saying we won’t contain Iran. He defended this as “strategic ambiguity,” and it was certainly ambiguous.

It turns out he has a knack for ambigu-ity. Paul has made a point of supporting the Iran negotiations, but signed Sen. Tom Cotton’s letter meant to put a damper on the negotiations, while justifying that letter as strengthening President Barack Obama’s hand in the negotiations.

Usually, libertarians scold everyone else for their lack of purity from an Olympian height of disdain. Paul won’t have that prob-lem. On foreign policy, he is struggling for coherence, let alone purity.

Not too long ago, it seemed that Paul was ready to pull the party his way on national security, rather than having to play catch-up with the party’s drift in the other direction.

In retrospect, the GOP opposition to bombing Syria after President Obama’s “red line” threat in 2013 was the high-water mark for a Paulite impulse within the party. Soon enough, the red-line fiasco became a watch-word for Obama’s weakness, and events — the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the rise of ISIS, the diplomatic strains with Israel — revived a traditional GOP reflex toward toughness.

Rand Paul says he has simply evolved, but it is rare for any politician to “evolve” in a direction that isn’t more politically conve-nient for him.

This gets to the difference between Ron and Rand Paul, of course. For Ron, the electoral pointlessness of his presidential runs was the point. He was a conviction politician who ran to generate support for a cause, not to win anything.

Rand believes he’s in a different game, which is why he’s increasingly a housebroken libertarian. His attacks on career politicians are particularly tinny as he maneuvers his way around the rules in Kentucky to run for president and re-election to the Senate at the same time, lest he face the prospect all politi-cians naturally dread — relinquishing office.

It’s not clear what Paul will get from all of this. He is in a tough field, much tougher than his dad ran against in 2008 and 2012, and faces the risk of underperforming him, even as he compromises — and obfuscates — to try to make himself more viable.

The new Rand Paul will be hard-pressed to escape the old Rand Paul.

Eco-marathon team wins big for community

Louisiana Tech University’s award-winning eco-marathon team brought home second place in the UrbanConcept diesel category and were the only compressed natural gas-powered vehicle to successfully run the track, but did not finish, at the Shell Eco-marathon Americas in Detroit.

The diesel vehicle, Diesel Dawg, won first place in vehicle design and third place in best diesel fuel economy in the Urban Concept class last year. It was also test driven by Formula One driver Fer-nando Alonso at the 2014 Formula One Grand Prix race in Austin, Texas.

This year former late night show host and car enthusiast, Jay Leno, described Diesel Dawg as the most street ready vehicle at the competi-tion.

Champ, the new compressed natural gas vehicle did not bring home any accolades — due to not reaching all of the requirements asked — but it was the only vehicle in its category to actually be able to run the course. And because nobody met all requirements, no one placed in the category.

Thousands of students attended the event. Tech is always honored in the top positions. This is a testa-ment of how well their already pres-tigious engineering department is.

But the most important thing Heath Tims, associate professor of mechanical engineering at Tech, said was the fact students from dif-ferent areas of engineering came together to learn hands-on work.

Many of the students who have worked on past vehicles have gone on to work for several major car companies such as GM, Tims said.

Having this teamwork working on the future of energy in the world only proves the future is bright for not only Tech, but also for the whole world.

We’re one step closer to having fuel-efficient cars and one step closer to being less reliant on fos-sil fuels.

It is a slow process, but it makes for a brighter future, and one of the places it is starting in is a little ga-rage on Louisiana Tech’s campus.

Jeremy Mhire, associ-ate professor of political science at Louisiana Tech University and event orga-nizer, said these polls are important, especially right now.

“Henderson’s lecture comes at just the right

time,” Mhire said. “As the 2015 legislative session gets underway, it is important to know where the people of Louisiana stand on any number of issues, from the state budget and higher education funding, to tax in-centives and even the Com-mon Core standards. Such information is an invaluable

tool for state legislators as they try to represent their constituents. But it is also useful for citizens as they assess how well their legis-lators have done their job.”

Dardenne said he thinks Louisianans expect that from the next governor.

“They are frustrated right now with the lack of leadership they are seeing from the governor’s of-fi ce,” Dardenne said.

Dardenne said the immediate issue that needs to be resolved is the cutting of higher education.

“You truly have to set priorities, and higher education should not be on the chopping block,” he said. “Across the board cuts don’t work — they punish the effi cient and reward the ineffi cient. We need to realize what is most important and overall that is education — especially higher education.”

“The super rich? They don’t pay this tax. They have a legion of lawyers and tax planners. They have charitable trusts and foundations,” Brady said. “These are family-owned, hard-working, risk-taking, determined Americans who are building their business, their farm, their ranch. These are not, as we will hear today, the Paris Hiltons and robber barons of the Teddy Roosevelt days.”

The deduction for state

and local sales taxes helps people who live in the nine states without a state income tax on wages.

House Republicans say the measure is about fair-ness because people in states that have incomes taxes can deduct those taxes on their federal returns.

The vote was 272-152.These seven states have

no state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Da-kota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Also, New Hampshire and Tennessee tax income from interest and dividends, but not wages.

The deduction is one of dozens of temporary tax breaks that are routinely extended every year or two. House Republicans are work-ing to make selected ones permanent.

Diamond ’Dogs to face UABLeader Sports Service

The Louisiana Tech base-ball team returns home this weekend when the Bulldogs welcome Alabama-Birming-ham for a three-game Confer-ence USA series, which is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. today at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.

The weekend series be-tween Tech and UAB is scheduled to continue at 3 p.m. Saturday, weather per-mitting, while the finale is set for 1 p.m. Sunday in Ruston.

The Bulldogs enter the series against UAB with a 16-17 overall record and are looking to bounce back from back-to-back losses at Middle Tennessee last weekend. Tech is still in search of its first C-USA series win after starting league play with a 3-11 record through the first five weekends. Heading into the weekend, the Bulldogs have posted an impressive 12-5 record when playing on its home field.

“UAB is a very well-coached team and they are playing really well lately,” said Tech coach Greg Goff. “They have one of the best pitching staffs in the country. They have the No. 1 defense in the conference, so they are not going to beat themselves. We are going to have to be at our best to beat those guys.”

Fresh off a series win over Rice last weekend, UAB heads to Ruston with a 21-14 overall record and an 8-7 mark in Conference USA. The Blazers are right in the middle of the league

standings in sixth place after winning three of their last four C-USA series.

UAB had a pair of big wins last weekend when No. 12 Rice traveled to Bir-mingham, as the Blazers the first two games of the series before dropping the finale to the Owls Sunday afternoon. Most recently, UAB lost a midweek game on the road at Alabama, which means the Blazers enter the series versus the Bulldogs having lost two straight.

Tech and UAB are look-ing to break a 7-7 tie in the all-time series when the two teams compete in the three-game series this weekend. In the 14 total meetings, Tech has won six games at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park, but the Blazers got the best of the Bulldogs in their most recent meetings. In 2014, UAB defeated the Bulldogs in a three-game league series in Ruston to complete the series sweep on the road. UAB won the first game, 8-1, in the opener before completing the series sweep with a pair of victories over Tech in a doubleheader on that Saturday.

Tech enters this week looking for a little more consistency with the bats, but the Bulldogs have seen steady improvement in the box over the last few weeks. As a team, Tech is hitting .256 and has posted a .360 on base percentage through 33 games, which ranks fifth in Conference USA. Bryce Stark is Tech’s leading hitter com-ing into the series with a .338

average and 20 runs batted in.UAB comes to town as the

second-worst hitting team in C-USA as the Blazers are bat-ting .245 on the season with 44 doubles, nine home runs and 18 home runs. The Blazers are led by senior outfielder Chase Davis, who comes into the weekend with a .280 clip with six doubles and 12 RBIs. As for driving in runs, UAB’s leading run producer is Jeff Schalk, who has a team-high five home runs and 23 RBIs, while hitting .267 overall.

Tech’s pitching staff en-ters this week with a 4.31 earned run average, which currently ranks sixth in Conference USA.

The Bulldogs will stick with its normal rotation this weekend versus UAB, start-ing with left-hander Tyler Clancy (5-3; 3.81 ERA) set to take the mound in the series opener Friday. Tech will fol-low up with right-hander Phil Maton (3-1; 2.96 ERA) in the middle game Saturday, while right-hander Laetten Galbraith (3-5; 3.35 ERA) will close out the series in Sunday’s finale.

The Blazers enter the se-ries with the second-lowest earned run average in the league with a 3.10 ERA and will send a trio of right-handers to the mound this weekend, including two start-ers that saw action against Tech last season. James Naile (5-2; 1.71 ERA) is set to start for UAB Friday, while Alex Luna (3-2; 3.15 ERA) and Johnny Lieske (2-3; 4.18 ERA) will pitch in the following two games for the Blazers. Both

ting average.

Luna and Lieske pitched against Tech last season with Luna receiving a no decision and Lieske earning a win after defeating the Bulldogs, 4-2, in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader.

Tonight the Bulldogs look to “White Out” the “Love Shack” as the first 250 fans in attendance will receive a free white Tech Baseball T-shirt upon entry to the stadium.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs will host Faith and Family Day, while also holding an Ice Cream Social where the

first 250 fans will receive free ice cream in a miniature Tech batting helmet. Bulldog fans planning to attend the 2015 Tech spring game at 1 p.m. Saturday will receive a voucher to purchase a $3 dis-counted ticket to the baseball game at 3 p.m. that same day.

To wrap up the weekend, Tech will host its annual Greek Day and Bark in the Park for the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday. All Louisiana Tech Greek members are in-vited to J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park, while Bull-

dog fans are also encouraged to bring their dogs out to the ball park to enjoy Sunday’s game against the Blazers.

Multiple in-game and postgame promotions will be held throughout the week-end, including Baseball Bin-go, a tennis ball toss on the field and Kid’s Day, which is held every Sunday for home games.

An inflatable bounce house will also be available in front of the stadium Satur-day and Sunday for younger Bulldog fans to enjoy.

An impressive two-way performance from Jacob Brown led Cedar Creek to a 6-3 win Tues-day over St. Mary’s, as Brown came up huge both at the dish and on the mound.

The Cougars were led by a flawless day at the dish by Brown, who went 2-2 against St. Mary’s’ pitching. He singled in the third inning and doubled in the sixth inning.

Brown baffled St. Mary’s, striking out 10 batters. He allowed three earned runs, three hits and six walks over seven innings.

The teams traded runs for most of the contest, leading to three

lead changes in the game.

Cedar Creek final-ly managed to grab the lead after a strong fourth inning. The Cou-gars went up for good on a two-run single by Cole Frasier, plating Jace Moss and Aaron Clark.

The Cougars jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Cedar Creek got things going when Wes Gresham singled. Then moved Gresham from first to second. Jacob Mitcham singled, plat-ing Gresham.

Cedar Creek in-creased its lead with two runs in the sixth. Huff McIntosh started the inning with a single, scoring Gresham.

The Cougars are now 17-3 on the season.

Following the game,

players will be available for autographs on the field (on the West concourse in the event of rain).

“I encourage everyone to come out to the Spring Game on Saturday at 1 o’clock,” said Tech coach Skip Holtz.

“It is a great atmosphere as far as the team, the attitude, getting a great scrimmage and getting an opportunity to see the 2015 Bulldogs. Let’s just hope the weather will give us an opportunity to put the ball on the tee and get the game started.”

Season comes to end for Tennis Techsters

Sramkova and the Lady Techsters dropped a 4-0 match to North Texas in first round of Conference USA Tournament.

Leader Sports Service

HOUSTON — Louisi-ana Tech had its spring season come to an end on Thursday afternoon in a 4-0 loss to North Texas in the first round of the C-USA Tournament at Chancellors Racquet and Fitness Center.

Tech (7-11) was struck a tough blow before the racquets were even taken out of the bags thanks to Mother Nature who brought in heavy rain and thunder-storms to the Houston area forcing the match indoors.

The 11-seeded Lady Tech-sters, a primarily outdoors team, was faced with the daunting task of playing the No. 6 seed North Texas (9-13) who took advantage of the fast courts and its power tennis down low in the lineup.

“We fought as hard today as we have at any part of the season this spring,” said Tech coach Chad Camper. “This team faced adversity after adversity all year and always rose to the occasion, including today. Playing

indoor was just an extreme disadvantage. The team went out there and did their best and I am very proud of the effort they gave and have given all season.

“C-USA is an extremely competitive league and we need to grow into it quicker. I will have to learn how to keep this program success-ful.”

Happy Birthday: Good for-tune will depend on your ability to follow through. Change may entice you, but finishing what you start will make a new beginning that much more exciting. Strive for greater security and hone your negotiating skills to ensure you get the best deal no matter what you are trying to obtain. Avoid excess, embellishment and mak-ing unrealistic promises. Your numbers are 2, 14, 22, 28, 32, 36, 44.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Organize your day, and leave little room to worry or become anxious. Set time aside to do something fun and you will gain satisfaction. Focus on personal achievements and self-evaluation. Don’t react negatively when staying calm will bring positive results. êêê

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Take action and make changes at home that will enable you to cut corners and ease stress. Make a point to do as much of the work yourself as possible to avoid go-ing over budget. Use your energy wisely. êêê

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): People from your past will sur-face. Engage in talks that will help clear up any misunderstandings. Make alterations to the way you help others, and you will elimi-nate interference. Love is on the rise and discussing your feelings will bring about positive personal changes. êêêê

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Keep your emotions in check or you will end up making an impul-sive and costly move. Concentrate on projects that allow you to use your imagination, and immerse yourself in situations that al-low you to learn about different cultures. êê

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Be a leader, not a follower. Try to let your actions speak for them-selves. You’ll face opposition if you are stubborn or try to force your way of doing things on others. Do your own thing and advance. êêêêê

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Count your assets and make changes that will help you save. A residential move or a long-term

investment will pay off. Voice your opinions and discuss your plans with someone you look up to. Information will be a powerful asset. êêê

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Refuse to let someone who plays a prominent role in your life up-set you. Do your best to take care of your responsibilities before someone complains. Don’t let a relationship become imbalanced. Fight for equality and keep mov-ing forward. êêê

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You can make positive chang-es to your income. Check out job opportunities or find new ways to utilize your skills or the services you can offer. Love is in the stars, and planning a special evening will lead to romance.êêêê

CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: America Ferrera, 31; Melissa Joan Hart, 39; Conan O’Brien, 52; Jane Leeves, 54.

Fight for equality and keep mov-ing forward. êêê

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You will accomplish what you set out to do if you stay focused. Make plans to spend time with someone whom you find engaging and inspirational. You have much to gain from positive interaction. êêê

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Work on what’s possible to ac-complish, not on what isn’t. Focus on home, family and keeping the peace. Initiating change is likely to backfire, causing an emotional setback. Protect against physical injuries or illness. You’ll accom-plish the most at home. êê

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You can make positive chang-es to your income. Check out job opportunities or find new ways to utilize your skills or the services you can offer. Love is in the stars, and planning a special evening will lead to romance.êêêê
